Cadillac Racing’s Michael Cooper Wins Both Pirelli World Challenge Races At Sonoma

Driver Michael Cooper of Cadillac Racing more than made up for his disappointing performance at Circuit of the Americas in the Pirelli World Challenge earlier in the month, winning both races at last weekend’s season closer at Sonoma Raceway. The wins weren’t enough to put Cooper on top in the GT Driver’s Championship, but he managed to maintain his third-place position in the standings, and helped deliver a second-place result to Cadillac in the GT Manufacturer’s Championship.

Cooper started Sunday’s race in second, based on his fastest lap from Saturday, but quickly charged into first and maintained the lead for the rest of the race. He managed to hold off Driver’s Championship winner Patrick Long even after a restart, “doing qualifying laps to keep him back,” he says.

“I pushed 100% the whole race. A great way to close the season out for Cadillac,” says Cooper.

Fellow Cadillac ATS-V.R driver Johnny O’Connell was less fortunate, wrecking during practice on Friday, which meant that his team had to work late into the night to get his backup car prepared for Saturday. He finished at the back of the pack in seventeenth at Saturday’s race, and placed eighth the following day.

O’Connell won both rounds at Sonoma back in 2016.
