2023 Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon Batteries Drained After Software Update

General Motors unveiled the all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado and all-new 2023 GMC Canyon last year, pulling the sheets on a long list of updates, changes, and upgrades for the two midsize pickups. Critically, many 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon owners have complained on social media recently about an issue that causes the batteries in their pickups to lose charge. Now, GM Authority has investigated the issue – this is what we found.

The front end of the 2023 Chevy Colorado.

Apparently, this new issue affecting the battery in the 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon has only appeared in the past few days, including this past weekend. The root cause of the issue is believed to be a failed software update that leaves the infotainment system hanging, thus draining the battery until it’s dead. Both pickups are equipped with over-the-air software update capabilities.

GM Authority reached out to Chevrolet for an explanation. A GM spokesperson said that General Motors was looking into the issue, but did not provide any further details.

At this point, it’s unclear if this issue affects only some trim levels of the 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon, or all trim levels. It’s also unclear if the vehicle build date is a factor.

One social media user claiming to be a GM tech said that the issue is related to a radio software update failure that leaves the radio locked in recovery mode. This individual suggests going into the system settings, then the update preferences menu, and turning off both the “download updates in the background” and “download updates via Wi-Fi when available” options in order to prevent the radio software update from performing and, if it fails, draining the battery.

The 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon represent the first model years for the latest third-generation of each respective pickup nameplate. Both pickups are also equipped with the GM Global B electronic architecture.

  1. My 23 z71 is totally shot. The dealer replaced my battery and got it to actually start again but my infotainment and dash are completely dead and they said they need to be replaced which could take up to two months to get parts. I’m FURIOUS. I put in a claim with gm customer service (who has been rather pleasant) so it documented but I need some answers and solutions very fast. I don’t want a brand new 50k dollar truck that has already had a serious enough problem for that big of a fix. I’ll gladly take any advice

    1. Start by finding a new dealer that understands software and infotainment screens.

      1. Good luck with that! Dealerships don’t hire engineers. This is the future.

    2. 2 month wait on parts is not unusual these days. See it all the time at our dealership. $100K trucks to $30k SUVs. It’s really bad when a HD dually goes down for months that’s in use commercially. Very hard to replace that kind of capability. Can’t rent one.

      1. I hear you. It’s just hard to accept this large if repair with that wait time for a truck that I’ve had for 3 weeks with 829 miles. Still has the new car smell lol

        2. Honestly doesn’t same like that “large of a repair” if they are simply swapping out the infotainment screens. YouTubers, The Fast Lane Truck, had their cluster go dark in their 2023 Colorado Trail Boss. They disconnected the battery, reconnected the battery, and the cluster came back to life. This happened to them around 2,000 miles.

A large repair would be a failed engine or transmission. Infotainment screen issues are pretty run of the mill these days for most brands.

    3. Getting the infotainment replaced isn’t really a big deal. It has nothing to do with the powertrain. The fit and finish after replacement should be as good as factory. Sucks to be out a truck for two months, but I wouldn’t sweat it. It’s a brand new system GM will be using on all refreshed and new products. Probably a supplier build quality issue. In the end you’ll end up with a better product then you initially had (the replacement infotainment will most likely be from the redundant supplier that didn’t f#ck up the design).

Been in the industry (working in infotainment specifically) for 10 years.

Best of luck with your truck.

        3. You can still buy Silverado’s with the basic info screen. Much smaller and the gauge cluster is all analog. Lot cheaper too. You can buy a basic trail boss 1500 which is still nice for low 50K range. Once you start piling on all the big computer screens the price will be 10K to 20K more.

The 21 Tahoe has been pretty good except for the restraint device service alert. The 23 Canyon, twice the battery has drained due to the software update. It was parked in a parking garage at work. Never had the problem when it was parked in an open space.

