With Possible Jeep-Fighting GMC Coming, C.R. Asks Us If There Will There Be A Hummer H4: Mailbag

This article is part of the GM Authority Mailbag series, where the GM Authority Crew features and replies to your questions, comments, and observations.

The following comes to us from C.R.:

Hummer H4… will there be one?

As unfortunate as it is, Hummer is no more, so the short answer to your question is no.

Here’s the longer, more involved answer.

During GM’s bankruptcy proceedings in 2009, it was decided that Hummer no longer needs to be part of the new GM, and would therefore be sold off or discontinued completely. An attempt by Chinese manufacturer Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company to acquire the brand didn’t pan out, and GM ended up dismantling Hummer.

But even with Hummer’s demise, there still might be hope for a Hummer-like vehicle from GM.

For the last couple of years, it has been rumored that GM’s GMC brand would release an off-road-oriented SUV that would take on the likes of the Jeep Wrangler (over and over again). Coincidentally, that’s the segment in which the Hummer H4 (or the Hummer HX concept) would have competed if it were to be brought to market before Hummer’s demise.

To note, GM has not confirmed the development of such a vehicle, and there have been no spy shots. Even so, enthusiasts remain hopeful — as GMC would be the perfect brand for a Wrangler fighter.

In the meantime, the closest thing GM has to an H4/HX concept in the current product portfolio is the 2015 Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize trucks… but they’re not exactly compact or strictly made for off-road, though an off-road Colorado variant is on the way via the Colorado ZR2.

  1. Maybe this is a dumb question but if GM didn’t sell HUMMER to that chinese company, that means that GM still has the rights to the HUMMER brand,

So, could GM still revive HUMMER if they really wanted to?

  2. Yes, GM could revive Hummer but Wall Street would frown. As emissions regulations get more strict, such a move is high risk.
GM has also been crafty when it comes to global warming PR so Hummer, like Pontiac, present problems.
Last, I don’t feel this way, but many felt that GM had and still has too many brands.
It would be best to sell a few reimagined Hummers as GMC domestically and Chevrolet globally to compete with Jeep.

    1. well that was then.. 2015 now 2018 Trump is in office and pushing back most crazy EPA regs.. if we are lucky he will cut most of them allowing auto makers to make good stuff again… hell look at sales now of full size trucks and suvs through the roof.. and H2s are still reselling very very well… its what people want.. H1 H2 … etc.. to hell with the lib progressives and their tree hugging, man made Global warming B.S.

  3. If they brought something to market, just make it Chevy globally including North American. GMC is a promoted as the professional grade (high end, luxury etc) and Chevy is the every-day man’s vehicles, sporty, off-road type vehicles like the ZR2.

  4. Here is the deal, Hummer is gone and not coming back. The name conjures up images of large SUV like vehicles the media played havoc with as anti environmental.

Now on the other hand as Bob Lutz stated one of the major mistakes he made at GM was making Hummer a Division and not a model at GMC. He said this lost them the flexibility to make fact moving changes with the brand and to develop a more manageable dealer network.

The key here is if you make a future jeep like entry a GMC it will make the model easier to offer and change as well as giving GMC something Chevy does not have to off set them more from Chevy.

It also would help them with the MPG and also offering something smaller than a Colorado.

Also this is an item that could be easily marketed at any dealer in the GM global system. So this could be sold at Holden, Opel and any other key GM dealer network globally.

Chevy will get their own Colorado up scale off road truck and already have the new Trax and will see other new models. Time to invest in GM and make a model they can sell globally.

GMC also if you note has taken on a little Hummer like styling in the larger fenders bulges and the like. I think GM already has tried to fill the gap Hummer left with some of the more upscale GMC models.

An H4 like model could run cheap to expensive based just on all you want in it. For the off Roader a stripped down model and for the status seeker the fully loaded one can be also had.

  5. Now that Toyota has discontinued the FJ Cruiser there’s a void in that segment that GM could fill. On the other hand perhaps Toyota got out because the business wasn’t worth being there. The H4 concept looks much more like a FJ Cruiser than any Jeep I’ve seen.

    1. Actually Toyota is going to remake the FJ again within the next year or two.. It will roughly maintain the same shape and size but have 3 different engines type also possibly a diesel as well. The only draw back is that people fear is the price, it will probably be over priced just as the previous version

  6. The only way to get GM to come back to the 4×4 competition is to stop buying GM products until they realize and start producing what consumers want. The bull about emissions is just that BULL. They have the technology to produce an H4 with an 8 cylinder engine that can out perform any Jeep out there with low emissions. Don’t let tem fool you. How can they justify making the Silverado with the big V8 in them. No No see no reason for them to listen to us, the consumers about wanting a new Hummer when they are selling a lot of Silverado’s and Sierra’s .. LOL and the Colorado (NR2) is their response to the wrangler? LMAO… give me a break face it now with the 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD out equipped with the crawl feature there is no need for an FJ with this truck… Nope Chevy can’t come back with an off road vehicle anymore they are way to far behind. I mean Chevy can no longer compete wit Hyundai, Nissan, and all the other Asian trucks and SUV’s any more so they will just have to keep making the Big ugly expensive trucks. On that note they don’t even listen to the very loyal Silverado owner who have been asking Chevy to do something with the ugly looks of the front end of the truck. (Dodge did a great job for the past 15 or so years. Now there’s a good looking truck.

  7. A rose by any name is still a rose meaning General Motors doesn’t need to call a Hummer to be a Hummer especially as the truck also had a reputation of being overweight, over priced and poor fuel mileage; but to dispel this, GM could build a new truck featuring Hummer styling on the chassis used by the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.

  12. I’m in South Africa and I drive a Hummer H3. Its a 2007 model and it still stands out wherever I go. Where to after a Hummer, not many options once you’ve fallen in love with it. I think it was a bad decision for GM to discontinue the Hummer cause so many loyal fans like myself have been let down. I would definitely buy a Hummer if it came back on the market. Who cares what the environmentalists say, let them drive their Toyota Prius. I just want a Hummer period!

  16. Now with Trump in office and the EPA and the leftist envriowackos being pushed back, and gas prices around the $2 mark.. AND all other other big trucks , SUVs and jeeps being sold.. there is NO reason for GM not to bring back the Hummer line…

  17. Please bring back the Hummer Brand! They blow JEEP out of the water! Hands down an all around better more luxurious vehicle. GM is really missing the boat on this! The Colorado has nothing on the Hummer! I like how NEW MOVIES are being made, still showing HUMMER’s in them as LUXURY VEHICLES!

  18. If off road fans want a good product, why doesn’t GM bring back either a K-5 Blazer/Jimmy type vehicle, or some kind of SUV based on the Colorado/Canyon. Engineer the vehicle to take tons of punishment and last. Make it a simple, off road vehicle that ISN’T a luxury vehicle, throw in a diesel option with an allison transmission and you got yourself a great truck.

    1. i know that i as well as many others HATE all the “luxury options” you dont need power windows , doors, bluetooth, gps, heated seats, etc etc etcetc.. all we want is a good strong, truck, that can go anywhere, pull anything , and is not afraid of mud and snow etc… why do you think we rebuild old 70s and 80s trucks .. they are simple, the run forever, no frills etc… if you like all the frills that is fine the OPTIONS should be there for you to add and buy.. but there needs to be stripped down bare bones versions for those of us that dont want or need all the extra crap.. hell you could cut a easy $20k off the price of any truck if you dump all the extra un-nessessary crap.
