For much of the 2023 calendar year, Chevy inventory levels across the United States have hovered around the 60 days supply mark, which is considered optimal across the automotive industry. Now, dealer inventory of the Bow Tie brand has risen in November 2023 to match the industry average.
According to a report from Cox Automotive, Chevy inventory levels stood at 71 days of supply as of November 2023. This means that at the current sales pace, there is currently enough inventory on dealership lots to last for 71 days. In comparison to the rest of General Motors’ U.S.-market brands, Chevy was ranked roughly mid-pack as Cadillac, GMC, Buick stood at 61, 71, and 106 days of supply, respectively.
It’s worth noting that these figures are related to the U.S. market.
This is a peculiar development considering the widespread impact the 2023 UAW strike had across the automotive industry, particularly on the Big Three. Despite the strike lasting almost two months and affecting several GM plants across the United States that produce Chevy products – including the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee, and the GM Arlington plant in Texas to name a few – Chevy dealerships currently have no problem filling customer orders for vehicles due to the excess inventory.
With all that in mind, General Motors is taking steps to reign in the surplus stockpile across all its U.S. market brands. As GM Authority has been extensively covering, after the holiday break, The General has scheduled an extra week of downtime at the Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and the Oshawa plant in Ontario where the Chevy Silverado is built, as well as downtime at the Factory Zero plant in Michigan where the Chevy Silverado EV is manufactured, for maintenance. While the intention may not be entirely focused on reducing supply, decreased production output will have an indirect consequence to help lower supply figures in the coming future.

I wonder about Buick inventory levels being affected by where the vehicle is manufactured, Encore GX and Envista are South Korea, Envision is China, only Enclave is assembled in the US. With those assembled in Asia inventory for the past 2 years has been very limited and with time to ship from the Asia perhaps the General is beefing up inventory of these models as they may actually sell more just by having vehicles available.
Their average days sales are based on limited to no inventory , so with more product the average sales number that is being compared to as a base may not be accurate , now that dealers have product to sell.
So if the company is making fewer units, but the dealer inventory is getting larger, that doesn’t sound like good sales news to me. No corresponding sales information was provided that I saw.
