Suspected Shelby GT500 Spied, May Outgun Camaro ZL1’s Powertrain

Chevrolet certainly can’t expect Ford to sit idly by while it romps around with the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE and Camaro ZL1. New spy photos may show the upcoming Shelby GT500 cloaked as can be, according to Ford Authority.

The prototype is most definitely a Mustang, but it’s difficult to make out any real details on the car. Ford has gone through the trouble of even scrubbing the most of the marking on the tires’ sidewall. Spy photographers did manage to read the front tire’s size, which measured 305/30R20. That’s relevant because the Shelby GT350 wears 19-inch wheels at the front and rear.

So, about the power. To strike back at the Camaro ZL1’s 650 horsepower, it’s rumored the next GT500 will push over 700 hp either from a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 or a supercharged 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 engine. Who knows if it will touch the Dodge Challenger Demon’s 840 hp rating, though. Ford seems more keen on taking on the Camaro than Dodge’s near one-trick pony muscle car.

We’ll have to wait and see how Ford returns fire after the Camaro ZL1’s stupendous reveal.

  1. Big numbers are for marketing what matters is how much power gets to the ground.

    1. Something the last GT-500 was incapable of doing.

  2. Zl1 owners will need to take off that tiny 1.7 to compete with the upcoming competition. Good thng the ZL1 is the cheapest option because adding a reliable bigger SC or going turbo will cost 10g give or take.

All because GM didnt want camaro taking the corvette’s lunch. The least they could do is offer 675/700+ warrantied stage packs.

    1. It will take a lot more than 60hp to do the trick.

  4. Well if it follows in the footsteps of the 350R should be fun. I for one love good competition if the next Mustang outshines the Camaro for a year or two so be it, you know the next Camaro will only be getting better, and so on. I’m more of a Ford fan, but I really like that the Camaro can now stand on it’s own, not in the Corvette’s shadow. I will never be a fan of the Corvette but I have long been a fan of the Camaro.
