For the 2024 model year, the Chevy Silverado HD lineup received a host of changes and features, including a revised front fascia, an overhauled interior, and an updated powertrain. Now, the Bow Tie brand’s heavy-duty pickup truck lineup has been named a contender for the 2024 MotorTrend Truck of the Year award.
Making sure to mention how the 2020 Silverado HD‘s exterior styling was a point of contention upon its release, MotorTrend finds that the revised front fascia has largely resolved this issue. In addition, the arrival of the ZR2 trim level for the HD lineup means that all trucks sold under the Bow Tie brand now feature a dedicated off-road variant.
Some of the bigger points that MotorTrend found to its liking with the Silverado HD include the powerful Duramax turbodiesel engine, the overhauled cabin and associated technologies, and the availability of the aforementioned Silverado HD ZR2 trim.
As one may imagine, it’s not all sunshine and roses in MotorTrend‘s eyes with regard to the refreshed Silverado HD. The publication doesn’t like that some of the lower trim levels don’t feature the refreshed exterior and interior, that some towing and tech features aren’t accounted for, and that the standard gasoline engine doesn’t feature a power bump like the Duramax.
As a reminder, the revised 2024 Chevy Silverado HD is equipped as standard with the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, across the entire trim lineup. The optional 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine, which has been uprated for the mid-cycle refresh to 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, is also available.
Both engines are mated to the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission.
In regard to structure, the Chevy Silverado HD rides on a more-capable variant of the GM T1 platform, which it shares with its corporate platform-mate, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD. Production officially commenced in March 2023 at the GM Flint plant in Michigan, and few weeks later the GM Oshawa plant in Canada.
