2014 Chevrolet Silverado

The 2014 Chevy Silverado is an all-new pickup truck, representing the third generation of the Silverado nameplate. Riding on a new platform (K2XX) and featuring a lineup of all-new engines (EcoTec3), the vehicle has been completely re-designed and re-engineered for improved all-around performance — thereby improving on an already very capable formula.

Vehicle Highlights

  • New from hood to hitch with all-new engines
  • Best V8 fuel economy, best available tow ratings of any light-duty pickup
  • Standard scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles

The 2014 Silverado was engineered to be stronger, smarter, and more capable than ever before — according to GM. The vehicle features a hundreds of improvements, including:

  • A trio of all-new EcoTec3 engines, a V6 and two V8s
  • A stronger, quieter and more comfortable cab
  • A refined new interior with features and connectivity tailored to the needs of truck customers
  • Revised steering, suspension and brakes for improved ride and handling
  • New solutions for managing cargo in the bed

Technology

The 2014 Silverado uses innovative technology tailored specifically for truck users. Examples include:

  • EcoTec3 engines with class-leading V8 fuel efficiency and towing capability without the cost and complexity of turbocharging
  • High-strength steel that makes the frames and cabs stronger and lighter, yet can take the pounding of towing, hauling and off-road operation, year after year
  • The strategic use of aluminum alloys to reduce the weight of engines, front suspension components, hoods and other parts
  • New interiors featuring ample storage, multiple power and USB connections and available high-wear cloth for bench or bucket seats
  • Chevrolet MyLink for powerful connectivity for work or family with simple, intuitive controls

Engineering And Validation

According to General Motors, truck customers are among the most discerning and demanding in the business. Truck buyers know trucks inside out, and many have owned trucks for decades.

The trucks have tough tasks to do and are worked hard, under conditions that would shock many car owners. Owners expect their trucks to accomplish these tasks without complaint, while also expecting them to endure, as the average age of a full-size pickup is now more than 10.4 years.

GM says that its team responsible for designing the new Silverado went to extremes to design a new truck that would exceed the demands of these customers.

For instance, the new full-size trucks (including the 2014 Silverado and 2014 Sierra) underwent over 6 million miles of durability testing in the torture chambers at the Milford Proving Ground, over the deserts and mountains of Nevada, and across the frozen flats of Kapuskasing, Ontario — equivalent to 240 trips around the earth. In addition, the trucks will have accumulated more than 7 million real-world miles during final testing, bringing total test miles to more than 13 million.

The increased power, torque and efficiency of the new EcoTec3 engine family was the result of an unprecedented level of computer analysis, including extensive computational flow dynamics, to optimize the burning of air and fuel in the cylinders. More than 10 million of hours of computational analysis went into the engine program and over 6 million hours — roughly 685 years’ worth — of analysis went into the advanced combustion system alone.

Engineers even went so far as to test the very basics, like the new inlaid doors, which underwent nearly 150 truck lives’ worth of testing.

The 2014 Silverado’s all-new exterior design blends strong Chevy truck heritage with a refined, modern aesthetic. The design of the new truck is more muscular, and more functional while also being more aerodynamic.

In the front, a twin-port grille, full-width bumper and dual power dome hood create a strong presence that’s carried through in sculpted body sides and fender flares.

But the design of the new Silverado is about much more than just looks. The new front end, for instance, is engineered to improve sealing for more efficient cooling, while the roof and tailgate spoiler were shaped in the wind tunnel to smooth airflow over the truck for reduced drag. New inlaid doors, which fit into recesses in the bodyside, reduce wind noise to make for a quieter cabin.

The 2014 Silverado’s all-new interior follow the same principles seen on the exterior, with a focus on form and function. Designers implemented the upright instrument panel, six-gauge instrument cluster and multiple storage options specifically for the needs of truck customers. Controls are functional, logically placed and easy to operate while wearing work gloves. Rear doors on crew cabs are larger, for easier entry and exit, and rear doors on double cab models are now hinged at the front for easier access, especially in tight spots.

