As GM Authority has covered ad nauseam, a pedestrian was unintentionally trapped and dragged underneath a Cruise AV unit after being struck by a human-driven vehicle back in October 2023. Since this incident, the autonomous driving subsidiary has suffered from pushback after pushback, going so far as to suspend all robotaxi rides, issue a recall for its collision detection system, and fire a number of executives. With all that in mind, it now appears as though Cruise has reached a settlement with the aforementioned pedestrian.
According to a report from Fortune, the settlement between the two entities landed somewhere in the $8 to $12 million ballpark. Notably, it’s unclear when exactly this agreement was reached.
That being said, the current condition of the affected pedestrian remains unknown. However, a representative from the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital – the facility the individual was taken to in critical condition immediately following the accident – stated that the pedestrian has since been discharged.
It’s worth noting that the representative declined to share any further information, while the San Francisco Police Department continues its investigate.
“The hearts of all Cruise employees continue to be with the pedestrian, and we hope for her continued recovery,” a Cruise spokesperson said in a statement.
As a reminder, Cruise just recently relaunched its robotaxi operations in Phoenix, Arizona. Moving forward, the supervised autonomous rides are currently expected to begin in Phoenix and then gradually expand to the Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler areas after safety benchmarks are reached.
This is quite the notable development given that the self-driving company was initially expected to relaunch its autonomous driving endeavors in Texas after reports of representatives from the company talking with Texas officials to ensure a safe return to public streets. However, this no longer appears to be the case.
