The all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 looks sleek, with all kinds of sporty design elements, including door handles hidden inside the side air intakes for a cleaner profile. Meanwhile, the all-new key fob provides standard keyless entry and start capabilities. However, what should owners do if the battery in their 2020 Corvette dies? In that scenario, they can use the physical key located inside the key fob to access the vehicle’s cabin, cargo areas, and jump-start the vehicle. The following video from Corvette Academy looks at exactly that.
The 2020 Corvette key fob comes with a button on the side of the fob that allows the user to remove the physical key. This key can then be inserted into the backup key cylinder located next to the door handle, inside the side air intake. This will open the driver-side door, allowing access to the cabin.
Access to the rear cargo area is provided via a backup key cylinder located behind the license plate. The license plate will need to be removed in order to access that backup key cylinder. From there, owners can use the physical key to open the hatch.
Access to the front cargo area (hood) is possible via the manual release cable loop located inside the cabin, underneath the driver-side dash. Find it just above the brake pedal. Pull this loop twice to release the front hood.
From there, the 2020 Corvette will probably need a jump. The battery is located in the front trunk / hood, and access to the battery can be found underneath the plastic cladding inside the front trunk.
With the front trunk / hood up, remove the left and right side shields located at the sides of the cowl cover.
This will allow the battery cowl cover to be removed, revealing the battery terminals underneath, allowing the vehicle to be jump-started.
Once power has been restored, the automatic windows will need to be reset.
Finally, if a passenger is inside the 2020 Corvette when it loses power or the battery is disconnected, pulling the door release levers located on the floor – between the seat and the door – will allow passengers to exit the vehicle.

This sort of stuff old hat to us CTS Coupe owners. Luckily I have never had the battery go dead and had to use the secret decoder key and magic pull string or the escape handles down on the door sills.
Has the Corvette team considered adding a lithium battery option. It lasts longer, weighs less than a third (15-17 lbs), and with smart battery options can maintain enough of a reserve for an emergency start as well as battery reporting to a cell phone app. I replaced a 47lbs battery with a more powerful and longer lasting Anti-gravity lithium battery in my F430 spider. I would order the option if offered. Please consider it.
I agree that the new Corvette deserves a lithium battery instead of the classic and archaic lead acid battery. And instead of having to remove the shields in the front trunk, it should have two terminals available under a simple cover for jump starting only. My Fusion has the battery in the trunk but has its jump start terminals up front, and easy to access once the hood is opened.
Jump starting the Tesla Model S is even more complex!.
This is a critical video for all Chevrolet C8 Corvette owners need to watch because there’s always the possibility that it may happen during their ownership of the car and how to use the ‘actual’ physical key to the Corvette.
Wow, you can actually get locked INSIDE the car. There’s an old joke about this….
More to the point….you can lock someone in your car…perhaps someone with sticky fingers and delusions of grandeur. Best anti-theft ever!!
okay –so one week since I last started my C-8 – it has 2400 miles on it — battery is DEAD , the doors are locked and I can not get the emergency key to open the door – so with help from my dealer there is a reset method you must follow to open the door !!! a little tricky so call your dealer for instructions – once you do that it will require two people to open the frunk , one to pull the ridiculous cable from under the dash actually on the what was the firewall and the other to lift the lid , now it is open and you must dismantle pieces of STUFF to gain access to the battery –TERRIBLE problem — I am having a exterior charging lead installed ( something that really should have been on this car )
the key will unlock the rear hatch, but not the drivers door
