Chevrolet decided to look back on its heritage, but bring one of its iconic nameplates to the modern world with the Chevelle Slammer concept. The Chevrolet Chevelle Slammer combines classic hot rod styling and modern performance for one badass looking car.
But, there’s more than meets the eye. There’s an all-new crate engine under the hood: the LT376/535 crate engine.
“The direct-injected LT376/535 is the newest and one of the most technologically advanced crate engines ever from Chevrolet Performance,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “It is based on the LT1 engine found in the Corvette Stingray and Camaro SS, but with a unique camshaft-and-heads package to help it produce 535 horsepower — 75 horsepower more than the LT1 in the Stingray.”
The new LT376/535 is paired to the SuperMatic 4L75-E transmission, which supports the Connect & Cruise package, which includes controllers and harnesses.
But the engine isn’t the only thing going on here, despite propelling the Chevelle Slammer to proper badassery. The 1969 Chevelle has had its chassis modified to accommodate large 18-inch front and 20-inch rear polished wheels. Almost every inch of the vintage body was subtly revised to give it a smooth, custom appearance, but careful measures were taken to ensure its iconic lines were not disrupted.
Like the Camaro Slammer concept, the Chevelle Slammer also rides on air suspension and features an Adrenaline Red interior, with seats from a 2016 Camaro and custom gauges.
While the Chevelle Slammer stuns, the new crate engine will become available in the 2017 Chevrolet Performance Parts catalogue for builders to get their hands on. Even if it’s not in a slammed Chevelle.
