Cadillac Considering Small Convertible Based On ATS

Remember the news about the supposed cancellation of the Cadillac ATS convertible project? Well, as it turns out, followers of the Wreath and Crest may still get their drop top. According to Inside Line, the product development team at Cadillac are considering a compact, two-seat convertible based on the ATS’ Alpha platform.

Cadillac hasn’t had anything with a retractable roof since it discontinued the Corvette-based XLR back in 2009, and a car such as the one described above sounds like it could be a lovely new addition to a segment inhabited by the BMW Z4, Audi TT, Porsche Boxter, and Mercedes-Benz SLK-class.

So far, this is all that’s been reported, so we will keep our eyes and ears on high alert for more news. It’s one more car that can help Cadillac build the respect it’s been earning since the launch of the current generation CTS and CTS-V.

    1. Well, the IS250 is a convertible IS… but what’s being discussed here is a two-seater, which is more along the lines of a roadster.

Both segments are rather different: the convertible based on an existing compact vehicle (IS, 3er, A4/A5) usually commands higher margins and serves a different buyer than the pure roadster (2 seater) segment, which has lower margins and lower volumes, but is still profitable. Truth be told, I’d rather see Cadillac offer both a drop-top compact (and a compact coupe) as well as a roadster, which itself can be derived from the Alpha.
