Sharks On Chevy Windshields: Some People Don’t Like The Idea

Earlier in the year, GM Authority reported on a trend called “Chevy sharking,” wherein a Chevrolet enthusiast will place a small toy shark or foam shark keychain on another Chevrolet vehicle that they admire, typically a Camaro. The trend is similar to Jeep “ducking,” wherein a Jeep enthusiast will leave a rubber duck on a Jeep as a gesture of mutual vehicular appreciation. While some people find the Chevy sharking trend to be cute and harmless, others, including several GM Authority readers, are less enthused by the idea.

An example of the Chevy sharking trend.

Following our reporting on the Chevy sharking phenomenon, GM Authority received a few messages and comments from readers who don’t want to get sharked:

“Do not shark my car. In fact don’t touch my car at all. If I’m the one paying for it why is someone else playing with it?” states GM Authority reader Brian.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t like it if someone left a shark on my Chevy. This applies to my first car, which was a beater C truck, or my new Z06 Z07. It’s my car, don’t touch it,” writes GM Authority reader John R.

“This is exactly why I want GM to record what’s going outside my car when it’s parked. If someone touches my car, I’ll be sure to find then and touch em right back,” says GM Authority reader Shawn C.

As GM Authority covered last month, Chevy sharking was first observed with the Chevy Camaro, specifically the fifth-generation model. Although the Facebook group “Sharked Camaros” takes credit for starting the trend, a variety of videos have sprung up across social media showing various Chevys getting sharked, including videos posted to TikTok and Instagram.

Sharks are likely associated with the fifth-generation Camaro due to the fifth-gen’s styling, with a sharp front end, aggressive features, and gill-like vertical slats in the rear quarter panels all lending to the look. Even so, the trend has spread to other Chevy models as well, including the Traverse and Equinox.

Nevertheless, some people remain hesitant to embrace the trend. Which leads us to ask – what do you think? Is Chevy sharking harmless fun, or would you be annoyed if you got sharked? Vote in the poll and let us know!

  1. Seems harmless.

  2. Like I said before. I live in a state (NJ) where there is little concept of respecting other peoples personal property. A state where you can expect to come back to your car in a parking lot only to find a gash, scratch, or dent on your car and no “Sorry” note. So somebody leaving a toy shark (or a duck in the case of my Cadillac) is the least of my concerns.

        1. No one has any respect or civility for each other any more. I’m not for PC-ness but I don’t see why we can’t at least be civil with each other.

      2. I don’t base where I live on how others treat my car (unless its a place hostile to overall car ownership). Right now, they have some of the best schools in the country and I am near NYC which has plenty of work for me. When I retire and my son is having his own life, I will re-evaluate where I live. But for now, for all its flaws, I do love my state of NJ.

    1. What will you do when a bird drops its excrement on your car, and the hot Sun bakes the stain into your paint?

  4. I’m am part of the sharking on Camaros, on the FB page, and think its cool as $hit. Sorry some people are “Karens”s” about it. Its rubber wont hurt the vehicle. I am extremely picky about people near my car, but its a mutual respect and we treat the cars as we treat ours. Its a way of expressing a mutual like for the Camaros. Not sure how it spread from there. You don’t see Jeep people complaining about the ducks, their appreciative of the acknowledgement. But this world has an abundant of “Karens”.

  5. I get that it’s good fun for some people. Unfortunately, given the current state of society, I would prefer my stuff to just be left alone.

  6. I would rather people just leave my car or truck alone. Same way with sales flyers. If your’re leaning over my vehicle to put a flyer under the wiper, there is a good chance you could scratch the body.

  11. No fun left in the USA I guess we will be reading about someone getting shot soon. But your honor he put a 2 ounce foam toy on my door handle. Last week I shot at the kid who put the flyer for th charity car wash under my wiper blade. But I missed him

  12. What ever happened to having a reason to smile? I think it would be fun to be at a car show with my old k 30 dually parked next to a jeeper shmoe and go ” what ya got there? 7 ducks? Ya got 28 sharks…, it’s a chevy thing, you wouldn’t understand”. Then have American beer with guy and probably make another new friend for the day. I do however agree “if” this turns out to be a chevy appreciation trend, let’s keep them off of common dailys, because yes it’s probably gonna annoy the commoners. There’s a reason he drives a white acadia or black traverse. They want to be left alone. Common sense. Don’t shark there rig to think your being funny. And honestly I’d rather hand some one a shark and verbally tell them there 70 chevelle is sweet and ask about it, but on the wiper Is harmless if no one is around. I’m sure if you don’t know why it’s there it might irritate you but once word gets out it’ll be appreciated how many people like your sweet ride. Took me awhile to figure out why jeepers had rubber ducks on there dash but I don’t own a jeep. Lol! Have some fun, don’t forget to laugh and be respectful of others, we’re all in this together.

  14. its seriously not that big of a deal. dare i say its actually ridiculous. worse things come into contact with your car on a daily basis. if you are offended because someone put a toy on your car, you seriously need to get a grip. if it offends you that much simply throw it away. not to mention the intention behind putting it there wasnt a malicious one at that. its different if you feel uneasy about finding something on your car that wasnt there before i.e like a weird substance but this is literally just a toy 😂

    1. Exactly. I guess things are just different in the Midwest, we would just say “Thanks’ and move on with our life. Seems like others would put out a hit and complain for a week that someone got near their car. Get over it, it’s not like they put a brick on it.

  20. When did we get so hostile and territorial? It’s a harmless gesture not meant to harm our precious objects, just meant to say “Nice car!” I bet a lot of you flip people of when you get waved at, too. America needs to take a chill pill.

  24. I would have thought better of “Chevy folks”. Geez get off your high horse, is just a foam rubber shark. A sign of appreciation. It’s not being dragged down the side of your car or thrown at it. I get where you are coming from but putting a toy on your car is more acceptable than parking to close or door dinging. You people are probably the ones that park your car across 4 spaces at the very end of a parking lot or garage. I bet that Dodge or Ford people aren’t as upright as you privileged few.

  27. I really wish they would leave a shark. I have two trucks, a 98’and a 95, have done major work to the 98′ including replacing the motor. And with a 454 and nice body, Green truck is the nicest rig I’ve had yet. Also the first one I bought with my grown-up money. They both mean a lot and it’s enough to leave me blushing in my steel toes when someone complements my trucks
