GM Energy Introduced As Energy Management Products And Services Ecosystem

GM has announced the creation of GM Energy, a new division that will combine the existing Ultium Charge 360 service with the new Ultium Home and Ultium Commercial services in an effort to create an energy ecosystem where customers can control their energy needs.

Designed to give customers comprehensive energy management solutions, GM Energy has the ability to provide:

  • Bi-directional charging
    • Vehicle-to-home (V2H)
    • Vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
  • Stationary storage
  • Solar products
  • Software applications
  • Cloud management tools
  • Microgrid solutions
  • Hydrogen fuel cells

“The reliability of the U.S. electrical power grid has never been more important,” said vice president of GM EV Growth Operations Travis Hester. “GM Energy has the opportunity to help deliver sustainable energy products and services that can help mitigate the effect of power outages and provide customers with resilient and cost-effective energy management.”

GM Energy is working with several companies to expand this new initiative to customers. Among them is SunPower, one of the nation’s leading solar technology and energy services providers. Together, the two organizations will develop and offer a home energy system that will allow customers to power their homes from the battery of a compatible vehicle, which would help alleviate anxiety about blackouts and allow homes to operate at full capacity during peak rate times. This home energy system will be made available alongside the launch of the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV, which is expected to begin production in the fall 2023.

“GM Energy’s mission is to offer customers access to a full suite of energy products and services, including solutions beyond the vehicle, accelerating the seamless transition to an all-electric future,” Hester added. “With the expansion of our enterprise business through GM Energy and one of the most comprehensive portfolios of energy management products and services available, we will help to reduce the barriers of entry for sustainable power and further accelerate the mass adoption of EVs.”

You can say that again! I’m Currently waiting since last May 19th for my FIRM ORDER Caddy Lyriq, and I finally found out I only have to wait (maybe) 9 months more for my 1 1/3 year old new battery promised for my BOLT EUV purchased in June, 2021.

Too Bad GM forgot how to run a production line.

It’s all about vendor production lines and transportation supply chains. 90+% of a motor vehicle’s parts are vendor made. The forced Covid closures screwed up the transportation links and vendor factories. Many vendors had to take out bankruptcy just like many restaurants and motels. Most of the world is on backorder. I had a very hard time sourcing new Toyo 235 -85, 16, highway tread tires for my Suburban.

Caterpillar is several months to nearly two years out on machines and engines.

It’s a global backlogged thing. All commodity prices are at record highs. Inflation is roaring.

  3. As a GM fan and more importantly as a GM Shareholder (personally that is) very glad to see GM following Tesla.
This Market will just keep getting bigger and bigger each and every year for at least another Decade most likely two Decades.
But on the other hand I have no idea why GM keeps wasting R&D Money on Hydrogen…..makes no sense.

  4. Why oh why did GM unload Detroit Diesel to Roger Penske for $30 million? Then Penske sells Detroit Diesel a few years later to Daimler for a couple of billion. DD has a tremendous national dealer network and has been rocking with DD ever since, expanding their Outer Drive East plant in Detoit.
Why do I say all this? Because DD was/is the leader in standby emergency electric power systems for commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities. Energy management my friends. You need energy in many cases instantaneously. DD with Cat dropping out of the on highway truck engine game has gained big time in this business.
Now GM sees what a Musk unit is doing and wants to emulate it. Switchgear, batteries, solar, hydrogen engines. The resurrection of a business that GM once had with a huge national dealer network.