    6. I just went through the dead battery ordeal with a 2023 GMC Canyon which I have owned for three weeks. Not sure when the software updates were pushed out, reading several forums I noticed July 18th. I had driven about 5 hours yesterday so that might have bought me a day, however at 3:00 PM today 7/20, the battery was completely dead. I was able to call OnStar and have someone come and jump start it. When it first came up there was a message on the screen “Update failed, see dealer to restore system”. Then everything went dark, all dash and info screen. I let the truck run for 30 minutes, then took the risk to turn it off and restart which it did. This time the dash information came on, as well as, the check engine light. Just sitting still for a few minutes the info screen came on however only displaying date and time. I then disconnected the negative battery terminal waited about a minute then reconnected it. This time truck started, everything came back up, and check engine light was gone. I was then able to go into the info screen settings and turn off the auto update features. For the night I again disconnected the negative battery terminal, so nothing will go to the battery. I need to thank everyone on this forum, as everything I did was mentioned by someone, all I did was maybe string it all together. I hope this helps others easily solve the problem. Fingers crossed all works tomorrow morning. BTW I called my dealer service and they were clueless. I find it hard to believe they are not aware of these issues. Also, I live in Atlanta, big metro area and we have had heat and storm issues today, it took three hours for a tech to arrive after calling OnStar, my first ever call, one hour later than the time indicated by the service representative.

  14. Scary stuff. Makes me reconsider a new GM product. I went through all the hassles of being one of the first when Ford switched to a new infotainment system in 2017 and I REALLY don’t want to go through that again. Seeing that ’21s-’23s are affected, I have to doubt GMs competence in this area.

  15. For heaven’s sake GM better get on this issue quickly and rectify it before things get out of hand.

  16. Relax !!!!

After all, it only took GM 3 years (after analysis by hundreds of their most CRACK engineers) to figure out the ENGINE CONTROL MODULE was hogging all the juice after the engine had stopped…. Solution? How about turning off or putting in standby the ECM when the driver has walked away from the vehicle !

Most Crack, or On Crack, these Geniuses eventually kinda figured it out.

My 2023 Caddy LYRIQ during a ‘mini-camping’ Sunday wouldn’t recharge the 12 volt battery even though the car was ‘ON’.

Solution? I opened and closed the driver’s door a few times, then turned the car on and off a few times – and finally got an ONSTAR email that my ’12 volt car battery was destroyed’. One more open/shut door, and turning the car on and off FINALLY made the ECM decide that:

“HUMMM – battery is at 10 1/2 volts…… Almost dead…. maybe I should start Charging the Battery?”.

With my normally 130 ampere load increasing to 153 – 165 amperes as the battery voltage decreased, the dc/dc converter put out AT LEAST 200 amperes since the inverter load continued at 130 amperes and the battery simultaneously recharged quickly. The glycol cooling came on since the converter was really WORKING.

So now I know what to do when camping….

Of course, cars from the past 90 years just had voltage regulators which charged the battery whenever the battery was a ‘bit low’ – not drastically low as here…. They didn’t have any basically Superfluous LOAD DETECTOR MODULES since monitoring the float voltage was good enough…

When I did some work in the past for the local telephone company, they had room full sized batteries ( made of 3800 ampere-hour lead acid cells), that had a final load monitor, but the battery chargers all worked independently and only monitored the float voltage to determine output current…. So even though the concept is ancient, it is still good enough for huge battery plants. Since it worked in the 1930s just fine, it is and still would work just fine in the 2020s…

I suspect GMs dopey software said that it “… doesn’t detect any accessories on (via the useless load monitor), so why should I charge the battery?…”

Well D U H !!!!! If the battery voltage is only 10 1/2 volts it might be a good idea this week to maybe charge it a little?

    1. The amount of people talking about this – for the Silverado, Canyon, Colorado, Lyriq, and other GM models shows CLEARLY that GM doesn’t have anyone who understands how this stuff works – even though any mechanic from the 1930’s could have solved their problem – or at least directed the – “New Fangled” computer team to not discharge the battery when there is no one near the car.

Supposedly for the ‘EV transition’, GM hired world wide some 50,000 electrical engineers….. I’ve always been bothered by that statement since the really GREAT cars of yesteryear were sometimes designed by two, or maybe three competent people. Ferdinand Porsche designed the VW Beetle from a sketch by Adolph Hitler, and it was the most popular vehicle ever made… Jay Leno drove a 1930’s beetle and said the car was ‘almost’ the same as driving a modern one, but still plenty of room and fun to drive.

