Report: Chevy Camaro Z28 May Not Be Called The Z28 At All

What’s this? After nearly two years’ worth of speculation throughout the automotive media about the 556 horsepower LSA-powered Chevy Camaro being titled the Z28, things go 180 on everybody just before the Chicago Auto Show — with the latest report suggesting that the range-topping Camaro will be called something else. Car and Driver suggests that the Ford Shelby Mustang GT-500 fighter will be titled the ZL1, or perhaps even the IROC-Z, while other Camaro fans feel that the car will be called the HP Edition.

Any thoughts? Feelings?

  2. I suppose they are looking at it from the perspective that when the IROC-Z was offered it was a higher spec than the regular Z28. Of course, historically, the Z28 moniker has been around for much longer.

  3. Z28 is Iconic – why not utilize the name. ZL1 is weak and HP is terrible.

    1. Well what’s missing from the ZL1 that you were expecting in the Z28?

  5. This breaks my heart truly. I understood the model needed a break when gas prices jumped. I own 2 vehicles sub 10 mpg. However, I do also own an accord witb about 40 highway. I did mention that those big 10 mpg is highway lol. 1. Jeep Grand Char. 5.9L turbo, intake, tranbreak, in-cooler, ignition, phase 1 & 2 comp. Etc. Most terrified I have ever been, no question. The other is my baby from my Sr. year in highschool! It was 1996 but the car was a demo. Has the only ss I have ever seen with that blue green flip paint. I poured a LOT of money in that baby, and she will beat jeep by 1/2 length. Maybe, just maybe, they will at least go IROC-Z if not Z28. My first car, black IROC-Z. I wish I still wish I had that car still! My father just got 2011ss/se stock, stay within 1/2 length. Any way sory to rant, but I want a NEW Z-28 sooooooooo badly
