2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 Battery Weighs 2,923 Pounds

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 is a very heavy vehicle, with the battery-electric truck tipping the scales at a frankly absurd 9,063 pounds. That’s not the only eyebrow-raising weight figure related to the Hummer EV, however, as the weight of the 246.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is even more shocking.

According to a GM document filed with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this week, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1’s battery pack tips the scales at 2,923 pounds. That’s heavier than the vast majority of modern-day compact cars, including a 2017 Chevy Cruze LS Automatic, which weighs in at just 2,870 pounds.

Hummer EV Ultium battery pack

As we reported earlier this week, the GMC Hummer EV has EPA-certified efficiency ratings of 43 MPGe highway and 51 MPGe city for a combined rating of 47 MPGe. This is a rather low energy use rating for a battery-electric vehicle, however the GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 has a near-1000 horsepower powertrain and is loaded with virtually every available option and feature, reducing its efficiency.

As GM Authority reported previously, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 boasts a GM-estimated range figure of 329 miles. This range figure applies to the Edition 1 launch trim level only, which comes standard with rather heavy off-road wheels and large 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory off-road tires. We expect future GMC Hummer EV trim levels, like the soon-to-be-released EV3X, to offer slightly better range and efficiency thanks to smaller wheels/tires and the presence of fewer features.

The GMC Hummer EV3X will arrive in the fall of 2022 with prices starting at $99,995, while the EV2X will be available in the spring of 2023, starting at $89,995. The entry-level Hummer EV2 will arrive in the spring of 2024 priced from $79,995. As we noted previously, these models will feature different battery and powertrain combinations and will likely thus have different EPA ratings for both range and efficiency.

Production of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup takes place at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan, which will also eventually build the GMC Hummer EV SUV, as well.

I know 1 person with a TRX and 2 people that have owned 4 Raptors between them and none of them have ever driven on anything more than a gravel road. The “EV offroad” criticism is baseless for a vehicle like this. A $100k factory offroad bruiser is about looks, not function.

Of course there are a few exceptions, they are very much the minority

GM is selling this and will draw a lot of income from their sales making other models cheaper sooner for average buyers able to buy what fits their lives.

The harsh reality it to pay off development cost via a Bolt or Volt is a difficult act.

Much like the performance found in a Camaro was paid off by Corvette owners at a higher price.

  15. I’m interested in the 247 kwh battery….. This is much more than double the Caddy Lyriq’s ‘half-size’ 100 kwh battery….

Seeing as the Caddy will charge at home at 80 amperes (presumably future cost-reduced models will have GM’s now ‘standardized’ 48 ampere charger for their more economy products), and even at 80 amperes the vehicle will take 14 hours to fully recharge – one wonders whether the HUMMER will optionally add TWO charger ports to cut this time to 7 hours..

Dedicating 200 amperes (required for a 160 ampere continuous (over 3 hour) load) to the garage to recharge ONE vehicle is frankly a bit of an eyebrow raiser but I’m sure customers such as the Governator can afford it.

As far as Trophy Vehicles go, this is actually QUITE CHEAP to Refuel….

I looked at Car and Driver’s review of the $75,000 RAM 1500 they advertise 10 times a day on TV, joking that they don’t see why the connecting rods don’t bend what with all the fuel rushing into the cylinders and that this vehicle Causes Global Warming in and of itself since on a good day the thing gets 10 mpg and MUCH WORSE if you try towing anything…

Seeing as Gasoline is on its march to $4 per gallon, that means the Very Masculine RAM 1500 will set you back at least $250 to make a round trip between Buffalo and Albany, New York. Meanwhile, the Hummer can do it for $70; a steal by comparison.

    1. GRREAT observation on Home Charging. To charge an EV with any speed is going to create the need for much higher capacity amp boxes and the appropriate wiring into the garage. In our case the outside boxes are located on the other side of the house from the garage. Think about apartments, stores, parking lots, parking decks, etc. Power consumption will enormous and occur primarily at night, which as we all know, is when renewables create virtually no power. Of course there is a whole area of discussion related to dead batteries while traveling and how to get those charged until you can get to a charging station and the wasted time a tow driver is spending.
When ideology meets reality with a meaningful number of EV’s on the road the it will be interesting to see what happens.

