GM has recalled additional units of the 2014 Chevy Cruze which may be equipped with defective roof rail airbag inflators. Affected units may be equipped with airbags that could rupture and send sharp metal fragments into or out of the vehicle, increasing the risk of an injury. GM previously issued a recall for this issue last October, but has since expanded the recall.
The problem: some 2014 Chevy Cruze units may be equipped with defective roof rail airbag inflators. These defective airbags may rupture at a defective weld joint. Some reports indicate that a rupture may not necessarily only occur during a crash, but could in fact occur randomly.
The hazards: if a defective roof rail airbag inflator does rupture, it could result in sharp metal fragments flying into or out of the vehicle. If this occurs, it could increase the risk of injury or death for occupants.
The fix: dealers are instructed to replace the left- and / or right-side roof rail airbags as needed, free of charge. Additionally, dealers are instructed to stop delivery of 2014 Chevy Cruze vehicles in available inventory.
Affected components: roof rail airbag inflator module.
Affected vehicles: this recall affects certain units of the 2014 Chevy Cruze, as well as certain units of the 2014 Buick Verano.
Number of affected vehicles: it’s estimated that this recall affects a total of 20,712 vehicles in the United States, including 17,831 units of the 2014 Chevy Cruze and 2,861 units of the 2014 Buick Verano. This recall is an expansion to GM recall N232408490, which previously affected an estimated 8,150 units of the Chevy Cruze and 1,114 units of the Buick Verano.
Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and advise that an appointment be made with a local dealer. Once parts are sourced, the repair will be applied to affected units free of charge.
