Pristine 1998 Chevy Tracker Convertible Up For Auction In Texas

The original Chevy Tracker (née Geo Tracker) has an unlikely cult fanbase among off-road enthusiasts. While one could write it off as a cheap and forgettable little SUV from the 90s, the 4WD models are actually pretty capable pint-size off-roaders and have a robust aftermarket scene. Many of these are either modified or rotting away in junkyards, but an all-original survivor with only 13k miles on it is up for auction on Bring a Trailer.

Despite its 3-speed automatic transmission, this Tracker is in a desirable spec. It’s a two-door convertible with 4-wheel drive, which is the configuration you want if you’ll actually take this SUV off-road. Features include a 2-speed transfer case, black soft top, front disc brakes, 15-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, and a CD player.

Power comes from a 1.6L I4 G16B engine with SOHC, electronic fuel injection, and four valves per cylinder. It was good for 95 horsepower and 98 pound-feet of torque. That’s not a lot of juice, but the curb weight of this Chevy Tracker is only about 2,600 pounds, so the little Suzuki engine gets the job done.

The attached Carfax vehicle history report shows a gap from 1999 to 2006, but it shows that it’s a one-owner car that’s been registered in Michigan since new. The most recent mileage entry shows 12,500 miles in May 2018. It also shows an accident in January 2011 with “very minor damage” reported to the front right of the vehicle. Judging by the photo gallery, it appears it was professionally repaired to its original condition.

This Tracker is located in Mansfield, Texas, with no reserve. The high bid, as of this writing, is already at $13,000. That’s a lot for an old Tracker. The auction ends on Monday, December 9th, so get your bids in soon if you want a rare chance to own a clean, low-mile Chevy Tracker.

  2. Cool. But they had a high “rollover rate”.

    1. Yes, they did. I have a long-time friend who fixed that. He put a small block Chevy in it and lowered it. Sure is a hit at car shows.

  3. Had a ’96 blue 5spd version of this vehicle. Absolutely loved it! It was like a little tractor, especially in snow.
I fixed the roll over potential with 1″ wheel spacers along with 1″ wider aftermarket wheels. Much stabler.
Broke my heart to see it go, but like most Canadian built Suzuki manufactured vehicles of that time frame, Tracker, Vitara and Metros, rust got to it before the powertrain died….

  4. This is a great vehicle for towing behind RV’s, with a 2600lb weight and with the transfer case being shifted to neutral for flat towing or dolly towing. (I haven’t ever owned an RV, but I used to se these towed everywhere)
