2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup MPGe Numbers Uncovered

The Environmental Protection Agency this week confirmed the efficiency ratings for the GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1.

As first reported by Car and Driver, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 has earned EPA-certified efficiency ratings of 43 MPGe highway and 51 MPGe city for a combined rating of 47 MPGe.

A GM spokesman told the publication the automaker will not display the vehicle’s MPGe ratings on its window sticker because vehicles that weigh more than 8,500 pounds are not required to do so. As per a GM document filed with the EPA this week, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 officially tips the scales at 9,063 pounds. The 246.8 kWh lithium-ion Ultium battery pack accounts for a large percentage of that surprisingly curb weight, weighing in at 2,923 pounds. That’s roughly 50 pounds heavier than an entire 2017 Chevy Cruze.

As GM Authority reported previously, the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 boasts a GM-estimated range figure of 329 miles. This range figure applies to the Edition 1 launch trim level only, which also comes with a 1,000 horsepower tri-motor powertrain, giving it the ability to accelerate from zero to 60 in as little as three seconds with Watts to Freedom mode engaged. This trim level is likely a bit heavier than future variants will be, seeing as it is equipped with virtually every available option for the pickup. This includes the Extreme Off-Road Package, which adds rather heavy components like underbody skid plates, 18-inch off-road wheels and large 35-inch tires.

The rest of the Hummer EV lineup, including the EV3X and the EV2X trim levels, will launch at a later date. The EV3X will arrive in the fall of 2022 with prices starting at $99,995, while the EV2X will be available in the spring of 2023, starting at $89,995. The entry-level Hummer EV2 will arrive in the spring of 2024 priced from $79,995. These models will feature different battery and powertrain combinations and will likely thus have different EPA ratings for both range and efficiency.

Production of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, and eventually the future GMC Hummer EV SUV as well, takes place at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan.

    1. It’s still 4 times better than the old gasoline version which got around 10-14 mpg. Remember, all vehicle markets need to go electric for us to make a dent in global warming.

        1. That is simply not true. Yes, it actually will help slow global warming, because it’s much better than the old gasoline Hummer and better than most current gasoline cars. Which is better for the environment, a gasoline SUV like the Toyota Sienna Hybrid 2WD that gets 36 MPG or the rich person’s monstrosity, the Hummer EV 4WD, that gets 43 MPGe? It’s the Hummer EV 4WD. The rich create more CO2 than any other class, so anything to help reduce their carbon footprint is helping.

  2. Lets dig the earth for minerals, lets destroy roads with heavy vehicles that don’t pay gas tax to repair roads, lets market it as a green vehicle, oh and lets pretend those batteries aren’t toxic to the environment once their life is up.

        The vehicle has a cool factor, don’t get me wrong. I like it just as I like a big V8 duramax with gobs of torque.
        But it is not a green vehicle just because it is electric.
        Big trucks damage roads, and there is no arguing that.

          The average Driver pays $50-$60 in Gasoline Road Tax per year when purchasing Gasoline.
          The Hummer is not a Mass Market vehicle…..it is basically a Bad Ass Toy for those who can afford one.
          I would chose the SUV version.

  3. Hahaha wow is that ever abysmal! What is even the point?!? If it can’t get at least 100 MPGe then the environmental footprint of that gigantic battery makes it dirtier than a ICE truck over its lifetime!

  4. This is not for the environment this is so automakers can still larger cars and trucks people really want vs the small science experiment gone wrong looking Leaf’s etc.

    These will be a small part of the market and are really for now to help cover the development cost of the new technology. It will be down sized and scaled more for the average buyer in coming products and at a cost about where we are at with ICE if not less moving forward.

    Once development is paid off it will become much more profitable as the ICE development cost continues to rise. Besides how many cylinders can you cut and how long can you shut an engine off at a light?

    I hate losing ICE too but we all have to suck it up as I do not want a Turbo 2 cylinder truck that only runs on Tuesdays with both cylinders.

    My greater fear is form my classic car. Will they prevent me from driving it at some point. Will they make the fuel so caustic it will eat my tank? Will they just stick me with a synthetic fuel I can’t afford?

