GM Files To Trademark ‘Tracker’ In The Philippines

General Motors has filed to trademark “Tracker” in the Philippines, GM Authority has discovered.

Filed on February 14th, 2020, the application is assigned serial number 42020002422 and was performed via a paper filing. No other details are available about the trademark application.

The GM Authority Take

It would appear that GM’s purpose in filing this trademark application is to bring the all-new Chevrolet Tracker to the Philippine market. Currently, the Detroit-based automaker markets the Chevrolet Trax crossover and the Trailblazer SUV in the market. However, it’s higlhy likely that the Trax will be replaced by the all-new Chevrolet Tracker in the not-too-distant future.

The Chevrolet Tracker was introduced for the 2020 model year in China, splitting Chevy’s subcompact crossover SUV offerings into two – the aforementioned Tracker (on the GEM platform) as well as the slightly larger Trailblazer (on the VSS-F platform). The fact that the Tracker is based on the GEM platform means that it was designed specifically for emerging markets.

Other models that ride on the same platform are the second-gen Chevrolet Onix and second-gen Buick Encore (the non-GX model). Other models are expected to follow suit, including a small unibody pickup truck to replace the Chevrolet Montana as well as an entry-level people mover to replace the current Chevrolet Spin MPV.

If, and/or when, the Tracker does come to the Philippine market, it will likely be imported from China, which is the only Asian country where the vehicle is manufactured, as of this writing (the other country where the new Tracker is made is Brazil, at the GM São Caetano do Sul plant). In fact, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if GM decided to not only offer the Tracker, but also the new Trailblazer and even the Equinox in the Philippines.

Those hoping to see the new Chevrolet Tracker in the U.S. should not hold their breath: the vehicle will not make its way Stateside (though it might become available in Mexico). Instead, U.S. and Canadian customers are getting the upcoming, all-new 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer alongside the first-gen Trax.