Obviously the problem here is a Clueless Management.. No Car Guys around anymore like Bob Lutz, who made sure his ‘baby’ – the 2011 VOLT – was Flawless from the get go…. Only change made a bit later was to reinforce the battery mounting rails even more to make sure they’d have no propulsion battery problems… I’ve had 3 of those later called ‘generation 1’ vehicles (a 2011, a 2012, and an identical power train 2014 Caddy ELR) and I’ve never had to do ANYTHING with the 12 volt battery in those cars..

My Tenant is still driving the 2012 (built in 2011) on both the original 12 volt and original propulsion batteries. I have NEVER HEARD of a car getting 12 years from a 12 volt battery, but my tenant is only ‘thinking’ of replacing it as a precaution for next winter… Way over 100,000 miles on it.

Perfectly illustrative of the BRAIN DRAIN at GM. Incidentally, the 2011 and 2012 had the easiest to operate, and most versatile BOSE sound systems imaginable…. AM/FM/CD/Music Player/USB – whatever you wanted that sourced music – the car would easily play it – , and could record am/fm radio broadcasts should they be ‘interrupted’ by getting a telephone call in the middle of them, as well as including copying up to 200 cd’s worth of music – all perfectly indexed and categorized..

NOTHING exists like it today – even when the ‘infotainment’ works, and the battery ain’t dead.

      1. I’m pretty sure any mechanic from the 1930’s wouldn’t be able to figure out the issue with the OS update. The Volt had electrical issues with the driver’s info screen and backup camera screens going black and needing replaced. They would lose power steering, and transmission issues, among a some of it’s issues. I am a big fan of Lutz, but let’s not pretend the cars he oversaw didn’t have issues also. One last thing, your mind is going be blown when you hear about how many songs a phone can hold and how well it organizes them!

        1. Sorry ZR2. I’ve never heard of any of these troubles that you speak of. I have had 3 old school Generation 1 voltec drivetrains, and other than the horrid Caddy ‘CUE’ system failing under warranty just once, I have had no other trouble. I currently drive a 2019 Generation 2 model Volt with also Zero problems.

My 2021 bolt euv and 2023 LYRIQ have no problems other than my own work arounds for an issue GM is unaware of. I do no OTA updates period so that I have no dead batteries.

I’m sure it frosts all you people who like to disparage EVs that the HUGE group of Silverados, Colorado’s, Corvettes and some others are the ones having the trouble.

          1. One issue I’m reconsidering is to *NOT* do the recall action this Upcoming Wednesday, seeing as it is the first software change for the Bolt Euv since GM has reneged on the deal to change out the big propulsion battery. I was to be the first person in Western NY to have this procedure done, but I am seriously considering cancelling it until many others have done it first, seeing in general the Total Incompetence of GM’s IT Team these past few years.

  30. If the screen is going blank that is not the screen, its the actuall computer. Your screen in your a car are just basically a touch screen like on a computer or monitory that has touch capability. The actual computer is separate from the display. Many dealers saying they have to replace the system are probably just replacing the computer infotainment system under the dash.

There should be away to reset all of these system back to factory settings. The issue is many dealers probably don’t have the personel who can do it. Unless the system is totally fried most systems can be recovered.

Those having issues the best thing to probably do is put it back to factory settings and may fix the issue. Also many have said turn off auto update as this is what is possibly draining the battery, which does make sense if its constantly looking for a update and not going to sleep,

Strange that there were no issues in “Metro Phoenix. They were able to complete the OTA that was stuck at their shop. I had to take the Chevy to California because it is my tow vehicle for my travel trailer.
They could not fix my backup camera that is not working or the erratic message that shows my trailer brakes lose power from my Colorado.
I now have 2300 miles on it but is not “fixed “.
I called Chevy Customer service and the girl who handled the call while she fed her baby knows nothing about the problem. She made me an appointment here in Carlsbad Ca.this morning.
They were great people but never heard anything from Chevy. She checked my codes which showed no error codes. I just wanted a check before crossing the desert. I obviously have no faith in my new truck.
I said goodbye and thanked her Service Mgr who said she has just heard a little something from Chevy.
Who knows if there will be a fix bulletin issued.