      1. Thanks Jaybird – of course – if I knew anyone who owned one of these things – they’d not necessarily drive 329 miles in 2 consecutive days…..For those who don’t and stopped by in my driveway, i’d recharge them at 32 amperes as I do my 3 evs..

Just because a vehicle CAN charge at 80 or 160 amperes doesn’t mean they absolutely have to always… So I figure using my relatively ancient facilities would give the HUMMER another 9 miles of travel for every hour it was plugged in…. So assuming someone was 18 miles from home and they had an absolutely dead battery (unlikely) they’d only have to stick around for 2 hours.

Looked at EV’s but mapped several trips and even around town the constant hassle of charging and the modifications to get the largest charger in the garage was unworkable. Having said all that I probably will buy a CyberTruck… LOL, but only as a weekend warrior.

          1. Haha Jaybird I’ve owned one Tesla – that was enough unreliability for one lifetime…. The car was great WHEN IT WORKED….

GM products are more plain-jane, but usually much better values, and they’re far more reliable.

I dunno about the HUMMER, but I wish they offered any SUV model with only ONE drive motor….. I don’t need any of the bells and whistles and since I have the cheapest Lizard Insurance they won’t insure any ‘exotic’ vehicles that have more horsepower than a normal vehicle.

Obviously the Caddy Lyriq will qualify for the discount insurance since the 2wd version only has one smallish motor.

            Reply
          2. As far as ‘unworkable facilities’ GM is – with the purchase of their CHEAPEST product (the
Bolt(s)), giving $1,000 off the electrician’s invoice to upgrade the wiring for a 40 ampere (usually 7.6 kw with the included cord, or over 9 kw if you have your own larger cord) charging receptacle. Beefy ‘220’ Cord is standard with the EUV and optional with the EV. That’s pretty generous… Unfortunately I had no use for such an offer, so took the $500 EVGO fast charger credit – unfortunately, I have to drive 260 miles in one direction that I normally do not go to use it. Good for 3 years so we’ll see.

We do not pay enough into it. It is considered Political Suicide to introduce a higher Gas Tax. Which makes no sense as we drive around town trying to avoid car sized potholes on the roads.

Sure: GM is recalling every SINGLE Bolt EV and Bolt EUV ever made…..

If I had known GM was going to do this – I would have kept my 2017 EV with 50,000 miles on it…. (I traded it in on a 2022 EUV June 2021 – since trade in values were ridiculously high – But I’ll get a new battery for the new car anyway with the resets – it just won’t be as FANTASTIC a deal as it would have been otherwise…

              Details?

An example is the easiest way to explain it….Suppose another person has the same thing I had before I traded it in…

A 5 year old car with 50,000 miles on it… The original battery warranty was 8 years/100,000 miles…It was rated 60 kilowatt-hours. Now in the next month or so, they will install a BRAND SPANKING NEW BATTERY – which is 8% BIGGER which means they are getting a ‘bigger gas tank’ absolutely free.

The original battery warranty at this point for this car has 3 years/50,000 miles left on it. Resetting this ADDS 50,000 miles and FIVE YEARS onto the warranty… So unbeknownst to the original purchaser in 2017 – they get, in effect an 11 year/150,000 mile warranty…..

Obviously someone who has driven 98,000 miles on their 2017 bolt would in effect get an 11 year/198,000 mile warranty. THAT IS UNBELIEVABLY Generous. Plus 8% bigger than the original…..

Sorry – I thought you were talking about the BOLT recall when you are asking about the HUMMER.

Battery Warranty 8 years / 100,000 miles – what all GM vehicles have been since the 2011 model year, and models the Chevy Spark EV, Both Generations (2011-2015, and 2016-2019) of the VOLT, the 2014-2016 Cadillac ELR and then the later CT6-PHEV now ALL discontinued but the battery warranties – to the extent they haven’t timed out, are still honored.

I’m sure any battery trouble will be rectified at a GMC Dealership by a Certified GMC technician who has gone through proper battery replacement training .
