A labor union representing GM workers in India is suing the automaker and GM CEO Mary Barra for unpaid compensation following GM’s exit from the country.
According to a recent report from Reuters, the new filing was made earlier this week to the High Court of Bombay on January 16th. The union, which represents some 1,086 factory workers, states that GM did not pay compensatory wages of 50 percent of the monthly salary starting in April of last year, as ordered by a local industrial court following allegedly illegal termination. Per Reuters, a union representative has stated that GM owes workers around $250 million rupees (roughly $3 million at current conversion rates, 1/20/2023).
GM and workers have been engaged in legal battles since 2021 following the company’s exit from India. GM halted new car sales in India in 2017, but continued to produce vehicles in India for export until December of the 2020 calendar year. GM has since ceased all Indian operations and continues to pursue the sale of its production facility in Maharashtra. GM was previously engaged in talks to sell the facility to Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor, however, the sale fell through last year.
According to the labor union now suing GM, the automaker’s refusal to pay compensation “blatantly” violates the industrial court’s order. The union has consequently urged the court to hold GM and its executives in contempt, even calling for imprisonment as punishment.
“The workers are unable to feed their families, pay for medical expenses, pay for their children’s education,” the union states in the latest filing.
Meanwhile, a GM spokesperson states that the automaker is “very confident” in its legal position, adding that it continues to “explore options for sale” of the Maharashtra plant. Earlier filings from GM state that the industrial court acted beyond its power in ordering compensation, and that generous severance packages were previously offered to workers.

This is not a conflict between boss and employee. This battle is for justice. If you do not respect the order of Supreme Court of India, you are a criminal. It seems that GM is working only for profit and not for the community. FBI should take action against GM CEO who are criminals of Indian Govt. Because of GM ceo’s contempt of court criminal activity , is seems being defamed The U.S. name in other country
Wrong move. GM should have kept it’s foothold there. India will be China’s second biggest manufacturing competitor in a few years. If manufacturing has to occur out of US, then it hopefully will be anywhere but China. Read what is happening with Apple, in their too big to fail relationship with China.
Seeing that GM has left Europe, closed down Holden in Australia and is losing money. It might be just a few years before GM is asking for another bailout. Just let it close for good.
Mary Barra should be locked up before she drives GM to its final bankruptcy. GM did the same thing with their delco/Delphi employees. Thousands are still battling with GM to honor its commitments for almost 15 years now.
GM employees from Lordstown Warren and Baltimore are also waiting for GM to make good on obligations from way back to 2019. GM still stalls even after arbitration results declared GM was in error.
This behavior by Mary is criminal.
Lock her up! Lock her up!
How are us republicans going to save our country if we’re not allowed to suspend the constitution and arrest people for business decisions we don’t agree with! Burn the constitution to own the libs!
Settle down Beavis