  36. Took delivery on Jul 18th (Mar 2nd build date) of Canyon AT4. Coming out of work on evening 19th, dead battery (5.7 v) and got a jump. Check engine light and several others flashing with messages initially. Was able to drive it to dealer with check engine light where they had just taken in 4 more Canyons that day for same issue. As of today know it is the software issue but GM had no ETA for fix. Hoping they have something by Monday. Had the truck 24 hours with 60 miles and it is sitting at dealership.

    2023 Cayon AT4
Purchased June 28, 2023 from dealer stock
    930 miles
Read this thread on Wednesday and turned off the automatic updates as directed.
Left work yesterday July 20 at 4:30 and noticed that the brake pedal did something weird when I started it and got a message to check left traler light. I didn’t have a traler hooked up.
Went to go to work this morning, July 21, and when I went to start, the brake pedal pushed back at me pretty hard and the DIC and the Infotainment screen lit up like a Christmas tree: check left/right trailer lights, Side Collision Detect disabled, Service ABS System, ESC (or ECS) disabled, check engine, etc. Then the entire DIC started flashing.
The truck never turned over and now it is totally dead.
Roadside assistance in on the way here right now to jump and take back to dealer.
I will post more here as I know more

    1. @ Matt

The infotainment lighting up like a Christmas tree is a result of the car having low voltage when it turned over

90% of the truck runs through electric as a safety mechanism / to hold power as a fail safe it auto turns the ABS off

The issue is simple but there isn’t a true remedy unfortunately

The dealership / service department your car is at will know less than us, the isssue is the auto updates. After the truck auto updates it or tried to scan for updates while it’s parked there is a glitch in which the infotainment stays running

Turn auto updates off in ur settings and wait for a real remedy to come from GM

All things considered this is one of the better issues to be having even though it’s annoying as all hell

It happened with the refreshed 22 sierras, the 24 HD’s and the Cadillac lyrics in recent time and all were remedied fine so far ( the Lyriq is still iffy but it’s Cadillacs first EV’s so to be expected )

Had the same issue btw / died overnight ( dead dead ) 3 nights in a row turned updates off and it hasn’t died since but we’ll see

  38. 2023 Canyon. This happened to me. Totally dead battery, would not recognize key, etc. Solution was to remove negative battery terminal, charge battery, reconnect and all good to go. When you attach the battery the alarm will go off. Just hit the alarm button on the key fob to turn the alarm off and you are good to go. The truck thinks there might have been a theft attempt and you have to address when you start the truck.

  39. Following up on my earlier post…
My 2023 Canyon AT4 is at the dealership currently. Here is what I was told:
The software update that is causing all the trouble discussed here… WAS CORRUPT!
They are not sure if it was bad programming in Detroit or if it was an outside hack.
The corrupt file causes the high speed bus (the main power draw on the battery that runs all the big components in the truck) to “stick open,” thus, killing the battery!
They got my battery charged, started the truck, but my screens were dead (which was reported here also).
They ended up disconnecting the battery, reconnected, started up, and screens were back (also reported here).
Apparently this screen thing had an update about 4 weeks ago. The tech tried downloading that update and it ended up LOCKING my screen and they can’t get into it.
I now have a new radio on order which should be delivered by Monday.
Once they get a working screen, they will try to get the rest of the update situation figured out.

Bottom line… GM has NO IDEA what is going on with this situation. It is happening in real time. While I was at the dealer, another Canyon came in with the same problem. Also while I was there, a dealership-wide email was sent out about this issue. The technician had to put in a call to engineering, IN DETROIT!!! for input. The service manager told me before I left with my loaner that I came in with more information than they had about this issue. I got that information from this board and I hope you guys can use some of my experience to assit you too!

    1. Yes, typically an update that doesn’t work the way it’s supposed is corrupt. It wasn’t a hack either.

    2. Hello I was wondering if you got your truck back yet? I have the same situation dealership did what GM told them to do and have now fired a modular the dash is dark and they were told could be months till the part comes in so mad about this situation

      Reply
      1. I got my truck back the following Monday after the dealership had charged, updated, reset/disconnected battery, and ran a check on all modules. Truck has been fine since then (going on 2 weeks now).

