The arrival of the 2020 Buick Encore GX creates a new “tweener” entry for the Buick crossover model cadence, slotting in between the “regular” Buick Encore and Buick Envision as a “subcompact plus” model. That basically means the Encore GX is larger than the regular Encore with regard to physical size. However, at the same time, the Encore GX is also lighter than the non-GX Encore, as we’ll outline in the following GM Authority Weight Comparison.
Previously, we highlighted the weight difference between the 2020 Buick Encore GX and regular Buick Encore with a focus on the lightest configuration for both models, yielding a considerable 212-pound savings for the GX.
Notably, this is the greatest weight difference between the two models. However, lining up the other comparable trims yields further insights into the weight savings offered by the 2020 Buick Encore GX, as detailed in the following table:
Trim Level | Engine | Transmission | Driveline | 2020 Encore GX Weight | 2020 Encore Weight | Driveline | Transmission | Engine | + / – Encore GX |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Base | N/A | N/A | N/A | N/A | 3273 | FWD | 6-speed auto | 1.4L Turbo LUV I-4 | - |
Preferred | 1.2L Turbo LIH I-3 | CVT | FWD | 3025 | 3237 | FWD | 6-speed auto | 1.4L Turbo LUV I-4 | -212 |
Preferred | 1.3L Turbo L3T I-3 | 9-speed auto | AWD | 3256 | 3358 | AWD | 6-speed auto | 1.4L Turbo LUV I-4 | -102 |
Select | 1.2L Turbo LIH I-3 | CVT | FWD | 3039 | N/A | N/A | N/A | N/A | - |
Select | 1.3L Turbo L3T I-3 | 9-speed auto | AWD | 3258 | N/A | N/A | N/A | N/A | - |
Essence | 1.2L Turbo LIH I-3 | CVT | FWD | 3094 | 3237 | FWD | 6-speed auto | 1.4L Turbo LUV I-4 | -143 |
Essence | 1.3L Turbo L3T I-3 | 9-speed auto | AWD | 3273 | 3358 | AWD | 6-speed auto | 1.4L Turbo LUV I-4 | -85 |
As detailed in this table, we find that the weight difference between the 2020 Buick Encore GX and regular Buick Encore can vary significantly, maxing out at 212 pounds for the Preferred trim level, and 85 pounds for the Essence trim.
The engine and drivetrain configuration also changes the weight difference between these two models, with the 2020 Buick Encore GX offering both the standard turbocharged 1.2L I-3 LIH, and the turbocharged 1.3L I-3 L3T, the former of which connects to a CVT, and the latter of which connects to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Both FWD and AWD are offered as well.
Obviously, the larger engine, nine-speed transmission, and AWD make the 2020 Buick Encore GX heavier when compared to the same vehicle with the smaller engine, CVT, and FWD. Nevertheless, the GX still bests comparable trims of the regular Buick Encore across the board.
While weight differences of 85 to 212 pounds might not seem like a lot on paper, they actually make a big difference on the real world, especially in the subcompact segment.
