General Motors’ SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture in China has just unveiled the all-new Wuling Light of ASEAN Concept as a preview of its future global New Energy product strategy.

The automaker officially unveiled the all-new Wuling Light of ASEAN Concept on September 24th at the opening of the 2024 China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning, China, the site of the 21st economic and trade event between China and the ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) used the acronym of the association in the name of its new concept car.

In fact, the all-new Wuling Light of ASEAN Concept debuted as the first global new energy concept vehicle developed by SGMW for the next phase of its expansion into emerging markets around the world. As such, the all-new Light of ASEAN Concept showcases the company’s vision for future smart mobility by introducing a new design and technology interpretation of Wuling’s future global products.

In particular, the all-new Wuling Light of ASEAN Concept represents SGMW’s vision for a compact-sized all-electric global sedan with an advanced next-generation design language that promises to elevate the aesthetic proposition of Wuling’s future vehicles. It features a sleek fastback body and 2+2 seating, combined with eye-catching aerodynamic gull-wing doors.

Inspired by the advanced design of fighter jets, the Wuling Light of ASEAN Concept features a unique “cross-star cone”-shaped front end that combines a set of angular headlights connected by a horizontal light strip, punctuated right in the middle by a downward vertical element. SGMW claims that the sharp front-end shapes, slanted A-pillar and floating rear wing help achieve an ultra-low drag coefficient of just 0.18.

The all-new Wuling Light of ASEAN Concept’s “zero-gravity dual-mode cabin” design combines the proposition of a comfortable family sedan with the excitement of a sports car, while boasting the most advanced infotainment technology and autonomous driving systems. These include a “follow-me” intelligent driving robot, an Incell+ LTPS ultra-high-definition borderless display with eye-tracking technology, jet-like controls and an immersive sound field.

The all-new Wuling Light of ASEAN Concept will inspire SGMW’s next-generation global-reach new energy vehicles with global reach, which are part of an aggressive strategy to expand the company’s presence in emerging markets. The joint venture has manufacturing facilities in China and Indonesia, from where it has exported more than 1.07 million units under the Wuling and Chevrolet brands to some 104 countries in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia.

  1. Make it into a Buick, call it Electra and sell it in the US.

  2. This is more Pontiac-flavored than Buick, with that variation on “coke bottle” lower sides and a split prow, just needs a pair of honeycomb grilles added just below the chrome trim there. And of course, a hot gasoline engine, otherwise, keep it.

    1. A very interesting design concept. I too wouldn’t mind seeing it as a Pontiac, given how that front end can be easily transformed into a twin grilled arrowhead shape.
