General Motors dealers delivered 254,076 vehicles in the United States in April 2014. On a year-over-year basis, total sales were up 7 percent, fleet sales were up 5 percent, and retail sales were up 8 percent. The General expects to grow its retail market share from March.
“Retail demand was steady in April, and truck sales and transaction prices were especially strong,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “As we expected, the economy continues to strengthen. In addition, our award-winning new products are performing well, we have more on the way and our dealers are winning accolades for outstanding service.”
The 2015 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV began arriving in showrooms in April, and GM has several upcoming launches that bring it into new vehicle segments, including:
Cadillac ATS coupe (arrives summer)
Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size pickup trucks (arrive fall)
2015 Chevrolet City Express LS – Chevy’s first entry into the small cargo van segment (arrives Q4)
April sales highlights (vs. April 2013):
Chevrolet sales were up 5 percent. Deliveries of the Impala were up 27 percent, Spark was up 24 percent, Volt was up 19 percent and Camaro was up 14 percent.
Cadillac total sales were up 5 percent and retail sales were the highest April since 2007.
Sales of the Cadillac CTS line were up 36 percent, with sales of the sedan up 68 percent on the strength of the all-new 2014 model, which is the Motor Trend Car of the Year. SRX deliveries were up 31 percent, for the vehicle’s best April ever.
Buick sales were up 12 percent for the brand’s best April since 2006. The results were driven by a 48 percent increase in Encore deliveries, as well as a 21 percent increase in Regal sales and a 10 percent increase in LaCrosse sales.
GMC sales were up 13 percent for the brand’s best April since 2007.
Sales of large SUVs (Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL) were up 22 percent.
Chevrolet Silverado sales were up 9 percent and GMC Sierra sales were up 21 percent. Retail deliveries were up 13 percent and 22 percent, respectively.
GM expects to gain between two and three points of retail market share in the large pickup segment compared to March 2014.
Per plan, GM increased its share of trucks sold with average transaction prices below $40,000 compared to the first quarter of 2014, and maintained its share of more premium-contented trucks.
GM’s incentive spending was down from March. As a percentage of average transaction price, spending was 10.2 percent, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates.
Average transaction prices continued to improve from record levels set in the first quarter of 2014. Year to date, they are up more than $2,000 per unit versus the same period in 2013, according to J.D. Power PIN.
Commercial fleet sales were up 11 percent for the sixth consecutive monthly increase.
Small business deliveries, which are included in retail sales, were up 14 percent.

About The Charts
26 selling days for April 2014 and 25 for April 2013
Totals include discontinued Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, and Chevrolet HHR
Well the Silverado outsold the Ram by 6000 units in April, and Sierra was up 22% selling 3000 more trucks in April than that of April 2013
Prices drive sales, and Ford and Ram are offering deep discounts. Would you buy a Silverado when you can get a similar Ram for $5-7000 less?
Gm made it clear they are looking for higher profit margins with their new trucks. The 2015 Canyon-Colorado are going to have conquest sales from potential Silverado-Sierra customers, so expect full size truck sales within GM to take a hit with the midsize trucks come out.
GM has put total number of sales secondary, and profits first. Profits=more money=more R&D=better products and more unique limited run models
Magirus: Actually, considering Fords much larger rebates, the gap is narrowing considerable. Ford was outselling GM by 9-10,000 a month just a couple months ago and a lot of us said it was due to rebates. But you said rebates had nothing to do with it.
Well, GM closed the rebate gap and guess what, Ford sold 63,387 trucks in April while GM sold 60,001 and still had 2-3000 less in rebates and program money.
So I guess you were absolutely 100% positively WRONG!!!!! Looks like pricing/rebates did have a lot to do with the GM truck sales, as myself and many have stated. It’s like giving your child their favorite meal every day and then taking it away. Manufacturer’s including GM have been giving truck customers $10,000+ off trucks for a couple years and now they expect it.
All three major truck brands are so close in technology and performance today that with a growing majority of the buyers it comes down to the money.
Magirus: In addition, Ram sold 36,674 trucks compared to GM 60,001 and Ford’s 63,387, so that gap really isn’t closing as fast as you imagine, even with their much larger discounts/rebates.
