As GM Authority reported late last year, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD recently made landfall in Australia and New Zealand, featuring a right-hand-drive (RHD) configuration distributed by GM Specialty Vehicles (GMSV). However, despite the welcome popularity of the Silverado HD in Oceania, a report from CarExpert indicates that there aren’t any plans to offer the Silverado 3500 HD Down Under.
As a reminder, currently, GMSV offers the Silverado 1500 and Silverado 2500 HD to customers in Australia and NZ. While the 2024 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD boasts a much higher towing capacity than the Silverado 2500 HD, GM says there’s just no demand for the most robust heavy-duty pickup in the Oceanic market.
“Obviously the truck that we have here, it’s a very particular [and] niche market,” said Jess Bala, managing director of GM Australia and New Zealand. “Those buyers are loving the big trucks. What we’re loving to see as often were they would buy one and they’re coming back for a second one… It meets the capability that our customers need, whether it’s the 4.5-ton towing, just the payload, etcetera, that goes along with it.”
She added, “We certainly haven’t seen any demand that warrants anything bigger… With the Silverado 2500 HD, we think we hit the nail on the head.”
For reference, the Australia-spec Silverado 2500 HD is capable of hauling up to 10,205 kg (22,500 pounds), compared to the Silverado 3500 HD, which can tow up to 16,329 kg (36,000 pounds).
Currently, GMSV’s chief rival in Oceania is Ram Trucks Australia, which offers the Ram 1500, Ram 2500 and Ram 3500, the latter of which offers dual rear wheels as opposed to the Silverado 2500 HD, which only features single rear wheels. However, buyers interested in getting their hands on the Chevy Silverado 3500 HD can still do so by way of independent vehicle importers, or through aftermarket conversion companies.

GM is acting as if they aren’t offering the 3500HD DRW in the States as well. The 3500HD w/L5P Diesel has been under heavy constraint for most DOSP cycles for MY 24….. Come on GM, you can do better.
