All-New Cadillac CTS Coupe Still On The Fence

The all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan rotating on display at the New York Auto Show is sure to be leaving people with the impression as one of the best vehicles in show. Inside and out, the new CTS looks amazing, with a spec sheet to match. But when it comes to multiple body style variants, the outlook is cloudy.

A CTS coupe would make sense, considering the popularity of the outgoing CTS Coupe (the best-selling luxury coupe in the industry), and that rival luxury makes such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW offer D/E segment coupes today, though they are on the pricier side.

“We will see where we go,” is what Jim Vurpillat, Cadillac global marketing director, told Edmunds during an interview last week. At the very least, a coupe variant of the all-new 2014 CTS would probably look amazing.

  1. on the fence ?!?!!? it should be in the works ! the cts coupe made up about 25 percent of CTS sales which is a large number for a coupe………and now that the CTS is riding on a lighter platform and has grown in size…you can add more character to it and lower the roof…make it look more aggresive, shot the front fascia will do that alone !…i think a new CTS coupe is what cadillac really needs…a model to show what American design is really about..

  2. If they make a coupe then they can redo the rear end with a more aggressive approach this time. I ended up liking the sedan’s rear fascia but I’d love to see something mean like the old CTS at the back.

  3. Well they could do what BMW does, which is to make a 5-Series coupe and mark it up both in price and nomenclature (the 6-Series), or they could do what Mercedes-Benz does, which is to give the coupe the same nomenclature as its mid-sized sedan (E-Class), when in reality the coupe has more to do with the smaller C-Class.

I think that if Cadillac really wants to become a global brand, it needs wagon, coupe and sedan versions of the ATS and CTS. And the coupe should not be a big-butted, controversial styling wedge like the outgoing CTS coupe (although I happen to like it), but rather demure and understated. Cadillac also needs that flagship sedan, and a venerable mid-sized SUV/crossover to replace or supplement the lackluster SRX…

    1. The XTS I guess is the flagship sedan now, because GM called off the new LTS. Cadillac should just redesign the SRX.

    2. I like big butts and I cannot lie.
      You other brothers can’t deny.
      You know the rest folks.

  4. It is not on the fence as much as they like to make it sound.

Keep in mind that the SS was not coming and the Colorado was not going to come to this country either.

GM likes to keep some people guessing and try to generate excitement before they revile their plans.

Now I would not expect a wagon till they go back to Europe. .

  5. Kyree has the right idea. I have a feeling it won’t be called the “CTS Coupe” and will take on a new name instead, something that is coupe specific, and the ATS Coupe will following with similar naming structure.

    1. Cadillac seems to have forgotten their own nomenclature

      CTS = Catera Touring Sedan
      CTC = Catera Touring Coupe

This is why I think the XTS should have been “XLS”, considering it’s a livery car, not a touring car.

      1. Well than what does the “a” in ATS stand for?

  6. I’m sure that the ATS and CTS will both have coupe versions. They’re trying to compete directly with BMW, and BMW has coupe versions of quite a few of their models. I know for a fact that ATS and CTS coupes will looks brilliant, and have the nads to back it up too. I’d expect coupe versions of both in about a year or two.

  7. This is a no-brainer. My guess (hope) is they’re being coy, but if the CTS is to compete with th E-class, a CTS coupe better be the START of the variants. You can’t just have two sedan (reg and V) and that’s it. Otherwise, Cadillac will continue to be relegated to the second tier in terms of world-wide sales behind the three Germans, not mention Lexus.

Look at the E-class page: http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/vehicles/family/class-E
    – Sedans (5); Coupes (2); Cabriolets (2); Wagons (2) = 11 total.

And GM is hemming and hawwing over THREE? Give me a break.

  8. I’d like to start off by saying there should definitely be an ATS coupe.

For the CTS however, wagon > coupe

If Cadillac wants to bump up their prestige, they need to bring in competitive cars that start above $50,000. This starts with the flagship, and can continue with a GT coupe to compete with the 6 series, CL class, and A7. This car is essential in my opinion, so nothing like a CTS coupe should stand in its way.

    Perhaps a thrilling Eldorado revival?

Since Mercedes makes both the CL class and the E class coupe, I don’t see it as a problem. Cadillac should just use their best judgement. The CTS coupe would be half the price of the GT coupe, so the only issue is leaving room for the more expensive car to offer twice as much as the other.

For the wagon, which remains unmentioned, all three German competitors have one. I think it would be a good addition.

  9. I love my CTS Coupe and it would be a shame if the next gen doesn’t offer one. It’s need a more agressive rear end though with the rising belt line towards the rear

  10. If they really want to compete they had better bring back the coupe and the wagon.

    1. I think it’s time we start talking about the wagon.

  11. ETC; Eldorado Touring Coupe… Different fascia and back, large doors big back seat… Modern touring coupe/ art and science but unique but different styling then CTS…

  12. CTS should include sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon

  13. Definitely, there needs to be a coupe & wagon! Caddy can beat the euro’s at there own game with a full line up of body & engine potions!!

  15. It is unbelievable they are still considering updating The Coupe!!!! I think it should have already been built and announced along side the sedan. Lets face it people wanting a 4-door will but the Sedan and people wanting the 2-door Coupe will buy the coupe…so there shroud not be any conflict getting these out the door at the same time! I’ve had my 2011 Coupe day it was introduced and been loving it more than my MB 500 AMG, BMW 540! This is an awesome car and its not even the V-series!!! I want a new Coupe this fall and dam it they better have a new version when I’m ready to buy!

  16. The sedan needs wide, global appeal – hence the styling maybe held back a touch. The coupe needs more “wow” factor – and it will probably get it as the sibling to the next gen Camaro.

  17. Understand that it needs to be profitable… But i must admit, Caddy is lagging on the two door, hatch and even convertible model…