The service manager did mention that another canyon with same issue had the screen lost issue and they were currently unable to get it back so likely replacing the unit.

Seems there are varying success at fixing and not sure what the determining factor is.

    3. This shows GM is clueless. ‘Corrupt’ downloads would fail a cyclic redundancy check at a minimum and should never be put into service… They should have discarded it autonomously immediately.

  44. Glad I found this thread, picked up my new 2023 Chevy Colorado July 19, today (July 23) battery was dead as a doornail. Tried recharging with my very old charger, 10 amp limit. The charger kept tripping it’s internal breaker. Jump started it from another car, needed to leave the car running for 15 minutes to get enough charge to start the truck. CEL was illuminated, kept truck running for several minutes. Found this string and turned off automatic updates by wifi and in the background. Turned off truck and restarted 10 minutes later. Started fine and CEL was off. Will call dealer tomorrow to see if they know anything about it. Will also disconnect neg terminal to hopefully reset any gremlins hidden within…

    1. Update – have not disconnected negative terminal, battery was fully charged this morning, truck started with no problems. Have called OnStar who had no clue about the problem, called my dealer where I will get the truck serviced. The tech/service manager I talked to had heard about the OTA updates causing hangups and discharging the battery. I need to send them my VIN but he said there is no service bulletin yet. He did mention that they regularly check the vehicles in inventory for battery level and charge them if necessary. Have read in another forum that the problem is related to the download being performed and hanging, not the actual downloaded software which is why turning off downloads may remedy the problem

Unfortunately for the Colorado, I think you can only shut off the ‘info’ updates but not system updates.

That is obviously a horrid situation to be in.

With my LYRIQ, I think I have it configured to ask permission for ANY update. I of course refuse everything and I am sure I will CANCEL my recall update this upcoming Wednesday for my 2021 bolt euv until everybody else has had it done first, in view of GM’s hopelessly incompetent IT department.

  46. Update direct from my service department at my dealership:
My Canyon went in on Friday for the issue being discussed here.
The current understanding from GM is that some computer in Detroit that sends the software updates WAS constantly “pinging” vehicles and causing the onboard computers in our trucks to “wake up.” Everytime is woke up, the battery drained to dead. Apparently, there was NEVER and software update to be downloaded. This explains the answer to at least two issues presented here:
    1) Turning off the auto updates didn’t do anything because there was no update. The GM computer was just pinging away.
    2) Those of you that have done the “remove negative battery terminal” or have gotten a new charge on your battery only to have it die right away again anyway… it is because the computer at GM keeps pinging you vehicle.

I am due to get my truck back tomorrow and I have been told “that the problem is fixed in Detroit.” We shall see I guess.
Has anyone else heard anything along these lines?

I did have problems with my bluetooth connection so I removed my phone from memory and the only way I could enable to button to add a phone was to disconnect the neg terminal and reconnect it. Everything seems to be acting normally now

  49. Hi Christine. Glad to hear from you. My Trail Boss went dead. I bought it on June 21st. The next day I tuition to a car wash and after they rolled it out of the car wash I had an “Power Steering failure notice. I drove it to the dealer which couldn’t fix it. I needed to take it to a trip from Az to California. The message went away.
The famous week of July 19-26 my battery went dead two days in a row. I went back to my dealership in Phoenix and they didn’t have a clue. The managed to “finish “ the stalled update but of course that update doesn’t include any “fix “. My Back up camera doesn’t work and when I tow my Travel Trailer there are all kinds of errors msg. My integrated brake controller from Chevy fails every 3-5 minutes while towing. I am returning to Ca. Tomorrow and I have an appointment there with a Chevy dealer. I saw them two weeks ago but there was no bad codes so they couldn’t do anything for me. This time I can leave it for a week. Talking to Chevy is a joke. They all claim to know nothing about it. I showed both dealers the GM Athority article and they just scratch their heads.
I wish that GM Authority didn’t stop reporting this lack of progress from Chevy they were all we had.
Bottom Line. I do now have 2800 miles on the truck. No backup camera and no uninterrupted trailer braking. My number is 561-702-1819 if you want to chat. I have no faith in my beautiful truck.

