Volvo has unveiled the new Volvo EM90, the Swedish brand’s first-ever all-electric premium multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), set for launch in China. The Volvo EM90 is characterized as “a space for living on the move,” and incorporates a 116 kWh battery pack and 200-kW electric motor, sleek styling, and loads of interior tech. When it hits the market, the Volvo EM90 will rival the Buick GL8, another MPV sold in China.
The exterior design incorporates the automaker’s “Thor’s Hammer” headlight treatment, as well as an illuminated logo and large, rounded shapes. Illumination in the rear includes a vertical taillight treatment. Four exterior colors are offered, while 19-inch and 20-inch aero wheels are available.
With regard to the powertrain, the Volvo EM90 covers an estimated 738 km (459 miles) per charge under the CLTC testing cycle. Specs include a 116 kWh battery pack and 200-kW electric motor, sending the MPV from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.3 seconds. Charging from 10 percent battery to 80 percent battery can take less than 30 minutes. There’s also bi-directional charging capabilities. Under the skin is Geely’s SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform.
Inside, the Volvo EM90 offers a 21-speaker stereo from Bowers & Wilkins, as well as 5G web connectivity and a 15.4-inch driver infotainment screen. A 15.6-inch screen is mounted in the roof, folding down to entertain rear-seated passengers.
A broad range of safety and advanced driver assist systems are on offer as well, enabled by a suite of sensors, cameras, and radar systems. Highlights include emergency braking, fatigued driving reminder, and lane departure warning. There’s also an air purification system capable of removing 95 percent of all PM 2.5 particulates.
Pre-orders for the Volvo EM90 are now open in China. Pricing is set at 818,000 yuan, or US$112,199 based on current exchange rates (11/13/2023).
Volvo aims to become a fully electric automaker by the 2030 timeframe.

CLTC testing cycle is a different animal from the EPA test cycle. If I had to guess it would mostly likely be a 350 mile range at best on the EPA.
“Iron Man” fans should love that front end…
Who ever thought Volvo would chase Buick? Who ever thought Buick would made good products yet not sell them in US?
