The GM Authority Take

Earlier this year, Navistar began contract assembly of cutaway versions of GM’s full-size vans — the Chevy Express and GMC Savana — at its plant in Ohio, while the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri continues to produce the Express, as it did before. The arrangement results in increased availability and supply of the Express as well as its twin — the GMC Savana, thereby enabling higher sales volumes of the tried-and-true van lineup.

In June, the Express took second place in the full-size van segment by sales volume, behind the Ford Transit but ahead of the Ford E-Series, GMC Savana, Ram ProMaster, and Nissan NV. Of particular concern is that GM is being outsold in the full-size van competitive set by Ford, as combined deliveries of full-size Ford vans (the Transit and E-Series) were 15,777, while sales of full-size GM vans (the Express and Savana) were 9,787. The circumstance shows a clear opportunity for General Motors to introduce a new and modernized van line to rival the likes of the Transit and Ram ProMaster, while continuing to offer the legacy Express and Savana vans.
