Camaro Chief Engineer Talks Z/28: Video

Motor Trend’s Wide Open Throttle series had the chance to sit down with Chevrolet Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser, and he treated the hosts with a slew of behind-the-scenes information on the upcoming 2014 Camaro Z/28. From the last-minute changing of the the original Z/28 idea to what we now know as the ZL1, what led to the LS7 being the engine of choice, and the possibility of the Z/28 being a factory-built race car. There’s plenty more where all that came from, but you’ll have to watch the twelve-plus minute video below…

  1. What a nice compliment to the interview with Tad Juechter. So is this supposed to be track car or race car? This car should do great in NASCAR style racing but for real road track racing, there are choices out there that handle better out of the box. However, if the objective was to make a high performance bus, yes, the team succeeded, seems like it should be on par with Mustang Boss.

  2. great interview, this is a track car, should beat any mustang on the track, it scorches the ZL1 on the track, but still scared about the price, probably will be more that a C7. $$$$$$

  3. Al is a great guy and a true car nut. He is the real thing. Al is known to too few people and it is good he got some time here to speak. He is not just the Camaro engineer but GM RWD engineer.

This car will be good in some of the classes where they race cars that are pretty much stock. They do not get much screen time on TV but they are out there. It should be great in SCCA.

She was wrong on the 3rd Gen Camaro as it did dominate the SCCA Escort show room stock series after the Corvette was banned. It was the car Porsche has a hard time beating. The 1LE the first one won many races.

I just hate the price on this as it will make many mad. You will understand when you see it.

Class rules and Classes always change. If there are cars like this and the Boss they will make places to race them. The the merging of the two major road race series in this country they will be looking for cars like this to race, Don’t thing GM had this in mind and also may have already had talks with them.
