Ambitious Chevy Fan Trying To Build A Retro-Bodied C8 Corvette Stingray

An ambitious and rather brave Chevy fan is attempting to build a custom-bodied C8 Corvette Stingray inspired by the legendary C2 Corvette in their driveway.

Photos of this highly questionable build were shared to the aptly named /r/ShittyCarMods subreddit this week. The images show a C8 Corvette Stingray with homemade fiberglass body panels inspired by the C2 Corvette, along with C2 Corvette taillights and cutouts for pop-up headlamps. The original poster says they’ve known the owner of this car for over 20 years and that they’ve built several custom-bodied Corvettes in the past – although this latest project certainly seems like the most ambitious one they’ve undertaken.

The builder appears to have an infinity for modern-day Corvettes with retro styling, two separate C5 Corvette Convertibles with styling inspired by the original C1 Corvette can be seen parked behind the C8. The same person allegedly built those two vehicles as well, so while this C8 Corvette project seems difficult to execute, the person behind the project certainly seems to know what they are doing. We certainly hope they know what they are doing, anyway, as they chose a brand new C8 Corvette as their starting off point.

The styling of the C2 Corvette seemingly would not carry over to a mid-engine platform very well, but we’ll save our judgements about this homemade coachbuilt Vette until it’s finished. We’re also eager to see how the builder plans to keep the engine cool, as the fibreglass bodywork has covered up the vehicle’s side intake vents and heat exchangers. The front fascia isn’t complete, however it also looks as though it would cover up the front intake vents and heat exchangers.

Feel free to let us know what you think of this oddball C8 Corvette Stingray in the comments below.

  2. What a Waste of Money.. go in a shop and buy a car

    1. He went into a Chevy dealer ordered and bought a zero miles C8 Vette. I don’t share his vision or balls to even attempt such a re-body but it’s not his first rebody. He has the money so it’s up to him.

  3. Good proportions. This car doesn’t have them.

    1. There’s a right way and a wrong way to point out a single word typo. You just did it the wrong way… the keyboard-warrior-with-nothing-better-to-do way.

      Here’s the right way:

“The builder appears to have an infinity for modern-day Corvettes with retro styling”

Hmm… that might be a problem for the rest of the world.

      1. True – the word should be “ affinity “ not “ infinity “.Need to go back to school and learn to write words correctly. While there might as well learn to speak eloquently since it will be a big plus later in life.

      2. A typo is when you miss a letter or obviously hit the wrong letter. Using infinity instead of affinity happens when you have a poor grasp on the English language. Know the difference!

      3. As Dan points out, that’s not a typo. It’s the misuse of a word by somebody who doesn’t know English.

    2. The correct word is ‘xfinity’, no?

      Reply
      1. ROFL, this car certainly does have a lot in common with Xfinity, both will seriously disappoint you!

  7. This man is brilliant! I love everything about the C8 except for those origami body lines and having no 3-pedal option (that bonkers switch rail isn’t a dealbreaker like the DCT). Can’t wait to see the finished project.

    1. I hear there is a aftermarket 3rd pedal you can add for leg exercises when you activate the actual clutches using
your hands on the steering wheel (there are 2 mechanical clutches that shift faster than your leg), and a
stick shift you can mount in the cup holder for slapping gear-to-gear.

      Reply
    2. Agreed on the DCT, no one wants a modern transmission like a Porsche or Ferrari. Matter of fact, should probably remove the synchros and shift like a true retro.

    3. I hope to never see the finished product.
It’s an insult to the brilliant and visionary minds whom made the C8 even possible.

      Reply
      1. I’m sorry, Visionary? Zora had wanted the Corvette to be mid engine since the early 60’s. They basically built a modern 70’s supercar that looks like an updated 15 year old ferrari design. It’s an amazing machine considering the price/performance but visionary? GM finally listened to their product engineers, not their accountants.

    4. Yes sir. Love to see the finished product.

  8. Stupid, absolutely stupid!

  9. I owned two C2s Corvette and Coupe, Loved them both, BUT that body does not lend itself to the C8 at all. Maybe the Greenwood LeMans Wide body C3 would work better. Applaud the effort, I am not in love with th3 C8 Nose. But this might be a bridge too far for the Glorious C2 Body lines.

  10. The builder is a magician – – was able to change a $75,000 car into a $10,000 parts car.

  11. I wish I had all that money, and time, and no concern for either…

  12. Didn’t it strike anyone else as strange that all of this tedious work is being done outside in his yard?!?!

    1. Dave, that was my first thought. It would make a great home for mice and bugs, not to mention the airborne grit and debris it would collect.

  13. This joker would think that the Karl Corvette rebody monstrosities are REAL beauties.

  14. This pains me. It’s a FrankenVette.

Add in the lack of proper shop facility (like a roof, let alone an actual garage) – this gets weirder.

A lot of work and zero value. Everything my very wise old dad (RIP) encouraged me to avoid.

  16. Looks like they took a front end off of a “63, and the backend off a C8, and stuck them together to make a freak of two great cars. A whole lot of money for epic fail. Big Daddy Roth is building cars again! Even the Rat Fink is embarrassed!