    That is my greater fear right now as it is time to get some emotional intelligence on this topic and realize like much else this is coming and we are not going to change it. Also it is not the end of the world. You will still get to where you need to go with little issue.

    Other than the Corvette and Camaro there is little in my price range in ICE that I will miss. Just a bunch of 3 cylinder CUV models that really don’t interest me anyways.

        1. See where you’re coming from. But I am old enough to remember the horrible malaise period. In 1980 we were told there would be no RWD cars by 1985, no more V8s, all engines would be diesel, pickup trucks for the average consumer would be the S-10 and Ranger, and Ford and GM cancelled future large pickup truck programs. We see how that turned out. I agree EVs will be a significant chunk of the market moving forward, but until all the challenges are overcome, it will take decades to fully erraticate ICE vehicles.

            The globalization people are pushing things now and there are more of them and more money behind them.

            Also look around the V8 just ain’t around like it used to be and will be even less so EV or not.

            Where did GM or even I say this was an over night change. This is like boiling frogs and the heat will turn up slowly over the next 20 years.

            Has GM given a end date to all ICE production. No.

            People on the web are striking out mostly based on emotion and not reality.

            When I see my racing vendors start to search for alternatives to their present products I know the hand writing is on the wall.

            People need to have some emotional intelligence to really understand what is going here and not base it on how they feel.

            Just go down this thread and there is so much not true or taken out of context to fit someone’s feelings it is crazy.

            Speaking of the 80’s. I recall getting emotional that the computers put an end to modifications. Never happened. Then there was the end of the carburetor. That was to end modifications. Never did. Same here this stuff is going to grow slowly and for the most part while it may be different life will not change much.

            The majority of the market is just people who what to get from point a to be. If they are sold a vehicle that can do that and not cost them as much they will buy it. They are not hung up on 1000 mile range or styling [Honda Fit for example]. They just want affordable and reliable. If they don’t need to change oil more will be pleases. This is no longer an enthusiast market. People like you and I are no longer the dominate customer.

            I have to keep up with this for my work and I already have seen the hand writing on the wall. When the CES show becomes more important to MFG than Detroit that is telling.

            The end of ICE will mostly come via government doing away with fuel.. Not sure how soon but I can see it coming. Porsche is not working on synthetic fuel for fun. They are already pushing away gas yard tools many places. I do get emotional about my back pack leaf blower and gas snow blower as electric is not going to do my work on my property.

            But like things up in Canada many things we may be willing to fight for will be made a crime. Out freedoms are growing smaller daily but that is another story for another day.

            1. GM said it plans to “…eliminate tailpipe emissions from new light duty vehicles by 2035“…it’s on their website…so while one might argue what is light duty, they did actually give an end date.

    2. The cost of EV’s like this is t going to go down that much. This thing has 40K wrapped up in motors alone. Even if the currently 25K battery was free an ICE would still be more profitable and cheaper. We know that if anything copper will get more expensive as energy prices go up, and 100+ year of eletric motors means right now, economies of scale are there and these are still expensive. For 40K. I could put an LT4 on every wheel of this behemoth, and it would still probably weight less.

      1. This will all change much as the development cost are covered. Once it is paid off then this stuff is like printing money.

        Batteries were $1300 per KwH back in 2015 and today they are below $95 KwH. By 2030 they are expected to reach $36 KwH.

        Development cost on a ICE engine is just going up more and more as they have had to redesign them every few years to keep up with tougher and tougher number.

        Look this is an emotional topic to many but that changes nothing of the realities. Lots of lies and myth-conceptions are doled out regularly.

        Is this going to be different yes. It is the end of the world no. Will there be some adjustments needed to be made yes. Is it going to save the planet no. Will most in the future see electric cars as odd. no.

        It was hard for many to give up horses but we survived.

        There is a lot of things going on right now I am not thrilled with including EV products but I realized I just need to find where I fit into this as it is coming no matter if I like it or not.

