Last week, a 2021 Chevy Camaro ZL1 was stolen right from the owner’s driveway in the city of Hillsboro, Oregon. Thieves took less than a minute to break into the vehicle and drive away with the high-end performance car. Video of the incident documents the theft, demonstrating the ease with which the Camaro was taken.
According to a report from local Fox affiliate KPTV, the event occurred the morning of May 13th, 2024. The vehicle owner, Shawn Richardson, shared video captured by his doorbell camera showing the swift theft.
In the video, four suspects are seen breaking into the high-performance vehicle, starting it, and driving away in under 60 seconds. The theft happened while Richardson was at work, and his neighbors, who were awakened by the car’s alarm, quickly notified him of the situation.
Richardson, who described the Camaro as his ‘dream car,’ was convinced that the thieves knew exactly what they were getting.
“These guys that stole it are 100 percent car people,” Richardson told KPTV. “It’s not your everyday Camaro.”
The target vehicle was a 2021 Chevy Camaro ZL1, equipped with the 1LE Extreme Track Performance Package.
Now, Richardson is warning others to take further measures to protect their vehicle. “I live in a nice neighborhood. I was ignorant and never thought it would be stolen right out of my driveway.” His recommendation includes the installation of tracking and security devices, and to ensure that vehicles are kept in a garage whenever possible.
Despite the masks worn by the thieves, Richardson is hopeful that the footage might lead to tips or information that could help recover his car or bring the perpetrators to justice.

If we as a society keep letting “criminals” off with a slap on the wrist, this is the life our children, and their children will live in. I was taught and raised that it’s down right immoral to take other peoples’ things!!! Plain and simple. And if I ever stole, man, I ABSOLUTELY FEARED what MY FATHER WOULD DO TO ME!!!
People are just disgusting right now in society…no accountability
Make your own hidden KILL SWITCH TO THE STARTER,plain old school security!
Tap into the fuel pump, no fuel pressure no start. Starters can be jumped.
It’s ridiculous that a car with Onstar and all that technology was stolen in under a minute and then can’t be found. What’s the point of all the complication if it’s not even going to slow the bad guys down? I say bring back physical keys and save me the worthless $200 RKE fobs and their constantly dead batteries.
The point of the “all the complication” and technology is to spy on and control YOU, not people trying to take your stuff.
How did they steal it so easily?
I’ve got OnStar LoJack and a very carefully hidden kill switch on my Camaro
Me too and mine is a 2015 still got physical key I was going to install remote programmer n get a cool lcd key but nah that upgrade gonna be left out kill switch is a must tho
High tech scanners make it way too easy to get keyless cars. Kinda funny how you 👍 any comments on this sight anymore
Some neighbors, didnt even turn on lights or flash lights.
That reporter mumbled his way through that report .
And the stereo type is reinforced! Punishment should be DEATH !!!
The owner suggests tracking devices which are built into the 2021 Camaro as delivered from the factory if the OnStar subscription is kept current. Best security features are built into modern cars if the owner does not defeat them.
OnStar will track the vehicle and police can shut it down wherever it may be.
My understand is that OnStar is disabled as soon as the thieves get into the car. I started using a faraday pouch for my key fob. Hopefully it will make it harder for thieves to catch a signal.
Apparently there is a more secure level of blue tooth for the fobs. Unfortunately, GM has chosen not to use the updated version, like Range Rover and Jaguar among others have. It’s hard for me to imagine that the cost would be prohibitive. Wouldn’t have helped with the 2021, but it would be worth starting now.
The Faraday pouch, an OBD port block and a dark cover over the V.I.N. are cheap and easy to incorporate. It won’t make the vehicle theft proof, but guaranty they’ll need more time than a minute. A secure garage attached to the house is the best option.
GM might want to think about retro fitting a device or some software change to make their performance products harder to steal. Afterall, 80 -150K for certain Camaros, Cadillacs (Black Wings) and Vettes is a lot of capital. And let’s not forget the high end pickups and SUVs, too.
f I was home the next day youd see body chalk outlines outside my house.
The usual suspects.
I bet it was an automatic too if was stick you’d still have it why because punk thieves can’t drive them. It’s called a man’s mission for a reason..yes you can get a zl11le with a slush box
I would have shot all of them dead and they would have deserved it. Trash.
I had my 2015 Chevy SS stolen out of my driveway on the morning of May 6th, 2024. I have a active OnStar account and was only notified of my car alarm going off at 3am via email. The car was later involved in a accident with a school bus and another car. I had no idea my car was stolen until the police showed up at my door thinking I had fleed the accident scene. After speaking with the folks at Onstar they will only track a vehicle if it was reported as stolen. Since my was was not reported as stolen the thieves had a 4 hour joy ride before wrecking my car and totaling it. Since OnStar has been useless I will go with installing a IGLA system, steering wheel lock, airtag and Faraday box on my next new Chevy SS.
Sean that sucks. Your car is rare to begin with. What happened after the accident claim wise. Yikes hitting a bus. Good luck
Tony
Why was such a rare car not parked in the garage?
because the garage is full of junk like bicycles and golf clubs.
After seeing the video/photos Pat, the “puzzle” is quickly solved.
A clutch pedal in a vehicle will prevent most car thefts nowadays. A ZL1 with 1LE pkg should come mandatory with a manual, like the Viper and C5 ZO6.
Funny in the year 2024 we can put a man on the moon, cure diseases, but can’t stop it cure this scum ridden plague of car thefts. Put these dogs down when caught
Onstar tracked and shutdown my vehicle on demand through coordination with police and agent. All suspects caught/arrested. Police also found 4 other cars from neighborhood. Got plenty of thank you apple pies, cookies, etc the next day.
The owner said he surely didn’t want anyone hurt over stealing his property…is the problem. That’s why they aren’t scared. A semi auto 12 gauge that splatters him in his tracks and the others will think about that next time.
The local Chevy dealer just got a load of Corvettes in today at noon. They surrounded them with all the New Silverados and Tahoe’s. Usually the delivery is Friday. I hope they have a well rested employee stationed with a cell phone and alot of coffee to keep an eye on wheels and doors and hoods and everything inside them.
I have a 2018 zl1 and you can’t get near it without access of the key and I also have a 2020 Chevy 2500hd high country and a 2024 Chevy 2500hd high country and on the app I can locate any of my vehicles in minutes and unless they had the keys they couldn’t just take the zl1 there is a lot more to this than what they are leading out to be!! Chevy vehicles are not that easy to steel and why didn’t the neighbors contact the police right away but my car has never set outside the whole time I have owned it!!
They steal these cars so easily by using scanners capable of picking up the signal from the key fob…you need to keep your keys (specifically the fob) in a faraday box which (for those who dont know) blocks the signal between the fob and car so the thief’s scanner can’t pick it up. This along with a good kill switch will help deter these low life scumbags and help keep your car put.
Would love to store my Cadillac CT5V fob in a faraday box, and did for a while. Sadly the key fobs battery wore down within a week. Even after replacing the battery, it too wore down again. It also happened to my second set of keys, same car. GM and dealer have NO answer as to why this is happening. Great design huh???
On Star is useless when they rip the module out and throw it out the window as they drive off.
