The 2015 SEMA show is already poised to be a very good showing for Chevrolet. At the eve of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro launch, many aftermarket companies should be readying their latest for the next-generation of Chevy pony car.
But, Chevrolet itself has something special in store for fans, as the brand has announced its new ZZ6 small-block V8 engine to debut at SEMA 2015.
Chevrolet says it has taken the iconic 350 small-block designed and rethought it with a modern twist, incorporating updated Fast Burner heads, a high-RPM valvetrain and beehive-style springs valve springs inspired by the LS family of engines.
The end result is 405 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful factory-produced 350 engine ever built, and one of the most powerful 350 Small Block-based crate engines in the nearly 27-year history of the “ZZ” lineup.
“The new ZZ6 is the ultimate ZZ 350-based crate engine from Chevrolet Performance,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “After more than six decades, our powertrain engineers continue to refine and update the classic Small Block architecture, adapting new technologies to advance the legacy of the industry’s most adaptable V-8 engine and giving customers new choices from the company that pioneered the concept of high-performance crate engines.”
The ZZ6 also uses an aggressive hydraulic roller camshaft with .474/.510-inch lift and 208/221-degrees duration. It supports the high-RPM airflow capability, but maintains low-speed drivability.
Chevrolet says it will offer a base and turn-key kit for the crate engine. The base kit will include a single-plane aluminum intake, distributor, water pump, damper and flex plate, but requires the carburetor and other accessories.
Those looking for the whole shebang should step into the turn-key kit, as it will include the carburetor, an air cleaner that matches the unique valve covers, the starter, distributor, alternator and additional accessories such as the air conditioning compressor and front-end accessory drive system.
Availability for the engine will be announced at Chevrolet’s SEMA press conference on November 3.
