OnStar Releases Official Details On New Family Link Service

As we reported earlier last week, OnStar officially announced its new Family Link service today, which will offer subscribers the ability to locate their vehicle on an online map (Vehicle Locate) as well as set up scheduled email or text message notifications that provide the vehicle’s location at a certain time during the day (Vehicle Location Alert).

Say you let your son or daughter take your Family Link-equipped Chevrolet Cruze out to the movies for the evening. As a precaution (or if you’re simply that paranoid) you can check to see where the vehicle is — in this case, the local cinema — or if it’s actually parked outside of a suspected meth lab. Hey, sometimes you never know.

There’s also a more realistic situation of driving in foul weather. Imagine your spouse or child braving the highway during a snowstorm. Family Link lets you monitor their progress and can help provide peace of mind — or the heads up to call a tow truck.

Family Link will be run as an invitation-only pilot program for approximately 10,000 active OnStar subscribers through the end of 2011 to gauge consumer interest. For more, open the presser below.
