A new GM recall has been issued in the United States for 177,276 units of the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu equipped with the 1.5L LFV turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
The defect: an error with the engine control module (ECM) software may result in the fuel injectors being disabled.
The hazards: disabled fuel injectors would prevent the engine from starting, or may cause engine stalling while the car is running, increasing the risk of a crash.
Affected vehicles: 2018 Chevrolet Malibu.
Number of vehicles affected:Â 177,276 located in the United States. Currently, no recall of this nature exists for the Malibu models powered by the turbo-charged 1.5L LFV engine sold in other parts of North America.
The fix: as part of the GM recall, dealers will reprogram the vehicle’s engine control module free of charge.
Owners should: vehicle owners should note any issues with their vehicle having difficulty starting, and contact their local dealership as soon as possible to prevent any engine stalling issues.

The 2015 model also does that
The 2013 model does that too but they won’t recall that year.
I have a 2016 Chevy Malibu, I done had it for like 2 months now. Just at the end of last month I went out of town for the first time. I was on the highway in traffic an my car loss power an a message came on the dashboard stating engine loss power an the check engine light came I had to get in a safe place an again on the way back home. So Friday the car did it again on my way to work on the freeway it was scary. So what should I do 3 time within a month time
My husband’s 2016 does the same thing, had his car at 3 Chevy dealers and they still wont do anything about it…GM also knows about the situation…and they wont recall it…it also has powering steering caution coming on,loss of power and stabilitrak comes on it is a nightmare and on more than one occasion has almost killed us due to the fact we have trouble stopping when applying the brakes….
Mrs. Caudill, I will bet you anything you want that if you take off the brake vac pump and you find 3 or 4 small pieces broke off the pump and are in the engine. you will have to fish em out with a magnet.. my 2018 did the same thing. my car hasnt functioned properly since the ecm recall was serviced. goes into ‘limp mode’ multiple times a day. the dealership charged me $430 to replace the battery. that didnt fix it. now they and gm said for $1200 they can replace a high pressure fuel pump. 3 different ase certified techs say the pump is perfect and that the problem is ‘exhaust camshaft timing over-advanced bank 1’.. caused by a faulty ecm!!!
I experienced the same issue with the 2014 Chevy Malibu
Maybe we should lawyer up on GMC because my experience was scary as hell I was near death. I have appointment for my car to be looked on the 25th of this month at their earliest. It just a matter of time before the unthinkable happen. I took pictures I have documents an witness so if anything happen to me or my family while in that vehicle they will be liable ?
There is currently a class action suit for 16s, 17s, and 18s. Google it.
For my graduation gift from Highschool in 2013, my parents bought me a old 2008 chevy cobalt. The only issue was the tire montior stayed on and engine light would come every once awhile. It wasn’t till this recent year before summer started, I had a engine power reduced pop up on dashboard. Guess what I got rid of that trash and Got me a Toyota Corolla now !!! Never going back to chevy !!! And I was thinking about getting the malibu too !! Glad I changed my mind !!
My 2018 had the same problems with steering and brakes. They replaced the Brake Control Module AFTER having it OVER two months!!!! I finally called GM and took it to a different Dealer!!!
Why are they only recalling the 2018’s when it’s blatantly obvious this is affecting other model years? How is the 14-19 Impala such a good car with a minimum of problems yet the Malibu’s in most years from 2004 to present seem to be plagued with loads of problems with the electric power steering, suspension, electrical and control modules. How can two cars on similar Epsilon platforms be so different in reliability?
Our 2018 malibu with 3000 miles shut down on me today. The check engine light came on and I ended up having the car towed to the dealership. The tow truck driver said he had already taken 2 2018 Malibu’s in for the same reason. The dealership called and said the car was fine now with no engine light on when it came off the tow truck. I told them to keep it over night and check the computer system and let them know the issues I have been reading about fuel injector.
I have a 2017 Malibu my car has been down for 2 months due to the ECM however when I called GM they only recall 2018 model they told me they could see what they can do !!! That was totally un acceptable for a car that’s less than 5 yrs old
I have a 2018 malibu and they are death traps! The vacuum pump went causing my car to become hard to stop while driving down the highway. After paying right at 400 dollars to have that fixed I had the ECM recall serviced. Since I’ve gotten it back it has lost compleat power while driving 6 times. 4 times I was on the interstate doing around 80mph and suddenly dropped me to 25mph almost causing serious accidents. Took it back to the dealer who told me it was due to my battery being bad. They charged me $430 to replace a BATTERY!!! 10 minutes after leaving the dealer the same problem yet again! They swear to me the car is perfectly fine and safe!! They’ve had my car for 2 weeks now and say its the high pressure pump that is bad and it has absolutely nothing to do with any services they done to my car!!
P.s ooohhhh and dont hold your breath for GM to admit to any fault and take responsibility for the garbage they’re selling.. They will side with the dealer and make you pay out of pocket ..