With how you are bragging about the Ram diesel sales all over this website, I’d though Ram would have outsold both GM and Ford by now……NOT.
Are you serious (you obviously haven’t felt the power of the 2.0t)? I am averaging 24 City and 32 Highway with my 2.0t! You could never get that with a 3.6! Not to mention that it has less torque. However, I do have a few suggestions for the 2015 model that are critical for Chevrolet including:
-Standard decklid spoiler on LT’s
-Standard wing spoiler on LTZ’s
-RainSense wipers included in LTZ Premium Package
-Optional body color grille
-Optional body colored roof rails (for looks only)
-Optional UltraView moonroof
-6 Speed manual
-6 speed manumatic (slap stick) with eco mode
-ECO 2.5i with eAssist, stop/start, active grille shutters, reduced weight, and lower ride height
-Different rims (17″ machined aluminum, 18″ polished, 19″ chromed, and 20″ black chromed)
-Addition of Intake Variable Valve Lift in the 2.0t for a 2-3mpg improvement.
-Get rid of or improve the stop/start system
-Take an inch or two of trunkspace for the backseat
-Add Fusion Orange, Rainforest Green, Deep Blue, Midnight Amethyst, Iridium, and Tungsten
Fuel Economy:
2.5i (205HP/195FT-LBS)-
Manual = 28 City and 39 Hwy
Automatic = 27 City and 38 Hwy
2.0t (260HP/295FT-LBS)-
Manual = 23 City and 34 Hwy
Automatic = 22 City and 33 Hwy
Be interesting to see the Malibu split out fleet and non-fleet. That would provide a better judge of incentive performance, I know that was a huge factor when I upgraded my 08 3.6 to a 14 2.0t. Reality is most will be opting for the 2.5 and that’s where the true competition lies. Fusion was down 1.1 YOY, Accord up 1.7 for the month while Camry was up 19.9. Just about ever car in this segment did the same or better April vs. YOY, but Malibu did not.
When, exactly, in 2015 are the replacements for the Equinox/Terrain supposed to come out? Those are the most important non-truck vehicles for Chevy and GMC and the competition is getting stronger all the time (e.g., the new Jeeps).
If the answer is “4th Quarter 2015”, I think GM will be challenged to grow more than low single digits in 2015.
I’d really appreciate a new Envoy on the Canyon platform with a 4.3L V6 or 5.3L V8 paired to an 8l90. That way, GMC could compete with Jeep, and if nice enough, steal buyers away from other brands like Range Rover, Infiniti, Lexus, etc.
Hoo boy, that’s not good. If the past is any indication, that means they will start trickling out in December 2015, and take until Feb/Mar 2016 to get up to speed.
I realize they have a lot of launches, but these are critical, and should be sped up if at all possible. Jeep is going to be eating their lunch for the next 12 months, unfortunately.
The Malibu will be replaced before it is refreshed. Much of what it needs will be in a new platform. It and the Regal are due for a platform replacement soon.
You must be joking. The Camry is hideous and still has the same fake looking interior. The Sonata might be some serious competition, but lots of people are complaining about how bland Hyundai made it look. The Malibu needs to be advertised some more as it is one of the best sedans out there! Some new rims, spoilers, colors, options (UltraView/RainSense), and transmissions would be good enough to keep it updated against its competitors.
I think the main thing for Malibu is to have more legroom. We all do know that they did the cutoff for the front seats and carved some inches but in the Chevy site it still saying that it has the same rear legrooms as of the ones from 2013. It might It would also need some technical/electronic updates borrowed from the impala i.e. next gen mylink, adaptive cruise control, 360 camera, you name it.
Comments
And VW is down 8% compared to March 2013, and down 10% year-over-year. Who knew the strategy GM used in the 90’s wouldn’t work for VW now???
I guess all the recalls didnt affect sales all that much.
Once again, competitor pickups’ sales are up by a higher percentage, with older designs.
Well the Silverado outsold the Ram by 6000 units in April, and Sierra was up 22% selling 3000 more trucks in April than that of April 2013

I see the Malibu refresh isn’t helping sales. The more I see the 2014, the more I prefer the 2013 front end …and it still needs a V6!