  50. Happened to me this morning on my 2 week old Canyon with 346 miles. If we all force GM to provide at their expense a tow to your dealer (Oaks GMC in Kansas City MO is great) at some point the cost to GM in dollars, customer complaints and lost customers will hopefully force them to correct their problem. Or am I just hoping that they acutely care.

  52. This happened to me too. Yesterday my truck drove great, but today my truck wouldn’t start. The battery was drained. My husband jump started my truck and all kinds of warnings kept popping up. I couldn’t get it in reverse or shift at all. Finally, I did a factory reset and the infotainment reset. A few minutes later I could drive it and recharge the battery. I turned off the updates on wifi and the background updates. The truck seems to work now, except there is a check engine light. Thank you for everyone who posted here. It really helped. It is upsetting to spend $45,000 of my hard earned money to buy reliable transportation and still get stranded. This is my second issue with the computer. The first time we left for a 1,000 mile trip to Yosemite with my new camper, the GPS and Apple Play quit working too. The dealer told me to do a factory reset and a day or two later it worked again. I think there is a problem with the software updates.

  53. I fixed the problem with my new 2023 Chevy Trailboss by applying the tips on this page. My truck wouldn’t start. I jump started it and charged the battery. Then, it wouldn’t go in reverse or drive. I did a factory reset on the computer. I deleted the infotainment system data. Then, I changed the settings to not update over WiFi, and not update in the background. The truck became driveable. I drove it 10-15 minutes to charge battery. The check engine light was still on. The next day I drove it further and the check engine light went off. Thank you everyone for taking the time to leave comments.

  54. My battery drained 3 times. 1st two times, in July, I charged battery, thinking I left something on. But then I saw software issue circulating online. Took to Dealer and they did a draw test and of course found no issues. The 3rd time, in Sept., had it towed to Dealer so they can experience the issue themselves. They’ve reached out to” Engineering” and was told that the transmission module is causing the battery to drain. So they ordered a new one. Waiting on its arrival and see if it’s the cause.

  55. Hi All,
Have a 2023 Canyon (Bought it end of May), hadn’t driven it for about 3 days. Tried to start it and all kinds of warnings kept popping up but didn’t start. Tried a second time then pretty much everything went blank. Nothing on the speedometer screen but a message popped up on the info screen saying. “Update Failed. See dealer to restore system”. Yes it is a dead battery now. I was able to jump start it but still nothing on the speedometer screen and the info screen still saying. “Update Failed. See dealer to restore system”. Let it run for about 20 minutes then shut it off and restarted. Started ok but info screen still has the message. Pulled it back in the garage and set up an appointment at the dealer for next week. The message stayed on the screen all night even though the truck wasn’t running. Of course that will continue to run the battery down. I disconnected the negative battery terminal and put a charger on it. Battery is fully charged now but won’t hook up the negative terminal till I am ready to take it to the dealer. I did talk to a dealer and they said they had just gotten a new service bulletin for this issue about 10 days ago. Said they had a Colorado with this issue they plagued them for a month. They said the new fix seemed to work. Guess I will find out next week. Thanks all for the previous comments.

  56. Sorry but a little behind in posting my update.

Here is some history of what I did before I dropped it off at the dealer. (Note the battery was fully charged without the terminal being connected) Sunday night Oct 1st I re-connected the negative battery terminal to see if it would start. Truck started fine but still blank speed odometer screen and the radio screen still has the “Update Failed” See dealer for restore system”. I did back it out of the garage for a few minutes and put it back in. Was afraid to drive it due to no gages. Shut the truck off and the “Update Failed” See dealer for restore system” was still on the screen.

Disconnected the negative terminal again. Monday evening Oct 2nd I re-connected the negative terminal and started the truck. The dash started to populate with GMC logo then finally the speed odometer screen came up. The “Update Failed” message when away and the radio screen came back to normal. Everything looks normal on the dash other they the service engine light was on.

Dropped it off at the dealer for its Tuesday appointment.

Got the truck back from the dealer this afternoon Tuesday Oct 3. Seems to be ok. Drove it to work today (Wednesday) and ran a few errands; all seems good as of today. Hope it stays that way.
Here is what the paperwork said.

