For longer than we’ve been alive, the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro have been duking it out for the title of the pony-car segment. Fortunately, this comparison isn’t just about the stripped-out base models with autotragic transmissions, but rather, a couple of proper V8s, featuring row-your-own gearboxes.
In this video, Motor Trend host Jonny Lieberman introduces the two cars — the heftier, yet slightly more powerful Camaro, and the lighter, and possibly more nimble Mustang. As it turns out, however, the Ford Mustang GT Track Pack is no match for the Camaro 1LE, as professional driver Randy Pobst reveals through an on-track comparison.

well they won the comparison of the crown victoria and caprice so….
besides MotorTrend said Ford was scared to provide the Boss to Motortrend so then they provided the GT track pack
I own an 08 Mustang, but I think the Camaro is a lot more car. The Mustang was great until they started with the “JC Whitney” styling exercises in 2010. The ‘Merro has independent rear suspension like it should, the Stang still has that old Twin-I-Beam axle.
Randy is a ford racer whit the mustang. Right.?
Nah, pretty sure he is still racing touring cars for Volvo is SCCA
Whit a short shifter ford try to get the maximum horsepower to help the car on quarter Mille
Just imagine if the Camaro went on a diet. Imagine the possibilities!!!
Still, they’re both fun vehicles, just for different reasons.
I’m curious why Motor Trend made such a big deal about not getting the Boss. The 1LE already beat the Boss in another comparo.
I also like how Randy and the MT host mentioned how the extra weight of the Camaro actually helps with planting the car. Yes, less weight is optimum, but there ARE advantages to extra weight as well in a car as capable as these.
It still irritates me that everyone dumps on the Camaro for being hefty when the GTR, G35, BMW M5, CTS-V, GT500, or just about every other super performing 170+mph road rocket short of super cars is in the same weight category.
I guess just like the Corvette, it’s what happens when you have a car that so easily performs well above it’s price and performance class…
