In the automotive world it seems there are awards, and then there are awards. Though automakers are keen to accept most any awards they can, no matter how tenuous or obscure the publication, only a select few offer name brand credibility that both manufacturers and the public truly recognize. Motor Trend’s Golden Calipers, anyone?
The World Car of the Year awards also sit somewhere near the top of the “recognizable and credible” pile of annual awards. The jurors are assembled from a swath of auto journalists from across the globe and each year the jury team is booted out and replaced with a fresh new team of deliberators.
The seventy-five-member jury team recently revealed their top ten finalist for each category: World Car of the Year (WCOTY), World Luxury Car of the Year (WLCOTY), and World Performance Car of the Year (WPCOTY).
Though General Motors did not crack the top 10 World Car of the Year list, it’s surely pleased about its other nominations: Cadillac received a double nomination in the WLCOTY category with the 2015 Cadillac Escalade and 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe, while the 2015 Corvette Z06 supercar received a nod in the WPCOTY category.
The top three finalists in each category will be revealed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and the final gongs will be announced and dished out at the New York International Auto Show in April. Until then, place your bets…
