The GMC Sierra Diesel 1500 is powered by the new GM 3.0L LM2 inline six-cylinder, turbo-diesel Duramax engine. The motor is rated at 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. It mates to the new GM 10-speed automatic transmission, driving either the two rear wheels (in 2WD models) or all four wheels (in 4WD models).

We have also confirmed that the GMC Sierra’s corporate cousin – the Chevy Silverado – will also receive the same price cut.

  1. GM would only drop the price of the diesel by this much if it’s not selling. Remember that the engine cost is about $4,000 on a Chevy, so basically this lowers the price to just $2,500 ovèr the base engine. At the fuel prices of today and slightly higher over the next year, you need to drive a huge number of miles to save the price difference.

    1. Supplier issues with the 5.3 & 6.2 engines preventing GM from building many configurations. Therefore making the diesel more attractive. If you drive the 5.3 and immediately drive the 3.0L, most people would choose the 3.0L. Its a great engine and feels more powerful than the 5.3. I’ve seen many people get over 30 mpg in highway driving in the diesel.

  3. Great engine, easily the best of the half ton diesels. Those saying it is a market adjustment, all the others priced their diesels as the too self engine, but the Ford definitely isn’t the too engine. The diesel is the best engine is GM’s lineup for everyday driving, so long as you don’t need to tow heavy or are not running it for only short trips. The biggest thing GM can really do now to make the diesel more appealing is increase the towing capacity.

  5. The 3L Duramax is awesome. My Sierra Denali gets 40 mpg when I set the cruise to 50 mph.
Oh yeah, and it will tow my 10,000 lb boat with ease.

Still cannot order the GMC Yukon Denali with the baby Duramax though…..bummer.

  6. I would have loved this truck in 2002. GM so bad needed this back then !
But as the truck owners have gone to the HD the passenger truck has become the 1500, and that is life.
GM also did this to themselves by making the 1500 such a light duty truck.
I think its a great truck, and engine, so don’t get me wrong and if a 1500 did the job for me I would own the 3.0T !
I hope GM sticks this one out, and does not discontinue this engine also.
Yet I fear the financial recovery will take time and the auto cash flow will be feeling the pain.
