GM Expands 2014 Buick Verano Roof Rail Airbag Inflator Recall

GM is recalling additional units of the 2014 Buick Verano for an issue regarding defective roof rail airbag inflators. Affected Buick Verano units may be equipped with airbags that could rupture, which could send sharp metal fragments into or out of the vehicle. GM previously issued a recall for this defect in October, but the recall has since been expanded to include additional units.
The problem: some units of the 2014 Buick Verano may be equipped with defective roof rail airbag inflators, which could rupture at a defective weld joint. Some reports indicate that the rupture could occur at random, and will not necessarily only occur in a crash.
The hazards: if an airbag inflator does rupture, it could send metal fragments into or out of the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or death.
The fix: dealers are instructed to replace the left and / or right-side roof rail airbags as needed, free of charge. Dealers are also instructed to stop delivery of any 2014 Verano units.
Affected components: roof rail airbag inflator.
Affected vehicles: this recall affects certain units of the 2014 Buick Verano.
Number of affected vehicles: it’s estimated that this recall affects a total of 20,712 vehicles in the United States, including 2,861 units of the 2014 Buick Verano and 17,831 units of the 2014 Chevy Cruze. This recall is an expansion to GM recall N232408490, which previously affected an estimated 1,114 units of the Verano.
Owners should: GM will notify owners of this expanded recall and advise that they make an appointment with their local dealer. Once the right parts are sourced, the dealer will then repair affected units of the Buick Verano free of charge. Jonathan
I have a 2015 Buick Verano and my passenger side airbag keeps coming on but the recall only says 2014 year. Should I have my car checked out because it does it every day someone sits in passenger seat. And I don’t want it to go off and throw those metal particles out and whoever is sitting in the seat.
Hi Benny
Illumination of the airbag light could be related to a number of different issues. I’d recommend that you start by visiting my.gm.com/recalls and type in your VIN to see if there any open recalls or other actions open on your vehicle. You could also try calling Buick customer service (1-800-521-7300). After that, it might be time to talk to a mechanic.
