The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Low Cab Forward sales during the third quarter roughly doubled those of the first quarter of 2019 and were 53 units higher than the 1,305 units delivered during the second quarter.

The Chevrolet Low Cab Forward (LCF) medium-duty trucks are the result of a partnership between GM and Isuzu Motors announced in June 2015. The trucks were developed and are built by Isuzu, with GM providing a few components, notably the gasoline engine.

The LCF is offered as a 3500, 4500, 5500, or 6500 model, and is available with the GM 6.0-liter L96 Vortec engine or one of two Isuzu diesel engines: a 3.0-liter four-cylinder or a 5.2-liter four-cylinder. Chevrolet LCF 3500, 4500, and 5500 models are a rebadged Isuzu N-Series, while the 6500XD is an Isuzu F-Series.

The trucks are part of Chevy’s strategy to deliver a “whole solution” for commercial fleet customers, ranging from light-duty midsize pickups (Colorado) and full-size light-duty pickups (Silverado 1500) to full-size heavy-duty pickups (Silverado HD) and medium-duty chassis cabs (Silverado MD). The “whole solution” approach is vital as it keeps fleet customers within the Chevrolet network, rather than wandering over to a competitor. In addition, the Low Cab Forward models provide incremental sales volume and revenue for GM, without significant investment or effort.

  1. The Chevy Medium dealer network is getting larger and there is more product. A friend of mine just picked up a 4500 Crew Cab gas. Starting to see the 6500/FTR’s on the road too.

    1. Chevrolet is are doing well in the segment, but they need to expand into Class 7 conventional trucks. They are in a partnership with Navistar for that truck too, but that may be evaporating as VW has gotten more involved with Navistar.

      1. VW is spinning their truck unit off, it is now known as Traton. Traton has stated that they are continuing with their partnership with Navistar, but are not interested in acquiring any more of Navistar byond what they currently own.

  2. Your info is wrong. The LCF is not offered as a 6500 model. The first picture you have is the much bigger medium duty truck and the cab is much higher than the 4500 or 5500 models. The F-series is a high cab model known as the 6500XD model. You sit at least 18 inches higher in the 6500XD. They are two completely different trucks. Too bad that they stopped offering the big Isuzu inline 6 cylinder 7.2 liter diesel in the 6500XD. In fact, they used to offer the big block Chev 7.4 liter engine and later the 8.1 liter big block, in the same basic medium duty truck years ago.

    1. You’re wrong, mark.

The Chevrolet Low Cab Forward is available as:
      – 3500 gasoline
      – 4500 gasoline
      – 4500 HD/XD diesel
      – 5500 HD/XD diesel
      – 6500 XD diesel

All models are sold together under the Low Cab Forward moniker and reported on that line.

The 6500 was announced in 2017 as an addition to the LCF line, though its basis is a different, larger truck (N-Series vs. F-Series):

      1. YES! I love it when these clowns try to say that the authority is “wrong” only to have Alex come in and smack them back to reality with facts.

  3. I think the sales figures are for all the LCF’s, 3500-5500’s and the 6500XD’s.

Yeah, GM sold a few gas T-6500 LCF’s with the TBI 366 Big Block in 1997 and 1998. In 1999, both the TBI 366 and 427 were replaced with a heavy duty version of the ‘Vortec’ 7.4L, which had port injection. The 1999 sales literature for the ‘T’ series trucks listed the Vortec 7.4L as an option, but my understanding was none were actually produced. Something about the air cleaner assembly? Not sure. Never saw any T-6500’s with the 8.1L, and it does not appear as an option in any sales literature or parts catalogs for those trucks 2001-2009.

Who knows, we might see the Isuzu 6HK-1 7.8L again.

  4. For a while, the 6500XD was the only class 6 truck that GM sold.

Now the conventional cab Silverado 6500HD is on the market. Supposedly a dock height model with a full 26,000 lb GVWR is in the works for next year.

I think Chevrolet should bring the medium duty truck designs in-house eventually. They can make a conventional and a cab over on the same chassis like they did with the Kodiak and the Isuzu T-Series.
