The 2020 Buick Encore GX made its big North American debut last year at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. Dropping in between the subcompact Buick Encore and the compact Buick Envision in Buick’s model lineup, the Encore GX is offered as a “subcompact-plus” premium crossover. Now, we’re taking a look a look at the GX as it relates to the smaller Buick Encore in the following GM Authority Dimensional Comparison, breaking it all down with regard to exterior dimensions, interior dimensions, and cargo dimensions.
Exterior Dimensions
As a “subcompact-plus” crossover that takes up a spot above the subcompact Encore, one would expect the Encore GX to be larger.
Unsurprisingly, it is, offering larger measurements in every dimension. This includes an extra 1.6 inches for the wheelbase, 2.7 inches for the overall length, 1.3 inches for the overall width, and 1.8 inches in overall height. To note, the overall width listed here does not include the width of the sideview mirrors.
What’s more, the Encore GX has a wider front and rear track, adding 0.4 inches and 1.3 inches, respectively, when compared to the standard Encore.
Dimension | Buick Encore GX | Buick Encore | +/- Buick Encore GX |
---|---|---|---|
Wheelbase (in.) | 102.2 | 100.6 | +1.6 |
Overall Length (in.) | 171.1 | 168.4 | +2.7 |
Overall Width (in.) | 71.4 | 70.1 | +1.3 |
Overall Height (in.) | 64.1 | 62.3 | +1.8 |
Front Track (in.) | 61.1 | 60.7 | +0.4 |
Rear Track (in.) | 61.9 | 60.6 | +1.3 |

Front Track (mm) | 1552 | 1542 | +10 |
Rear Track (mm) | 1572 | 1539 | +33 |
Interior Dimensions
With larger exterior dimensions, it would make sense for the 2020 Buick Encore GX to offer more space inside for passengers. This is, for the most part, true, with a few notable exceptions.
As the specs reveal, second-row head room and second-row hip room are both down on the Encore GX, losing 0.7 inches and 2.6 inches, respectively, when compared to the “standard” Encore.
That said, the rest of the numbers are up, with the biggest gains seen in first-row shoulder room (1.2 inches) and second-row shoulder room (1.1 inches).
Dimension | Buick Encore GX | Buick Encore | +/- Buick Encore GX |
---|---|---|---|
First Row Headroom (in.) | 39.7 | 39.6 | +0.1 |
First Row Legroom (in.) | 40.9 | 40.8 | +0.1 |

Second Row Hip Room (mm) | 1207 | 1273 | -66 |
Cargo Dimensions
Finally, we find the 2020 Encore GX offers more cargo room than the “standard” Encore, with an extra 1.8 cubic feet behind the first row, and a sizable 4.7 cubic feet added behind the second row.
Dimension | Buick Encore GX | Buick Encore | +/- Buick Encore GX |
---|---|---|---|
Cargo Volume Behind First Row (cu. ft.) | 50.2 | 48.4 | +1.8 |

Even the Chinese don’t want a cheap and crappy 3 cylinder turbo in their Buick’s. What makes you think America is going to buy it ? Give it 1.4T and 1.5T mild hybrids, then you will see good sales.
Thanks for the side-by-side comparo. This always helps.
I’ve been playing on Buick’s site and building different trims/features. For the most part, the GX has not really gone up in price compared to the current Encore. However (at least to start with for now), I’m sure the incentives on the Encore will make it the much better priced car. I’ll wait another year for them to work any bugs out and let the prices drop (via incentives) on the GX. Then maybe I’ll get a new one, but may have to bite the bullet and go AWD to get the 9 speed.
waiting to see the looks of the Enspire. Really like the GX style better than the old one.
ONLY GM & Buick “Management” could come up with a “BUSINESS PLAN” that completely eliminates their ENTIRE line of sedans including the top notch Regal line AND then make TWO versions of their best selling Crossover with miniscule imperceptable dimensional changes. More proof that the clueless a$$ kissers make it to the overpaid executive level decision makers. What a mess & tragedy for the once respected Buick name plate.
@Michael Moss:
It’s not that I disagree with you so much as I feel you are not seeing the real picture here. It’s easy to blame those at the top, and rightfully so at times. But as much as I would love to see Cadillac and Buick REALLY stay in the car market,it’s the buyers who really makes these decisions in the end. It’s all about what the customers are buying, and for the past 3+ years is’t not been the cars. To ask a business (such as GM is) to make bad decisions and keep pushing cars while the world is on fire for SUV’s and CUV’s would be suicidal. It would kind of be the “old GM” in a way.
So yes, I wish GM would dedicate one factory in the USA to build the CT6, LaCrosse, Impala, Regal and maybe the XTS. Build those 4/5 models and ship them all over the world, but make them here! Offer them for customers here. But they MUST build what people are buying, or they will be nothing more than the old GM.
DB, so when did Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, Nissan/Infinity, Hyundai/Genesis, BMW, Mercedes, et al DUMP their sedans???? I saw GM upper crust “Management” in action once. I designed a spectacular two story Golf Clubhouse for a golf course they financed on a former Fisher Body Plant Superfund site. They killed the project because it came in $500k over “budget”. Ended up spending more $$$ to redesign to a one story very average caddy shack. Meanwhile, they spent thousands flying in their “management” fr Detroit to NJ, thousands for a mega Architect firm to OVERSEE our design firm and fly them back & forth to Rochester NY and on and on. An utter disgraceful waste of time & $$ and instead of a Cadillac Club House they got the Chevy. Pathetic Mechanistic Management that any Biz School Grad would have thought disappeared 50 years ago. Apparently NOT at GM. Oh, and 10 years AFTER this fiasco, they needed a taxpayer funded bailout!! Shocking.
@Michael Moss:
What you just described can be said about any business and the larger they are the worse that gets. Again, it’s not that I disagree with you, as I also feel there should be more cars offered. Especially from Buick and Cadillac. But don’t forget about the cars that are still offering at this time: Spark, Sonic, Malibu, Regal, TourX, CT4 and CT5. Compare that to the other brands and you will see that it’s still competitive. And to suggest that GM should still be chasing the car market when the world is on fire for crossovers and suv’s is just not a good business plan. Don’t blame them for going after the profit and income, after all they are a business and not a charity.
To bring up the bailout after 12 years is just plain silly. It’s time to move on from that and if you are one of the minority who feel it would have been better letting those two employers go under, then there’s probably not much anyone could say that will give you clarity there.
I just bought the Select ST version and I.LOVE.IT!!!! Worth every penny. Gave up a Mercedes C300 AMG and couldn’t be happier! Yes, the Merc is a performance car, all the way, agreed, but the technology sucks. I won’t miss it at all.
Congrats Deborah! If I’m understanding you correctly, you got the Encore Sport touring?
I wish Buick would make the Buick GX larger to make a real difference in size. A great Buick with superior quality would be made in Canada rather than in Korea. Buick quality was always superior.*
