2024 Chevy Silverado HD Production Under Way

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD got its big reveal last September, with General Motors unwrapping a full model refresh that includes a new exterior, an overhauled cabin, new tech bits, a new trim level, and a powertrain upgrade. Now, GM Authority has learned that production of the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD started last week.

The fully refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD.

For those readers who may be unaware, the Chevy Silverado HD is produced at the GM Flint plant in Michigan, where regular production of the 2024 model has begun, and the GM Oshawa plant in Canada, where regular 2024MY production will start later this month. The new-for-2024 Silverado HD ZR2 will join the lineup later in the model year.

With regard to the refresh updates, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD debuts a new front fascia highlighted by revised headlamps and a new grille design, the former of which incorporates C-shaped LED lighting bits similar to the refreshed Chevy Silverado 1500. The exterior paint list also includes six new hues, and there are new wheel and tire options as well, while all models are now equipped as standard with tow hooks.

As for the cabin space, LT trim levels and above are equipped with an overhauled interior design. The infotainment spec is highlighted by a 13.4-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch diagonal configurable driver information center.

Diving under the hood, the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD is equipped as standard with the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which is once again rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. However, refreshed models direct output through the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission, rather than the GM six-speed automatic equipped prior.

Customers can also opt for the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Druamax engine, which is now rated at 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, as compared to the 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque produced by diesel-powered Silverado HD models prior to the latest 2024 model-year refresh. Diesel-powered Silverado HD models once again run the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission.

Finally, under the skin, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD rides on a more-capable variant of the GM T1 platform.

  1. When will the configurator go live?

    1. 2024 GMC HD configurator is up and running now, not sure why Silverado isn’t.

  2. So am I to assume that the 2023 model is no longer being built, or are these still rolling out from another factory?

Can’t wait to hear the good/bad about the L8T with the 10-speed.

  3. I just want to know when can I order a new 2024 Silverado 3500HD

    1. You should be able to order a 2024 today, by going to your local Chevy Dealer. The dealer ordering system is up and running as far as I know (call them first for verification). I ordered a 2024 GMC HD about a week and a half ago.

      1. My local dealer is able to build and price but not order until an allocation drops.

    2. Most people ordered in January. I did and the sales manager told me last week that my truck was at a 3400 and should be a 3800 this week.

    3. Yes you can, I ordered mine and I have a build date of 3/20/2023

      1. Can you tell me what you ordered? Color/trim level etc? Just trying to get a better idea of what builds are being accepted at this point (I might be willing to change my choices a bit to get it built faster…my order has not been accepted yet). Thanks.

      2. Did you order any of the Special Editions? Z71 Sport, Midnight?

        Reply
        1. No special packages that you mentioned, but I did order the Technology Package and the Fifth Wheel Hitch Package. The truck is a Denali 3500 4×4 Crew Cab, Long Bed.

          1. I was surprised after receiving my 2022 Silverado with the 5Th Wheel trailering package, I was told my older hitch head wouldn’t fit the truck. Evidently, GM changed its mounting system beneath the bed back in 2016. I thought I could just drop the old hitch that I’ve used for years in my F350 down into the mounting holes of my new Silverado, but that can’t happen. The newer style hitch costs between $1,100-2,000, depending on what you buy and where you buy it. I guess they did it to clean up the bed, as I didn’t have to install the rails that held old style hitch in place, but damn…. I buy a $72,000 High Country that is supposed to have everything on it, and I still have to spend more money just to tow my camper. I wasn’t prepared for that.

  4. will GM ever explain the ”more capable variant” of the T1 platform? some of there customers are fairly technical truck buyers. i ordered a 2024 gmc LT8 SLE doublecab in mid january, waiting for the new downpour blue paint finish to be available. for a future flint build.

  5. I read last week that both GM and Ford have temporarily discontinued building pickups due to an abundance of inventory and a lack of employees to build them.

I only wish they’d finish the 2022’s they’ve sold. I’m still waiting on chips that I paid for. It’s coming up on a year now.

That 6.6L rngine is strong, but the gas mileage sucks. I’m getting 11.9 mpg on my 2500, with no towing.

    1. The Flint plant is running 3 shifts and O.T. no shutdowns there. Ft Wayne is shutting down for 2 weeks but they build 1500’s and dealer stock is over 60 days now.

      Reply
      1. That’s hard to believe because I still see very 1500’s on the lots in downstate Indiana except for the 4 bangers no one wants.

        1. Plenty of 1500’s here in Michigan.

  6. Does anyone know what company or companies supplies GM with side steps and why they are rocker panel mounted? I have found only one after-market vendor that offers a frame-mounted set of side steps/nerf bars for the ’23/’24 2500HD. They will get my order for steps, not the factory/dealer.

  7. Priced out a 2024 exactly identical to my 2022 HD AT4. $11,000 more for exact same truck. Insane! Still waiting on heated steering g wheel retrofit for my 2022 with no recall in sight. GM is hurting my feelings.

