1,200 HP 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Battles 1,300 HP 2012 Chevrolet Camaro SS

As much as we love the gen-one Camaro, there’s no doubt a new Z/28 would destroy the finest the old guard had to offer. Even a “stock” 1969 COPO Camaro ZL1 would get seared like a steak.

With nearly 50-years between them it’s not really a fair fight, admittedly.

But, the key word here is “stock.” And in the eyes of racers, next to nothing goes untouched. With that said, could a tuned ’69 Camaro really stand a chance against a tuned gen-five Camaro in the half-mile? You’re about to find out.

In the left lane we have the camera car, a twin turbo 1969 Camaro that’s been boosted to 1,200 hp. Other than that we don’t know much about it, unfortunately.

Luckily, we know a whole lot its competition in the other lane, a 2012 Camaro SS with 1,300 hp.

With an LSX 434 motor built by QMP racing engines and tuned by Cunningham Motorsports, ZL1 differential, 3.23 rear end gearing, RS Gear Tranzilla six-speed transmission and (we’re guessing) a whole lot more, the fifth-gen car is now capable of dispatching the quarter mile in a scant 9.82 seconds @ 153mph. Even, Dom Toretto would be impressed with that.

Grab a fistful of cash and place your bets– this is an insanely tight race.

A far-too-tall Ontarian who likes to focus on the business end of the auto industry, in part because he's too tall to safely swap cogs in a Corvette Stingray.
