General Motors has issued Safety Recall number N242479760 for certain units of the 2025 Chevy Equinox EV, which potentially fail to conform to minimum sound requirements for hybrids and EVs in the U.S. and Canada.
“General Motors is voluntarily recalling a specific population of 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EVs for certain pedestrian alert sound levels that may not be in compliance with federal motor vehicle standards,” a GM spokesperson told GM Authority. “We’re working to resolve this matter as quickly as possible through software calibration updates.”
The problem: The affected Chevy Equinox EV units may have an incorrect software calibration and may not produce exterior sound at the required relative volume when the vehicle is traveling between 20 km/h (12.4 mph) and 30 km/h (18.6 mph).
The hazards: Chevy Equinox EV models that don’t meet the required sound threshold may present a safety hazard to pedestrians who may not hear the car in low-speed driving situations, such as parking lots.
The fix: GM service personnel at EV-certified dealers are instructed to update the software calibration in the vehicles’ body control module (BCM) to correct the condition. Some unsold vehicles may receive this update via wireless over-the-air (OTA) technology.
Affected components: The body control module in affected units needs to be recalibrated but not replaced.
Affected vehicles:
- 2025 Chevy Equinox EV
Number of affected vehicles: 7,606 units are affected by this recall in the United States. GM told us that “in the U.S., nearly 70% of affected vehicles are in dealer possession or in transit to them.” There are 5,192 units affected by the recall in Canada as well.
Owners should: wait for the arrival of GM recall notification letters. Those with additional questions can contact Chevrolet customer service using the toll-free telephone line listed below, referring as necessary to the GM recall number to identify the specific safety recall:

The need of pedestrian warning sounds depends on each State vehicle laws. Where I live, it is not required so I will turn it off if I buy my first GM EV. Most pedestrians don’t listen for vehicles, except the sightless.
“may not be in compliance with federal motor vehicle standards”
you can’t just turn it off.
it’s a safety feature mandated by the federal goverment.
So you want to kill a blind person, like Tesla did until the tone generator was mandatory…
Won’t be a problem rounding them up to complete the recall….they are sitting on dealers lots because no one wants to buy these overpriced EV’s
10,000 sold in Q3 alone. I get that a lot of people on this site have some personal vendetta against EVs but the reality is people are buying them. If YOU don’t like EVs don’t buy one.
Oh yes, please tell us again how a chorus of GM loyalists voicing their opinion is somehow a “problem”.
Get the LT model, with the rebates, it’s pretty reasonable
Just pipe out the lovely little warble of an 80’s 60-degree GM V6.
While your at it let me choose the sound affect myself!
I laughed when I saw this recall, I was looking for a way to turn it down, sounds like a spaceship at low speeds.
It’s louder than gas cars now. They going to make it even louder.
I go walking every day and encounter EVs of all stripes. The Blazers and Bright Drop vans that I see everywhere emit a noise that sounds like the wheel bearings are finished. The Equinoxs are silent; now I know why.
Until the tone generator was mandated, Tesla apparently killed a few blind people…
