GM Teases Fully Electric Chevy Blazer SS: Video

General Motors has released the first teaser clip of its upcoming Chevy Blazer SS – a powerful battery-electric vehicle that will put other performance EV crossovers like the Ford Mustang Mach-E directly in its crosshairs.

“Chevrolet provided a glimpse of the all-electric Chevrolet Blazer SS, which will be the first Chevy EV to feature a performance SS model” the automaker’s brief, two-sentence press release said. “The all-electric Blazer SS will make its debut later this year and will be available in spring 2023.”

The teaser video released Wednesday shows an individual removing a cable from the charging outlet of a red-colored crossover equipped with large machine-faced, SS-branded alloy wheels. The charge port appears to be located on the driver’s side of the vehicle just behind the left front tire and features a deployable/retractable charge door.

The upcoming Chevy Blazer SS marks the return of the iconic ‘Super Sport’ or ‘SS’ nameplate to Chevy’s crossover/SUV portfolio. The last time the SS badge was applied to a crossover was in 2009, which was the final model year for the 6.0L LS2 V8-powered Chevy Trailblazer SS.

Like all GM electric vehicles to be released in the near future, the Chevy Blazer SS will utilize the automaker’s BEV3 platform, along with Ultium battery technology and Ultium Drive electric motors. It’s hard to say how much power will be on tap, but we imagine Chevy will be benchmarking the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition, which produces 480 horsepower and 634 pound-feet of torque from its dual-motor powertrain. A 91 kWh battery gives the Mach-E GT Performance Edition an estimated driving range of around 259 miles, or 418 kilometers. We should also remind readers that we recently spotted GM benchmarking the Mustang Mach-E near its test center in Michigan, as well.

Check out the teaser video embedded below.

    1. Kind of off topic here but it’s kinda funny how Biden, the guy pushing all of these EVs on people, is driving around in a huge Caddy Duramax diesel limo that gets 9 mpg.

Never heard Trump push them on anyone so if he rides around in a good old ICE how can I hold that form of non existent hypocrisy against him. Sorry Dan but you don’t really have an argument.

        1. Which reminds me, whatever happened to that RWD GMC Jimmy we were supposed to get in the 2022 model year?? Many of us have been WAITING for a truck-based RWD mid-size SUV from GM ever since the (REAL) TrailBlazer ended in 2009. (Yeah, I know… IF GM were ever to sell a Colorado platform-based mid-sized RWD SUV in the USA it would RUIN the sales of the darn FWD CUV’s (Blazer, Traverse) they have been pushing on us for GM’s benefit, not ours!)
At least if this Blazer SS EV is RWD, we’ll have that. But, at the end of the day, it will still be an EV, with all of the limitations that come with that.

        2. GM has determined you do not want a 2 door performance sedan for less than 75k.

          1. Right; it seems that only Stellantis is giving performance-oriented folks what they actually WANT, like the Dodge Challenger, Charger, and Durango. What do they all have in common? RWD (AWD optional) and a range of engines to choose from. At acceptable prices, judging by their sales numbers. Seems most of Dodge’s customers have come from GM, when GM completely abandoned that market.

  3. I hope this thing can beat the Mach-E on range, even considering it’s a “performance” edition that will trade efficiency for 0-60 speed.

  4. Cool to see that there will be a performance SS version. This looks to be a swoopy design which is fine but I would prefer a more angular design for the Blazer. But I bet it will look cool.
The interior is what matters now.

  5. here’s the thing. ford may have arguably “ruined” the mustang name by launching an electric SUV bearing its name, but at the very least it’s got the performance and driving characteristics that are worthy of that name, and i’m not too bothered by it for that reason. GM revived the blazer as a boring two row midsize SUV. okay, yeah a huge disappointment. THEN they decide to double down on their stupidity and add an electric powertrain AND the SS badge. all i know is that it better be worthy of that badge or it’s gonna get a lot of hate, and rightfully so.

Hate giving Ford credit but they cannot make enough of the Mach – E vehicles to keep up with the demand.

  7. Looks like the Blazer will be back being RWD which GM wanted all along.

    1. Almost ALL BEV’s should be RWD based.
I am sure GM will mess up and have the upcoming Nox be FWD and no Frunks. (Anything smaller than the Nox segment I would be ok with FWD based)
It is crazy that almost all Legacy Automakers do not offer Frunks…..Ford does with the Mach- E though.

  8. The Blazer will probably be similar to the Lyriq when it comes to length, motors available, etc. so it should be rear wheel drive in its basic form and awd in the SS here.

    Reply
    1. It will be. This was all but confirmed months ago.

If you like the Lyriq but can’t justify the price or simply don’t like the overall design, the new Blazer EV will be effectively the same car underneath, RWD with available AWD.

      A great move.

  9. The real deal here is to get this so it has performance but also range.

The Mustang Mach E is not even hitting 300 miles. Get the range and a good 0-60 you will get a vehicle people will be interested if it is priced around the same as the ICE.

You can’t just live on 3 second 0-60 times and 287 mile range.

This is the real world and people need a vehicle that is not a life style changer.

As for Frunks. In smaller models you are not always going to have that option as space in a SUV is very limited if you have seating. I is not like a truck with a bed. It is not like they are missing that much cargo space to start with in most CUV models.

It would be interesting to see if they make a FWD and RWD option. That way everyone could buy the drive wheels the want. Also add a AWD option to this too.

    1. 3 Second 0-60 times= high insurance rates.

  10. Is it supposed to be RWD? Hope GM brings also an affordable Chevy EV capable-SUV to the market, just like the ICE Bronco. Ultium provides some benefits after all.

    Reply
    1. It will be RWD. No word on a more attainable EV off-roader, but if we get one it will probably wear the Hummer name as a smaller model compared to the current Hummer EV (Al Oppenheiser said this was a strong possibility), and a Chevy version could come later.

But seriously, I’m excited for this. Been wanting GMC to make a modern Typhoon or Syclone for years. This may be the closest to it.

  12. Based on that fender charge port it’s probably a rebadged Lyriq, which should be a good thing.

  13. Has anyone else noticed the C8 like boomerang shape around the charging port? With the concave area close to the door I suspect it’s supposed to be reminiscent of the air intakes on the back of the Corvette. Looks nice from this admittedly tight shot.
