Chinese automaker BYD Auto has unveiled the 2025 BYD Seagull, refreshing the small all-electric hatchback with a few updates and changes. Critically, pricing for the BYD Seagull is exceptionally affordable, with prices ranging between 69,800 and 85,800 yuan, or $9,636 and $11,845 at current exchange rates (8/1/2024). Although the BYD Seagull is unlikely to be sold in the U.S., its highly affordable price tag should serve as a “clarion call” for U.S. automakers, especially in light of GM’s claim that the next-generation Chevy Bolt will be the cheapest EV in the U.S. market, even as BYD looks to enter the Canadian market.
Per a report from Car News China, the new BYD Seagull is available in three specific trim levels: the Vitality Edition, which is equipped with a 30.08 kWh battery and is priced at 69,800 yuan ($9,636), the Freedom Edition, which is also equipped with a 30.08 kWh battery pack and is priced at 75,800 yuan ($10,464), and the range-topping Flying Edition, which is equipped with a 38.88 kWh battery pack and is priced at 85,800 yuan ($11,845). Range-per-charge is set at 305 km (190 miles) in the Vitality Edition and Freedom Edition, and 405 km (252 miles) in the Flying Edition, per the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle.
The BYD Seagull rides on the automaker’s e-Platform 3.0 architecture and measures in at 148.8 inches long, 67.5 inches wide, and 60.6 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 98.4 inches. By contrast, the current Chevy Bolt EV is 163.2 inches long, 69.5 inches wide, and 63.4 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 102.4 inches.
Motivation is sourced from a single permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 55 kW, or 74 horsepower, with peak torque measured at 135 Nm (100 pound-feet). With a DC quick-charge connection, the battery will charge from 30 percent to 80 percent in roughly 30 minutes at room temperature.
Standard spec includes a seven-inch floating instrument panel, a 10.1-inch central control screen, and, on the upper trims, wireless device charging, heated seats, and six-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat. The infotainment setup includes four-speaker audio, Bluetooth, voice control, Wi-Fi with a 4G connection, and keyless entry.
As GM Authority covered previously, the Biden administration recently increased tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, as well as Chinese-produced EV components.

Nothing to be concerned about because this car wouldn’t even sell in the US if it was available. Cars like the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa Note, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent, and Chevy Sonic have all disappeared because no one buys them. Even if this car was $10k in the US (which it won’t be that cheap), Americans would rather spend that $10k on a nice pre-owned Civic or Corolla with low miles (or a used Model 3 if we want to talk EV). For the money, they may not have a new car but certainly more car for that money and that is what Americans want. At best, this model would be a college campus security runabout vehicle and thats it.
Again with the downvotes. The point I was trying to make is that if there are any BYD models to watch it would be the Atto 3, maybe the Seal (since the Model 3 has decent sales), and any other models they have that are larger (Han, Yuan Plus, etc.). But the Seagull and Dolphin won’t sell well in the US.
Can someone explain too me the BYD model called
“Freedom”,
when “No one in China IS FREE????”
range?? can they even do a full 18 holes?
if it comes to canada it will sell like crazy because canadians have no loyalty, they would sell there mother to save a dime. kill there childrens job to save a dime!
I agree it would sell like crazy in Canada, but only if there is a network to service and not for the reasons you state.
We do have loyalty, but in these economic times . food on the table or a roof over your head for our families tops loyalty to a car manufacturer who for decades produced poor quality and now practices price gouging to the extreme.
we would not sell our mothers or kill our kids to save a dime , not in the country I know called Canada.
We would in America. Well maybe not our own children and mothers but our fellow countrymen and their mothers and kids? Absolutely. I mean look at Warren Buffet and the men behind Blackrock and Vanguard backing BYD, the threat to the American auto manufacturers. BYD could kill off American auto manufacturing but these men would have made billions. It only cost them the price of American manufacturing and workers now unable to put food on the table for their mothers and kids. But it’s cool though atleast those men are good and we get cheap cars. Buffet can now replace his XTS.
If you would be taxed to the max like we are under Trudeau wacko policies, you would do the same !
kinda looks like a battery operated Yugo..
The latest international news is BYD making an agreement to supply EVs to Uber for other nations. Look it up!
I saw that on Carscoops. But I don’t get how that works. Don’t Uber drivers use their own personal cars? Is BYD donating the cars to the drivers?
Not donating, but offering attractive financing. Probably more like indentured servants. I recall a number of truckers getting snookered into a deal where they would get a lease deal so they could be an independent trucker and then have to work for almost free (they got something like a dollar an hour net) to pay the lease. Desperate people do desperate things.
Looks like BYD is going to buy out dodge ! From what i hear ! That wont be a Brighten your day moment for alot of americans ! 😪
I had to look this up for myself and found nothing online except for one YouTube video. And YouTube is full of clickbait.
Can someone explain too me the BYD model called

They are free. Free of personal liberties and personal rights.
I would buy the BYD Seagull for sure right of it way if it were available in the US.
