Accidents happen. But, sometimes, they’re a little more painful to endure or watch, especially when it involves a pre-production 2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.
Unfortunately, that’s what happened here. In the video above, around the 1:35 mark, the driver seems to have a slight misjudging of a corner at the Nürburgring. In turn, the brakes lock up and the 2018 Camaro Z/28 hurls forward into the barrier. It’s not horrific, but it’s definitely more than a little bump and bruise.
Before the crash, the 2018 Camaro Z/28 rips through the turns and straightaways and the famed ‘Ring with force, emitting a lovely V8 burble in the process. Following the crash, the driver and passenger exit the prototype, take a good hard look at what they’ve done, and proceed to cover the car up before trailering it away.
Luckily it wasn’t worse, but the minor spill was more than enough to take the Z/28 off the track for the day.
Comments
The description of the YT vid says it has a 3.6 twin turbo v6, but this thing sounds like a Naturally Aspirated V8 to me, unless that LT4 Supercharger whine is really quiet.
It does appear to have the same hood as the ZL1.
Fast forward to 1:34 if you’re just here to see accident like me..
Little too much rear break bias? little too hard on the breaks? Looks as if the driver was trying to stay off the grass which would have been a much smaller oops!
rear brakes locked
Looks like all of the brakes locked. Tires aren’t spinning at all at 1:37-1:38. Does Track mode disable ABS?
Driver, you’re Fired, lol
American made POS.
By the way, when is GM going to pay back the American taxpayers?
You’re joking, right?
Left-wing Larry troll alert! Anti-American bigot troll strikes again.
Got to love how he hates America but then so “worried” about the American taxpayer. Haha. How stupid and uneducated is this guy/ girl?
He makes me proud to live in the U.S., but he is too stupid to figure that out.
I don’t know why you would try to assess a political affiliation to Uncle Sam, a troll is a troll! They come in all stripes!
Looks like a possible rear brake failure; but it was a bit surprising to see there was 3 occupants in the car as the guy in the rear seat probably was watching the instrumentation from the sensors and should probably knows what lead to the accident; but these accidents are ‘common’ as this is what you do in testing a new car.. you try finding out what are the limits and you’re never going to find out if you play it safe because if they could have stayed home at GM’s Milford test track as going to Nurburgring is to test new suspension and brake setups.
You’d think some one had died. Cover the body with tarp and have the coroners truck come to pick up the body. Back to the drawing boards.
I would not call it brake failure. Odds are they could have been playing with brake bias and got too much dialed in for the rear. Often this tuning can be done on the fly today with the new brake systems balanced via by electric system vs the old mechanical valves.
I was not shocked by 3 people. Two are monitoring or the second front seat passenger may have been learning the track better. They have to make the best of their time there and more people can do more things.
I was impressed as hard as they hit the car did not look worse. That was a hard hit in the rail.
The cover up was not surprising as they are trained to keep cars under cover when not moving. Also I am not sure where they were but this track is almost 13 miles a lap. I would not want to drive a car I just hammered into the rail at speed for the rest of the lap. A tie rod lets go and the next crash may not be as good as this one.
If you don’t lose a car once in a while you are not trying hard enough. They lost a CTSV not long ago and a Corvette too. You have to find the limits.
Another smart, well-informed repky from Scott3. Thanks!
Too bad Sean isnt as smart as Scott3. ?
Sean does fine here. He is one of the better ones on the site.
It could have been a misjudge deal too.
I just based my opinion on the fact that they were doing tuning in several areas some on the fly and caught too much rear brake.
Heck the they could even have been playing with dampers if they are active.
Only the Stig in the back seat knows for sure and he is not talking.