        Again my fear is for my classic cars. What are they going to do about it. Read up on the RPM act now and see what the EPA tried to do to amateur racing. We have activist in the EPA non elected now trying to reinterpret the law as passed by the government. Talk about violation of our rights.

        1. You completely missed my point. This thing has 40K worth of eletric motors. Those have been around for over 100 years. There’s no development going into those from auto companies. That’s left to Baldor and Toshiba….. who have been doing this for decades and decades. There is also nothing they can do to bring the price of that down. That’s before the battery issue even starts. ICE engines would have to be 4x the price before we start debating on battery vs gas. For that price we could afford to build really spectacular engines with ceramic cumbustion chambers that would be in the 70-80% efficiency range, and now it starts becoming more efficient to use gas vs BEV’s

          1. No I understand these are not the same motors doing more things than the electric motor than they did 100 years ago.

            Also I understand the major cost is batteries. And that is coming down and is still getting more development. Not just in the auto industry but computer phone home etc.

            You also have no grasp of the development costs of todays engine along the support items that have to go with them today just to make a claim to meet regulations.

            They are including glass, paint, and the auto stop credits and other Rube Goldberg items to even come close to the numbers they need.

            Just look at the number of EPA off cycle credits that they are getting to meet things now.

            You do know what an off cycle credit is with out Googling? Thought so!

      Converting an ICE vehicle to run on ethanol or Biodiesel isn’t difficult and bypasses any silly government attempt at banning them.

  11. Can someone just explain why they’re all white. Is it that hard to paint some different colors like any other vehicle?

    1. Often in marketing they paint the first models one color so they are noticed more easily and if you see one you may think you are seeing more than one but it may be the same one.

      Even back in the 80’s the First Fiero’s were all red and some white. It was marketing then too.

      The cars introduced will all look the one in the commercial and on the web.

      Other colors will soon come with other options and cheaper smaller models.

      2. Huh? I literally just said that MPGe isn’t a good way to measure efficiency of EV’s and that in any case this one is extremely inefficient. Why are you yelling about emotional intelligence? I didn’t say it was stupid or that I hate it, I think is an awesome truck and I’d love to see one in person, no hate at all lol. I like the truck, it’s just inefficient, I didn’t expect otherwise, just stating a fact.

    Everyone loved the HummerH2 when it cam out in 2003 but by 2005 they realized it got worse mileage then the Gas guzzling Tahoe, Suburban, Denali, Full size vans, etc., however the hummer was only 1 MPG less then those trucks. Go Figure, I think they just hated Schwarzenegger!!!

  14. I’m interested in the 247 kwh battery….. This is much more than double the Caddy Lyriq’s ‘half-size’ 100 kwh battery….

    Seeing as the Caddy will charge at home at 80 amperes (presumably future cost-reduced models will have GM’s now ‘standardized’ 48 ampere charger for their more economy products), and even at 80 amperes the vehicle will take 14 hours to fully recharge – one wonders whether the HUMMER will optionally add TWO charger ports to cut this time to 7 hours..

    Dedicating 200 amperes (required for a 160 ampere continuous (over 3 hour) load) to the garage to recharge ONE vehicle is frankly a bit of an eyebrow raiser but I’m sure customers such as the Governator can afford it.

    As far as Trophy Vehicles go, this is actually QUITE CHEAP to Refuel….

    I looked at Car and Driver’s review of the $75,000 RAM 1500 they advertise 10 times a day on TV, joking that they don’t see why the connecting rods don’t bend what with all the fuel rushing into the cylinders and that this vehicle Causes Global Warming in and of itself since on a good day the thing gets 10 mpg and MUCH WORSE if you try towing anything…

    Seeing as Gasoline is on its march to $4 per gallon, that means the Very Masculine RAM 1500 will set you back at least $250 to make a round trip between Buffalo and Albany, New York. Meanwhile, the Hummer can do it for $70. A steal by comparison.

    1. That is precisely why of the 3 evs I will likely always own, at least one of them will remain a plug-in hybrid in case there is no commercial juice.

      But if that happens for any length of time the fact that I can only drive one car will be the least of my concerns…. So your point is a bit of a Red Herring.
