2014 Camaro Z/28 Runs The ‘Ring In An Astounding 7:37.47

There’s fast, then there’s faster. For instance, the upcoming 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is faster than the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, and anything else even remotely close to its expected price range,  around the mighty Nürburgring, running a physics-defying 7:37.47. Of course, it’s also faster than the 580 hp Camaro ZL1, which ran the ‘Ring in an also very impressive 7:41.27.

Oh, and did we mention the run was done in the rain? If you don’t believe us, the video is just below. Turn the volume all the way up to ensure maximum LS7 enjoyment. Pay close attention to the screen fixed on the front wheel; there are points where it’s airborne.

  1. Whoa! I could feel my heart beating faster! What a ride! Kudos! For years, you’ve had the engine and trans. Now you finally got the car right!

  2. Nice!

This bodes well for the 6th gen based on the much lighter Alpha. If they can do this with near 4000 pounds imagine what the new Alpha based car will be capable of.

Mark Stielow and company have done a great job with this older platform and I am just waiting to see what they can do from the start with the next one.

The present is great and the Future will only be better.

  3. Driving the Ring on a computer screen is about as close as I’ll ever get and is awesome but, this Camaro is one of a kind alright. The “rear” wheel in the lower screen is steering the car! New tech for the Camaro?

  4. That is an awesome soundtrack that LS7 makes! Ive just been playing the vid for the sound while i work at my desk! haha. Sounds like the run was made with some form of stability or traction management on though. You can here it cutting power at times, almost if its pulling timing, cutting fuel or both. Sounds cool like the ZL1 when it does it too.

  6. The Z/28 weighs 3600lbs. But I do agree, the Alpha platformed Camaro will be impressive

  7. Faster than a zl1 even in the rain? Amazing! I wonder what the lap time would have been if it was dry…

  8. Does the radio say the temp is 55F? Raining and a bit chilly, too!

I am curious as to what mode the driver selected to do this. Obviously, I don’t expect it to be the comfort mode, but I am curious.

    Nice video. Thanks for sharing!

  9. Remember those people who said it was stupid that this model was going to cost more than the ZL1 because it *only* had 505hp???

  10. Sorry the Z is still at 3800 pounds per GM numbers as they only lost 300 pounds. But even that much helps as less weight adds more performance parameters than more power ever could. Handling and braking are always much more improved with less mass than more HP but you still get the gain in acceleration too.

  11. I was probably remembering the dry weight figure. Even as I said 3600lbs it seemed far too light. Should’ve checked.

  12. There will still be a large slice of those who will still be mad that this is not the lower priced SS replacement as they just want a Z/28 that is of the later mass volume gen vs. the early original limited volume car that the original concept was all about in the first 3 years.

If the Joe Dirt types want a Z that bad at a lower price they can just change the emblems like many have for years.

I would love to see one of these painted up in Penske Sonoco paint of the early cars.

I also love how they did this car with no bow tie on it.

Finally this is just what they did to patch up and get the old model out on a high note. The 6th gen will have Mark Steilow and company working on the next gen right from the start. All the good things will be there even in the lower models as well as the performance models. When GM disbanded the GM Performance Division they integrated these people into the programs to where they design and engineer these cars from the start and not just fix them after they have been on the market. That is why the ATS and CTS are so good even in the base models as well as the upgraded models.

To be honest the disbanding of the division is the best thing that happened to GM as they can infect all the models with their well respected work.
