General Motors will reveal its next Maven initiative this summer, according to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday, that will begin a pilot peer-to-peer car rental program.
The service will be similar to Turo or GetAround and will allow owners of GM vehicles to rent out their cars while they’re not in use. Drivers will be able to place their personal vehicles for rent on the Maven platform and share revenue with GM. The additional service would further diversify Maven’s offerings, which also rents out GM-owned vehicles for predetermined rates, and includes insurance and maintenance.
Think of GM’s forthcoming service as Airbnb for cars.
Most importantly, if successful, it will unlock a new revenue stream for GM without having to pay to maintain a fleet of vehicles like it does with its traditional Maven services.
GM did not comment on the future service, but we should hear more details as we approach summer.