Meanwhile, the new truck’s cab is stronger, with nearly two-thirds of the structure made from high-strength steel for a confident feel and improved safety. Likewise, the main rails and key cross members of the updated frame are made of high-strength steel with major elements hydroformed for reduced mass and improved strength.

Supporting the cab on the new chassis are new shear-style body mounts. The mounts tune out both up-and-down and side-to-side movement for a quieter and more comfortable ride. Double cab and crew cab models have a set of hydraulic body mounts to further isolate the cab. Combined with numerous other acoustic and NVH (noise vibration and harshness) enhancements, the intended result is a solid, refined feel with no loss in traditional truck capability.

Infotainment

For the first time, the 2014 Silverado brings the new Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system to the truck, providing easy-to-use connectivity for the job site or the family vacation. The system incorporates natural voice recognition and enough ports and power outlets to support multiple devices.

Most 2014 Silverado models feature MyLink with a 4.2-inch or 8-inch color touch screen radio. The 4.2-inch radio is standard on 2WT and LT models and includes Bluetooth for phone call streaming, two USB ports, an SD card slot and natural voice recognition. LTZ and High Country models receive an 8-inch high-definition touch screen that enables users to scroll or drag through menus.

Both MyLink systems feature intuitive and easy-to-operate controls for major functions. In addition, four selectable themes are available for the display screen and drive information center (DIC) that tailor the look of the displays to the taste of the user.

The 2014 Silverado’s pickup box is made from roll-formed steel for increased strength and reduced mass compared with the stamped beds used by major competitors. The box also has several new smart solutions for cargo management useful for work or everyday life, including CornerStep bumper, tie-down hooks, lighting, and an improved tailgate.

The CornerStep bumper, combined with handholds built into the new box rail protectors, makes it easier to access the box. The bed is also available with new upper tie-down hooks, under-rail light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and an EZ Lift and Lower tailgate.

For the first time, Silverado 1500 crew cabs will be available with a longer 6’6″ box, in addition to the previous 5’8″ box. The new availability allows customers to carry more cargo while still being able to park the 2014 Silverado in many garages.

The chassis of the 2014 Silverado includes a number of updates that result in an improved ride, handling, and safety. A revised front and rear suspension and wider wheels provide a more comfortable ride and more confident handling while electric power steering improves steering feel and reduces fuel consumption. New four-wheel-disc brakes with Duralife rotors improve brake feel and potentially double rotor life.

The 2014 Silverado is available with segment-exclusive safety features such as Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning with an Active Safety Seat, and Front and Rear Park Assist. StabiliTrak with Trailer Sway Control and Hill Start Assist are standard on all Silverados.

The 2014 Chevy Silverado offers three all-new engines, including:

METRIC 4.3L V6 LV3 5.3L V8 L83 6.2L V8 L86
POWER HP / kW 285 / 212 355 / 250 420 / 279
TORQUE LB-FT / Nm 305 / 413 383 / 519 450 / 609

All three engines are part of the new EcoTec3 engine family and feature direct injection, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation), and continuously variable valve timing (VVT).

The engines utilize a compact overhead-valve design and integrate weight-saving components such as aluminum blocks and cylinder heads to reduce mass for additional energy savings.

General Motors unveiled the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado alongside the 2014 GMC Sierra on December 13, 2013 at a special event for the media. The presentation was led by GM North America President Mark Reuss and Executive Chief Engineer for trucks Jeff Luke.

Watch the video of the unveiling here.

Chevrolet will launch the 2014 Silverado during the summer of 2013, with dealers beginning to receive shipments of the new truck in June of 2013.

The first models to reach dealer showrooms are the Silverado crew cabs without the available 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 L83 engine. These vehicles will begin reaching dealers in May and cary a manufacturer’s suggested retail price starting at $32,710, including a $995 destination freight charge.

