The Features And Equipment Of The 2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum: Feature Spotlight

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 has all kinds of firsts going for it:

  • It’s the first-ever XT-branded Cadillac
  • It’s the first-ever Cadillac XT5
  • It’s the first-ever Cadillac crossover to feature the brand’s new trim level hierarchy

At the top of that trim level hierarchy is the new Platinum model. We set out to identify exactly what features and equipment the new range-topping model included.

First and foremost: all XT5 models in the United States will be sold with the naturally-aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX engine. And the XT5 Platinum will be sold exclusively with the advanced twin-clutch all-wheel drive system. This means that there will be no such thing as a front-wheel-drive XT5 — at least not for the 2017 model year. We should note that the system is available on the Luxury and Premium Luxury models as an option, whereas it’s standard on the Platinum. From there, things break out into features that are either exclusive to the Platinum trim or features that are standard on the Platinum trim while being optional on lesser trim levels.

  1. Cadillac’s XT5 need to have engine options and the best approach to follow is that of the CT6 which means a LTG 265 hp 2.0L DOHC-4v 4-cyl Turbo for the base FWD XT5, then a standard LGX 310 hp 3.6L DOHC-4v V6 and the top tier engine being the LF3 420hp 3.6L DOHC-4v V6 twin-turbo because this gives a better power curve than the LGW twin-turbo 3.0L V6.

    1. Instead of more gas engines, we need an EREV version to save gas and drive electric.

      1. What’s wrong with all the above?
Currently hybrids are not driving sales but they will again one day.

      2. Actually, I think to be competitive they need to have a diesel power plant. I’m sure that they could make some “Cadillac” modifications to the 2.8L DMax. They can change exhaust notes, manifolds etc to make it quieter, more insulation, etc. That is what the XT5 needs. I agree with the 2.0L TT that is a must. But, instead of a EREV they could mate the 2.0L to an e-assit system and give it stop/start.

        1. jonnyd84..I agree with diesel option especially with the eventual return to Europe, it will be important.
JdN hinted in an interview that a Cadillac diesel was in their powertrain plans.

I do not think that an e-assist system goes far enough as a differentiator to be successful enough in this segment. It is simply not high tech enough.

    2. I mostly agree with your engine option suggestions.

I think the 2.0T is a good base engine. It would return similar performance figures as the 3.6NA while feeling punchier off the line due to the increased low end torque as well as slightly better fuel economy numbers. I am really surprised it was not offered here considering they are putting into the CT6 which right now the defacto flagship and also right around the same weight.

      The 3.6NA is a good mid-level motor.

The new 3.0TT is a better fit globally than the 3.6TT since Cadillac would have a tougher time selling the LF3 in China since it would face stiffer government registration tax because the displacement is over 3.0L

China is an important market Cadillac so it is unlikely they will anything to hurt their chances of being successful there. Much in the same way that the new planned 4.2TT V8 is not scheduled for China as the demand there would be very low.

  2. I think there should at least be a V-sport with at least the 3.0TT. Even the MKX has the 2.7TT ecoboost

  3. In the last couple of weeks I have been reading the commentary of journalists that have actually had time behind the wheel of the XT5 . Motor Week , Consumers Report and all the other writers or bloggers on You Tube that test new vehicles as their job .
I haven’t read one bad review yet ! From the outside dimensions to the weight reduction and the materials used on the inside . All Good . Even the CUE system seems to be much improved , not only how much faster it is but how it is integrated into the design of the dash . Unlike some cars where the infotainment system looks like a tablet that was just put on the dash .
The only thing a couple of the reviewers wished for was a choice of engines . And that will probably come later .
In the crowded field of this segment the XT5 has what it takes to compete . Even the price is something that you can’t argue about .
I can already picture one in my garage by next fall .

  4. Again, the XT5 is Beautiful, as for the Platinum Edition, 2.8L T-Diesel or 400 hp engine, 3rd row comfortable seat (Extended), and Bose Panaray System from the CT6 an I’m All In!!! 😉

  5. The XT5 is a beautiful vehicle that will be hard for Cadillac to keep them in stock. I just wish Cadillac went with the in-house 8 Speed transmission than the Aision (spelling) transmission from Toyota instead.

    1. I wonder if Cadillac’s in-house 8 speed would work in a FWD application and that is why they sourced it elsewhere.
Aisin is 30% owned by Toyota but they supply to a lot of other manufacturers including Nissan, Honda, Porshe, Jeep, FIAT, Mazda and Volvo.

  6. By not offering the adaptive cruse and automatic collision braking on the XT5 standard and luxury model make this a second class vehicle. These options are available on base models for most foreign cars. Here we go again a pretty car with substandard equipment. The base model Lexis, Mercedes, and BMW have these options.