    1. The only info I got from my dealer was that GM will notify you directly when the chips come in.

  8. I have had a 2500 LTZ on order since July 2022 , had to reorder a ’24 since they stopped building 23’s, and still on constraint for color , I need to order a second 24 for a work truck, but might have to start looking at Ford. I hate to, I have been loyal to my Chevrolet dealer since 1986. They evidently don’t want to build sold orders.

    1. Do you know if the long bed on the 24′ is still on constraint?

      1. yes it is who knows when or if they will become available..

  9. I ordered a long bed 3500 High Country and it is supposed to be at 3800 this week. So I wouldn’t say they are on constraint.

    1. Great, thanks so much for that info!! What does 3800 mean, in production or something like that?

      1. It was scheduled to be built this week is what the sales manager told me. I ordered back in January and it was accepted right away. I originally wanted Blue but that color doesn’t come out until later this year. GM said if I ordered black, white or I believe grey I could get accepted right away. So I chose black.

        Reply
        1. Congrats on that! I remember my sales guy talking about the white & black being available right away as well. I might have to shift over to one of the available colors, because I would really like to take delivery of the truck by mid-summer.

          Reply
          1. Same here, I wanted the truck before summer. I sold my motorhome last summer and bought a fifth wheel and my 2500HD gasser works to pull the trailer, so I upgraded to a 3500HD diesel. Plus the auto slider I bought takes up too much bed space so I went back to a long bed so I could use a regular fifth-wheel hitch.

            Reply
            1. Your reasoning is exactly why we decided to get the long bed! I know if I bought the gasser, I would always regret not getting the diesel, so we went with the diesel as well. We are planning on pulling a 37′ fifth wheel (will be trading in our 29′ TT after we get the truck).

            2. The standard 6’9″ box can be used with a stationary hitch. I tow our Grand design 337RLS with a Curt 16k and a standard pin box. Lots of miles without an issue.
GM moved the pucks rearward after 2019 to gain some clearance and essentially make the need for a slider obsolete.

              Reply
              1. I appreciate that feedback! We have kind of settled on a GD 311BHS, so the front cap would be the same as your Reflection. I imagine you should be able to get somewhere around an 80-degree turn, or a little more with your setup (especially if the hitch point is offset back a couple of inches from directly over the axle). Good points for us to consider, thanks again for the info!

                1. It was frustrating trying to find info on the hitch. Of course the hitch companies will all tell you to buy a slider (for an extra $800) that you dont actually need for the 2020 and up trucks. I ended up with a Curt A16. Works just the way it should.

                  Reply
                  1. Yeah, the Curt seems to be a bit cheaper than the Reese, and they both seem to be able to do the job.

      2. Bryan just the code for it being scheduled to be built. I checked Monday with GM and the advisor said it is scheduled to be. built this week but she said that is subject to change also. So I will check with either the sales manager or GM next Monday to see if it was built.

        1. Where can I find out about restrictions. I am ordering a Chevy 3500 standard box LTZ but keep hearing order won’t go as the wheels are restricted. Feel possible run around from dealership. You speak about talking with GM directly.

          Reply
          1. I am sure your dealership is not giving you the runaround. They are in the business of making money so they want to make every sale possible. You can log into the chevy site and initiate a chat and ask for an advisor if you have an order already in. Otherwise you probably just have to trust your dealership.

  10. Any news on the 2500hd Duramax High Country Midnight Edition ? Ordered mine on Feb 28 and no word from the dealer.

    Reply
    1. I ordered a 2023 back in July and was informed in February that I got pushed into a 2024. Original order was a Blue Z71 sport edition crew cab with Duramax. I went to reconfigure it in February since it was a new model year and things may have changed. I was told that I would still keep “my place in line”. I was also told that if I wanted to see the truck sooner than later I should switch to red, white or black. I decided on a black Midnight edition LT crew cab regular box duramax. I called my salesman for a 9 month update and was told that they are not building special editions yet and that there is no word yet when they will start. I am happy that I am not in serious need of it like some of the people since I have a 2020 Duramax but the whole process is a joke in my opinion. GM needs to work on keeping their dealerships informed as well as their customers. Best advice is to order one at least a year before you want a new one.

  11. Feb 28th? That’s only like-5 weeks ago. It took me 3 month’s to get mine. Then again, mine is a 6.6L gas High Country.

Patience is a virtue. It will come, and you will be happy for a long time.

  12. I ordered my 2024 HD around the same date, GM apparently still hadn’t accepted the order as of about two weeks ago, so I found another one that had already been built that was very similar and put my deposit down on that one (I don’t feel like waiting months and months and months). I should get mine within a month, or so the dealer tells me.

  13. Just talked to Chevy sales team, the new Midnight Edition on the 2500 High Country build date started on March 31. So looks like my truck should be here mid to end of June, Just have to wait and see. My dealer had a few 2024 hd LT and LTZ trims come in this week all 6.6 gas.
