Meet The Executive Chief Engineer For The New 2014 Chevy Silverado And GMC Sierra

Jeff Luke has been with General Motors for nearly 30 years, and has been almost exclusive to the truck group. And for the next-generation, 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, he’s overseeing the entire project.

In the latest “Faces of GM” video, Luke outlines a bit of his history with the company, and a few of the features customers will find in the new line of trucks. Of which, he mentions that we can expect increased fuel economy and horsepower from the new EcoTec3 engines, along with increased overall refinement and new active safety technologies. There’s also a quick demonstration on how the rear-view camera works, and how to properly use the corner-step bumper.

  1. I really do love the work gm put into these trucks. Didnt know what to make of them at first but i love the evolutionary exterior design and the revolutionary interior. I also love how gm didnt follow fords ecoboost path and reinvented the small block w a suite of modern technologies.

  2. Absolutely love these trucks, especially the design. The haters need to STFU.

    1. I’m BIG hater of these trucks. See if you can make me STFU.

  4. Maybe GM should have had a Texan design these trucks instead of a Canadian. At least they would beat the competition as opposed to just meeting them. There is absolutely nothing that is class leading in these trucks. As a GM truck buyer since 1985, thess trucks are the ones that will make me buy a Ford next year. The last classic Silverado produced were the 1988-1998 Silverados. These trucks are a HUGE let down.

    1. Oh yeah, we have no idea what trucks are supposed to be capable of in Canada. Sigh. We use them for all the same things as a Texan would, and arguably have even more torturous weather/terrain in which to drive them. What a terrible comment. And I’m not sure how you can make “class-leading” comments when none of the details have been released. The only thing you can make judgements on is the styling, because you don’t know anything else!

    2. Maybe a Canadian design is just what these trucks needed. What makes Texas so tough? We got a 160 degree F. temp. spread here. Canada is VAST dude. Most people farming here don’t live anywhere near a dealership. We have to leave the bush to go camping. Repairs gotta be cheap and simple… Easy to do on a Chevy. Reliability, Efficiency, Simplicity. IN THAT ORDER!

  5. We’ve been hearing of “evolutionary trucks” for quite awhile. When the heck does the revolutionary version arrive?

  7. have been repairing trucks for over 35 years, the only bad thing about ford, is there engine, if they had a LS style engine they would be unbeatable. I think the new gm will be king for now. and lets not talk about the suspension problems on the rapter, try and put a few hunded pounds in the box and see what happens, this thing is a toy.

  8. Dear Richard… Just name the time and place and I will physically make you do just that. Don’t like it? Then don’t ask others to “make you”.

Now, would you remind me again why you are a “big hater”? Have you ever owned a truck in your life? Do you have a use for one? Do you even know what truck buyers value? Or are you just breaking wind?

  9. Glen i dont see how gm messed this one up. The 2014 sierra/silverado is marked improvement in every category. Exterior/interior styling is subjective but im a fan because it stays true to the design language and interior has better matierials and fit/ finish (which btw i dont understand why ppl are saying its not different enough do ppl expect a camaro its a pickup truck!). The powertrain is a huge improvement more power better fuel economy especially once the eight speeds start rolling out. AND GM managed to shed some weight from the previous generation which has been there achilles heal ( but i suspect this will change moving forward w lessons learned by the brilliant alpha platform).

  10. But even to assume that the nationality of a professional (yes, professional) engineer is somehow relevant to the outcome of a multi-billion-dollar project is purely ludicrous. A Texan could as well have completely messed up the project… That is to say that the nationality is entirely irrelevant. What matters is research, know-how, creativity, and enthusiasm. Everything else is big bollocks.

  11. Anybody w/ two first names (Jeff Luke) is just a double negative! lol…at least get rid of the dumb corner steps it makes the rear bumper look incomplete and lacking definition. The truck isn’t all bad it’s good but, those dopie corner steps are useless I tell you!!! whats the difference if I was stepping on the middle part of the bumper??? vs on the corners??? also, less metal means cutting corner’s in this case literally! Certain parts of the interior are funky but at least their trying for something different, can’t complaln I asked for it lol… If they would fix the bumper I would be interested otherwise its a deal breaker…

    1. I like the bumper steps. Have you never had to jump in the back of a truck with the tailgate down??? That’s why you can’t just use the middle part of the bumper. Those steps are going to come in handy. As much as I hate to admit, I like the tailgate step on the Fords. Though this is simpler and likely just as effective.

  13. Joe have you ever used let alone seen the steps? They’re anything but dumb and incomplete, and are significantly better than Ford’s fold-out solution, which is prone to breaking due to the amount of moving parts that are flimsy.

My suggestion: use it and see it in person first. Then comment on it. Be an educated consumer.

  15. 1.) GMC is supposed to be the Superior product. 2.) Where is the neat aftermarket stuff 3.) Why not offer Two tone paint or some kind if stripe package 4.) The ford is so much better for the ergonomics because the Gear Shiftier is located on the council and not up on the Column, come on my 63 Be-lair had 3 on the column , put gear selector down on the council, its cooler , better safety, easier ergonomically 4.) Gas engines MUST HAVE TWIN PIPES COMING OUT BACK END EACH SIDE !! We need to bring back the LONG Bed option on 1500. I am ordering Aug 1st if I can find a dealer that will have it built the way I want it, I hope by then you have satisfied 1 – 4 request , GMC should be the leader ahead of Chev , Dodge, and Ford., PS – Dodge offers electronic steps that fold way.

  16. I have bought only new GM’s for the past 15 years and although I love my current LTZ I was excited for the 2014 to arrive.. all I can say is what a F&(K’n let down!! Lets start with the looks: the GMC looks like a 2003 Ford, The Chev looks like the Truckster from Family Vacation, the body lines are a combination Ford/Toyota; the two ugliest trucks on the planet! Well congrats GM you just combined them.. and what’s with that stupid looking rear bumper?!?! who ever needs a step 3″ below the actual step likely needs a wheelchair ramp to get in! Next lets look at the interior; although an improvement from the previous generations it really is a copy of a 2005 Ford, as far as creature comforts clearly Luke hasn’t been paying attention; Ford & Dodge blow this away. The console was useless pit before and guess what, now there are two useless pits! I had one salesmen tell me that I could store a hard hat in there!! LOL How about a salesmens head will that fit? So a hard hat is in the console, but my change, and phone charger are laying on the back floor! Now lets look at the head unit, while it linked quickly to my phone, no album covers were displayed and operating the steering wheel controls do not show the adjustment on the head unit! GM still can’t access APP’s! Have these clown engineers not tried out their competitors vehicles??? Dodge, Ford & Toyota all blow this out of the water.. Next lets talk about powertrain, so they are up on HP on the same 5.3 that has been around for years, the only real competition it has is the 5.0 Ford every other standard truck motor eats GM, and the horrible throttle response still hasn’t been fixed. Now lets talk GM’s sales tactics and packages; the LTZ used to mean a full load imitation leather interior with heated/cooled seats, not anymore if you want that option its gonna cost you an addition $1500 over the LTZ $6000 adder!! And GMC’s All Terrain cannot get NAV or Cooled seats?!?!? Their package options is a SUDOKO puzzle, can’t these clowns just list the options with check boxes? or offer 3 trim levels period?! On the plus side at least they didn’t screw up the ride or the ride height. For those that are dyed in the wool GM guys before you comment I suggest you take a competitors truck out and compare.. I realize that things like appearance are purely opinion, but I was really hoping that GM would have been an innovative leader instead of just catching up to 2007.
