CES 2011: Chevrolet Volt To Offer Powermat Charging In 2012

It’s bleepin’ charging! Sorry, couldn’t resist. Considering the Chevrolet Volt is chock-full of technology, what-with it not having to use gasoline and all, GM has also decided that such a vehicle should be able to move beyond the conventional cigarette lighter phone charger and all of its wiring — to a much more convenient method. Say hello to Powermat, as it’s destined to be charging phones in a Volt near you by 2012.

To get Powermat into the Volt, GM had to fork over $5 million for a 1-year deal of exclusivity. Hopefully GM will sell enough Volt’s for the venture to pay for itself. In case you are unfamiliar, Powermat uses inductive charging to power up just about any phone, MP3 player or portable gaming device via a panel emitting an electromagnetic field.

  1. this is some cool technology. GM truly is on the cutting edge to help make vehicles like the volt an awesome way to go for personal transport.. ..

It would be very cool if you didn’t even have to remember to plug it in…Just drive over the matt and be done with the entire process..

    Space age!

    Thanks for the heads up.