Started TAC Case and was informed by TAC to reprogram 6 modules. Attempted to program modules and scan tool would not communicate with BCM. Contacted techline and found computer being used for scan tool info was not up to specs. Used a different computer and was able to connect to all modules that required programing. Here are the items that they updated: Started TAC Case, BCM programing SPS#, Serial Gateway module SPS#, EBCM SPS#, Camera SPS#, T Case SPS# and Tec SPS#. Each has an SPS number but pretty long numbers to post.
    Hope this info helps others.

  59. Why can’t they turn off the OTA updates? Just turn them off! “Update” the software only when you get your oil changed??? Or require OTA updates to be done manually, not automatically. I turned off the automatic updates but still have dead battery issues. I heard that it still automatically updates on 5G. Even our phones have a way for the user to control when the data is updated. GM needs to consult with Apple or the phone companies to fix this issue.

  61. Odd that OTA’s were to help GM cut down on Service Issues but They Do Not Test These Software Updates to Be Sure there is no Other Ill Effects from Them. Also These OTA’s are to be Specific to differennt Systems like Safety, or Infotainment System among Others. Also You are Never aware of these and some talk is that some are Monthly Updates. That is hard to see If they have a Better Quality Product. THis will Start Costing Chevrolet / GM More Moeny because so many are Having Issues After an OTA! THis Dead Battery is not Limited to the 2023 Model Year as I have a 2022 Colorado and It started back in March 2024. Went to start my Colorado and click click click! At least I could access the Truck and pop the Hood! THought it was just dirty Connections on the Battery so used Steelwool to clean Terminal Leads & Posts. Connected a Charger and got it Started contacted my Dealer and They mentioned possible Software Update was lucky and got in with a few days. They Checked things out did a Battery Load Test seeing if the Battery had a bad Cell or Cells. They Found Zero Wrong but Fully Charged the Battery. Well April 10 2024 after Truck say for 3 maybe 4 days this Time I could Not Accessthe Truck with the Unlock Fob used The key and This Interior Dome Light did not come on either. As Soon as I connected my Ayto Charger the Anti Theft Sounded! Had Disconect the Charger and have the FOB to disable the Anti Theft System. Let It Charge for 4 Hours then did some basic Testing t see if there was any current drain and my Fluke VOM Started at 2.5 amps when I series on the Meter between the Ng Bat Terminal and Neg Bat Lead. It slowly increase to 4.5 amps. When It should not be little to No Draw! Once I connected the Neg Lead I started the truck and again in the IP Display it has a Meassge saying to Lower the Drivers Door Window and then raise It once I did that the Message Went away. Appears GM could have did an OTA which is now Causing The Dead Battery Issue the sad part is thers is Nothing to ALert You that an OTA has been done which should be a part of the Sequence of Events so the Vehicle Owner is aware something was Change But I have Yet to KNow when such an Update Happens. But AT times when I get into my last 2 GM Trucks I would have on the Radio Display asking what Language “English” and required you to Acknowledge It. That suggests an Update has Been DONE! But now I am waiting to see If This Can be Corrected as I did not have an Battery Issues before and left my Truck sit for a week at atime on occassion. But Now If It sits 3maybe 4 days The Dead Battery Issues Happens!!! I can Appreciate if there Is a Safety / Control Issue they needed to update but my Infortainment System has had No Issues so why wouldThey Need to Change the Software??? They Should Alert With a Message in the IP Display so You can Know they Did Something. Now I can’t Chance Driving anywhere as I culd have Issues with a DEAD Battery. Sad that They Think is Good Tech when It Cuases Many with Major Issues To Have to DEAL With! My Dealer did not know anything about this issue but sounds Like an OTA gone Wrong. Also Some mention you can Turn Off These Updates but not sure How. Also If you are Using the GM App some mention there is somethimg in that App that might show these Updates. I also read that on the Vehicles Displays should Show when an Update was Done I have yet To See That just If your Language is English or Another. Look like GM took Liberties as to Doing OTA’s and Then Have Unexpect Problems as mention Here!!! SAD

This time they said don’t store your key fob within 10 feet of your truck. (Like by the front door or near the garage if it’s stored there.). And they disconnected Sirius to see if Sirius is the problem.