Later in the summer, the crew cab will be joined by the regular cab model and the new double cab, which replaces the extended cab. In addition, the all-new 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 engine will become available later this summer, while the range-topping 6.2L EcoTec V8 L86 is slated to come in the fall.

Initially, the 2014 Silverado will be available with a drop-in bedliner; a factory spray-in will be offered soon after the truck goes on sale.

To ensure a trouble-free and successful launch of the 2014 Silverado and 2014 Sierra, both of which are highly-important products for General Motors, the automaker elected to delay the market introduction of its all-new SUVs, which share the same K2XX vehicle architecture with the Silverado. These SUVs include:

Chevrolet will offer the 2014 Silverado 1500 in seven distinct trim levels, including:

  1. 1WT
  2. 2WT
  3. 1LT
  4. 2LT
  5. LTZ
  6. Z71
  7. High Country

Silverado Work Trucks

Two works trucks (1WT and 2WT) will be offered, with the 2WT trim level adding features such as chrome bumpers, high-wear cloth seats, and the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with a 4.2-inch color touch screen.

Silverado LT & LTZ

Silverado LT and LTZ trim levels add more features such as an 8-inch color touch MyLink radio and trailering package on the LT, while the LTZ adds a 5.3L EcoTec3 V8, leather seating, and dual-zone climate control.

Silverado Z71

Available as an option on the LT and LTZ, the Z71 package offers several unique features for enhanced off-road capability, including:

  • Monotube Rancho shocks
  • Front tow hooks
  • Transfer case skid plate
  • Unique 18- or 20-inch wheels and all-terrain tires
  • Hill Descent Control (engaged by the driver using a button on the instrument panel, it uses the anti-lock braking system to enable a smooth and controlled descent in rough terrain)
  • Unique interior trim (brushed metal sill plates, a special finish on interior trim pieces, and Z71 graphics on the instrument cluster)
  • GM-exclusive automatic locking rear differential that reacts in milliseconds in low-traction situations to improve safety and confidence on wet, snowy or muddy surfaces

Silverado High Country

The Silverado High Country brings the 2014 Silverado into the premium pickup truck segment, where it becomes the flagship of the Silverado family. The new truck adds unique exterior and interior styling and equipment.

Standard Silverado High Country features include:

  • Unique chrome grille with horizontal chrome bars

Silverado Texas Edition

The 2014 Silverado also offers the Texas Edition package — an optional equipment package rather than an actual trim level. Available only in the State of Texas, the Texas Edition can be added to the LT and LTZ Silverados.

In LT trim, the Texas Edition package adds:

  • 20-inch polished aluminum wheels
  • Trailering package
  • Locking rear differential
  • Body-color outside mirror caps and door handles
  • Texas Edition badges

Equipping the Silverado LTZ with the Texas Edition adds:

  • Chromed 20-inch wheels, door handles, and mirror caps
  • Bose premium audio system

Silverado Custom Sport Package

Outside of Texas, Chevrolet offers the Custom Sport package on the 2014 Silverado. The package is equivalent to the Texas Edition, but without the distinguishing Texas-specific badge-work.

The base price of all three configurations of the 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500, including the regular cab, double cab, and crew cab, carry over from the last-generation 2013 model, which was priced starting at $23,590.

All 2014 Silverado 1500s receive a standard scheduled maintenance program for two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The 2014 Chevy Silverado is produced at two GM factories in Silao, Mexico and Flint, Michigan.

The Heavy Duty (HD) variant of the all-new Silverado is expected to debut sometime in 2014 or 2016 as a 2015/2016 model. The Silverado HDs are expected to be available in 2500 and 3500 variants and use the 6.2 liter EcoTec3 and an updated 6.6L Duramax Diesel engine.

And while GM hasn’t released any details surrounding such models, there are of even more capable pickup trucks on their way from GM to the tune of 4500, 5500, and 6500 Silverados.
